View Full Version : Updos with beak clips?

I have an older thread about this but didn't feel like reviving it...

I was wondering what type of updos I can do that can be held with beak clips instead of hair sticks, so far I've learnt to do a pencil bun and cinnabun.
I figured that all types of buns that can be achieved with sticks can't be made as the top part of the clip won't close over the whole bulk of hair, about 1/3 works for the clip to close. (otherwise the clip falls out from the updo)

Also, my clips are ornated so I would really want the top part to go over the updo...If that makes sense..

Any tips on other styles to do with beak clips?

I do a lazywrap bun ,a french twist,a twisted tails up,a half up in a bun.

I use beak clips to secure the top loop of a Figure-8 and also for Log rolls. Using the beak clips as a hair stick (partly buried) seems to make the 'do's look especially pretty.

unknown you can actually find tutorials of these styles on YouTube.

In addition to those already mentioned, I also use my beak clips for folded braids and the seashell bun (this is the current Hairstyle of the Month and you can find the tutorial under that thread)

I have one very particular clip that I can only use in this style (http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/long-clamp/).

Maybe this could work for you, too.

I'm sorry...I forgot to mention that I knew that one...
Thank you anyways

Sundial: I didn't manage to find any other hairstyles on youtube than the ones I had mentioned. I'll look up the seashell bun.

*still looking for styles...*

Thank you.
But damn I'm awful at questions.... How do I fasten a beak in an updo once I've learnt it w/o the clip falling out?

I mostly use my beak with the underneath prong subbing for a hairstick and the top resting on top of the bun, but I have also heard of and I think tried a while back a "partly buried" method like I think Eboshi's talking about. This requires an entirely smooth beak, with no teeth anywhere and no crusty decorations on top like rhinestones. You make your bun of whatever type (you might try a cinnamon bun), and then open the beak only a little bit. Now insert the beak, with the bottom prong catching scalp hair and the top prong jabbing through the bun (not over it). I wear my beak horizontally, and angled up a little seems like it would work too, but I would avoid positioning it vertically, I don't think you'd get a good grip on the scalp hair that way.

There are a few beak clip ideas here, including doing a folded braid with the beaks partly buried (the last style, starting about 1:30):

I don't think you would have to use two beaks for the folded braid, as she does.

One difficulty with youtube is that "beak clip" doesn't appear to be a very standardized term, and a lot of tutorials are just labelled with the name of a bun. Here's a demonstration of a twist held by a "banana clip" that looks very beak-ish to me:

And here's a nautilus bun demo where the second time it is secured with a beak (starting about 1:50):

(not sure about that one, could be a poking hazard)

And another couple of ideas with a partly buried beak:

Hope that helps! :cheese:

I agree on looking up the styles on utube,it's difficult to describe the how to's well in words, seeing it actually done is better.

I was thinking about getting a pretty beak clip to try with a nautilus bun but I never got around to it.
