View Full Version : Help! My Chopsticks are attempting to murder my boyfriend!

I've just started sticking my hair up in a double-nautilus bun. (Or a cinnabun. Or another bun. Or ANOTHER bun, etc.) I'm using a chopstick these days, because it holds my hair wonderfully and I've hair-elasticed it to within an inch of its frizzy life, and since I've started, my hair's been a happy little camper, PLUS nothing gets sat on, leaned against, trapped on an armrest at the movie theatre, or anything! It's HEAVEN.

The problem is, I'm a BIIIIIG hugger, and dbf, daddy, mom, friends, random passersby, are constantly getting giant hugs (from a piffy person, so it isn't big for them to deal with), and my chopsticks want to play, too.

Last night, I stabbed dad in the teeth, dbf gets daily chest wounds, and mayhem is always being wreaked in general. I'm looking for a hairfork that's closely rounded at the top that will barely sneak out of the bun's top and go right back in, but I'm desperate for other suggestions until I find out whether those kind of hairforks exist. Does anyone know a bun I can use or way to wear hairsticks (or just one) that doesn't endanger my loved ones?

I can't leave it down, because it leaps within the first two hours from nicely brushed and mom-loved into something approaching a sideshow at a circus (Come one! Come all! For a small fee, you too can see the World's Largest Tangled, Matted Hair, in which Rats have been Living for at least Two Milennia~!)

Also, I go into hug withdrawal if I go without for even most of a day, so I can't quit that, either.

Please share stories about hairstick carnage! I'd like a laugh so I can stop feeling as horrible about my hair toys' indecorous behaviour.

Take a metal knitting needle with double points. Bend in half. Use as hair fork. :)

Or, have you tried smaller sticks? I stab everyone and the car when mine are too long!

Something like this maybe?: http://www.etsy.com/listing/87657446/hair-fork-hair-fork-hair-fork-artemis-5

Or this?: http://www.etsy.com/listing/84359731/hair-fork-hand-carved-simple-round-style?ref=sr_gallery_6&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=round+hair+fork&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade

Or maybe...this?: http://www.etsy.com/listing/50658289/walnut-hair-fork-round-top?ref=sr_gallery_2&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=round+hair+fork&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade

Or even this one?: http://www.etsy.com/listing/54983576/hair-fork-3-inch-plain-brass-round?ref=sr_gallery_14&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=round+hair+fork&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade

To be honest, I'm not too sure how that last one would work, but there you go. XD Good luck, I hope this helped!

I stopped wearing regular chop sticks when I was getting in my little car and bumped the top of the chop stick on the door frame. The other end jabbed down into my shoulder and left quite a scrape. I shortened mine, sanded the ends, and that helped a lot.

Squigglys! (http://www.etsy.com/shop/LarksHairSticks)

This (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=67283) is the LHC thread discussing them.

Yeah, I was going to suggest squigglys, too. Sounds exactly like what you need. :) A twistick (http://www.etsy.com/shop/woodnyou?section_id=5897646) may be another idea!

Shorter hair sticks, or putting them in more diagonally than horizontally might help.

In the meantime! I've developed a strategy that makes the hugs better and keeps my DBF from getting stabbed. I just turn my face towards him and burrow it into his neck, keeping the back of my head and my hairsticks/forks away from his head. :P I consciously turn my head towards people like this when I hug them to avoid stabbing them lol.

60th street have a number of forks with rounded tops. They're closed until after the holidays, but well worth a look if you can wait until January. :) Here's a link to their site (http://60thstreet.net/). :D

I have a very wonderful 60th Street fork. I also often reach for my Ketylos. I have some shorties but I am thinking of getting a medium or two.

Sounds to me like they might be a bit too long...

In addition to all the great suggestions so far, you might consider spin pins. They stay within your bun and can't poke anybody.

I bought a pack of kids chopsticks from my local Chinese store. They're just as long as my nautilus bun is wide so I get all the bun security with non of the injured relatives LOL Also, they're really cute and spotty (the chopsticks, not my relatives.)

Some hair utensils are too long and can cause problems in the hugging scenario: such as just about taking someone's eye out.

I also recommend a hair fork over a stick. A fork has 2 teeth or prongs and offers a boatload more of support of the hair than one stick to hold up the weight. My fave hairstick is a hair fork.

Sometimes when going in for a hug, I declare caution about the hair stick that could take out an eye. Sometimes sticks also slide during the day, being too long on one side or the other, so I kind of check that it's in throughout the day.

Good luck on this problem. This is just one of those long-haired perils, and everyone finds a different way to resolve it.

I third the Squiggly suggestion. The newest model is only $18! http://www.etsy.com/listing/87920660/new-squiggly-lite-now-with-less-curves

I'd get a shorter stick.

Short sticks with blunt tips. I like a ~4.5" stick with an elastic added to make an elastic slide for folded braids and log-roll-type things.

The only stick-misbehavior I can report is that one of my 6" self-made sticks somehow ejected itself from a lazy wrap bun the last time my husband and I were out on our tandem bike. We stopped at the spot where it must have happened on the way back to look for it, but it was gone. Hope it found a good home!

lol my husband just stabbed himself on the bottom ends of my hairfork. They tend to point down, but we're the same height so when he hugs me and goes to nuzzle my neck *STABBITY*

Might need to try hugging over the other shoulder or something... or maybe getting some point protectors I can stick on the ends.

I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to say that your writing-style made me laugh. :)

You can easily shorten your current chopsticks (if they're wood) remove from the blunt end ;) I have done this many times with hairsticks that are just too long. It also helps them fit under a hat.

But I have also found friends and family soon learn to avoid the sticks lol :D

Love the point protectors, dogmatix, what a great idea! I wonder if they come in black....
