That is interesting! Why don't they eliminate the unnecessary damaging components? Apparently applying coconut oil to hair pre dye prevents free radicals from damaging hair during the chemical colouring process. Am considering going back to chem dye for root touch ups only as indigo is resisting sticking to my roots currently so this is a good reminder for me!

I think all dye is evil for the hair.

I think all dye is evil for the hair.

It is certainly not the best thing for hair, but each to their own I guess.

I have ordered a new variety of indigo from the states (so incredibly difficult to get good quality indigo here) am going to try that with protein filler on my roots before I consider going back to chem dye. Even then, I would only do root touch ups, my hair is not at all porous which is my problem.

ETA: sorry to hijack your thread UP Lisa! Just a thought provoking article for me, thank you or sharing! :)

I was just coming here to post this one: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/8948339/Bad-hair-day-Blame-the-dye.html

Apparently it strips a layer off the hair that cannot be replaced.

I can believe it. The hair I have that has been dyed feels different then the stuff that has only known henna.

Katsrevenge, I can totally believe that article. When I had bleached highlights, my hair was a differents texture and it reacted differently to products. Now my virgin hair that is growing out feels much smoother and is more well-behaved.

Or you can use an oil like coconut oil prior to dyeing hair that has an affinity for hair protein and offsets damage by chelating metal salts, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10495&page=139.
