View Full Version : Spin Pin Question

Hello all! I used to put up my wet or damp hair with spin pins, and now the gold coating has either come off in some places or is slightly rusting. This is causing the pins to kind of drag through my hair rather than go in smoothly like they used to. Does anyone know if there's something I could use to re-finish them? Or do I need to just buy new ones and not make the same mistake again?

How about giving the spin pin a light sanding then coating them with clear nail polish?

I guess that depends on which is more valuable to you - the time it would take to fix them, or the $7 to replace them?
How long were you using them, just curious? I've been using mine for about a year in wet hair with no issues yet.

I have experienced a change in color, and some slight corrosion, but I have used them a lot, and I suspect that these aren't meant to last forever. Mine haven't gotten rough yet though. I just continue to use them. I don't use them in wet hair.

My only concern with that is that the nail polish would be sticky even after several days. It seems to never fully dry in my experience. I wouldn't want it to stick to my hair.

They're still usable, so not worth the $7 to replace them. I've had mine for about 6 months now.

Yeah, there's not really rust per say, but it appears that the gold coating has rubbed off in some places, exposing the dark brown metal underneath that is not as smooth as the gold coating was.

Spraypaint?
I used them to put up my wet hair when it was about APL, but it never dried that way, even overnight.

When mine got "dull" like this I used a small paint brush and a little polyurethane varnish. It dries overnight, and restores the shine and the "slip" to the pins.

The conair ones cost less and come with three in a box.

I'm not a spin pin user (hair's too fine for it) but from what i've heard from girls at work who use em, they go right up into hair & come in several colors to match hair. so why bother repainting em if they're hidden in your hair? i would think the paint jobs recommended wouldn't last v long, so am recommending buy new ones.

I just recently found some at a store in my town mall called Ardenes. They were 5 for $10 so I got a a pack of 4 for only $2! Bonus!!!

Was the water heavily chlorinated? That's what did in one pair of mine - a few (like 3) rounds in the pool. I didn't try refinishing mine. I just threw them out and got another pair.

Mine are all chipped like that - I've used them almost every day for just over 3 months. I think the main culprit is interlocking them (which I know you're not *supposed* to do but I do all the time). I don't care as I'm not getting any snagging problems. If you do, I guess just file the chipped areas smooth and, if that doesn't work, paint something on them.

When mine started chipping I just bought a new pair. If you wanted to save yours, I would sand them down and then polyurthene them. Unless you have the supplies already that would cost more than new pins though.

your hairs very similar to mine, almost exact and I have no problem using them either, the fact they screw in makes them very stable.

Thanks, everyone :) I think polyurethane sounds like a good option. I don't think the water was heavily chlorinated but that might do it. The fact that I interlock the pins could be the culprit as well. Good thinking.
