View Full Version : Adding visual interest without bangs?

So y'all already know that I've got a thread on whether or not to keep my bangs (which have to be "styled" for 30 seconds using heat and a round brush to look ok for oh, a few hours). My next question is, how do you add visual interest to the front of your hairline when your hair is in an updo? I've thought of a lacebraided "headband" sort of thing that sweeps back into the rest of the bun. Also simply rolling that hair back as you go along (dunno if that makes sense) and adding it in the same fashion. What else can I do to make the front not look slicked back in an updo? Not a huge fan of the little "poof" thing that some girls do. It seems to accentuate my round face and widow's peak.

Maybe just put your hair up loosely or have it parted and then put up. There is also something beautiful about a minimalistic high ponytail :)

I'd say experiment with side braids and different partings of your hair.

If I want to create visual interest, I do a loosely rolled twist all the way back, just like you suggested. :)

It works for me!

Also, if you don't want to take the effort to lace braid, you could just put in an accent braid or two. :)

When I didn't have bangs before, I used to part my hair more on one side and keep that side slightly lose. Of course, that would depend on the style of the updo. I always part my hair whenever I do an updo so it didn't matter for me. You can also do perimeter braids.

Scarves can certainly make a difference, and the choice of earrings can make quite an impact in relation to your updo as well! You could also take about three or four sections on each side, twist them a little, then pin them where you want. Actually you could arrange the top or sides in any way you feel accentuates your features and pin them. You could also put a few pin curls at the front hairline before you go to bed and bring those strands back a little loosely to be incorporated into your do. If you google updos images, you may get a lot of ideas fom the pics. Good luck and have fun!!

A side part, or perhaps a slightly fluffy twist slightly above the temples. I have a round face too and it's hard to put my hair back without it looking terrible.

I can get a little visual interest in front and on the side if I make a side part and then french-braid the bigger half if it so that the braid goes over the side into the bun.

You can still create the look of having long bangs without actually having to go cut them in. Simply part your hair very deeply to one side, and I mean an extreme side part.........align the part to the outside edge of one of your eyes. Then simply take the big side of that part and sweep that section of hair across your forehead. Secure that section of hair with a bobby pin or a pretty barrette near where your ear is, and voila! You have side-sweeping bangs!

Loose high buns (just enough to see a bit from the front), or make a part (my favorite).

I've done that rolling thing though :P It was okay. Soon your bangs will be face framing layers so enjoy that phase aswell. If you have wispies you can "fluff" them and blend with the rest of the loose crown hair.

You can pull some hairs (few thin tendrils) around the face when they get longer, perhaps keep them at APL or so if you really need that visual interest.

Cornrows (which are tiny dutch braids going inside your bun). It can be done with french and rope braids aswell (or just twisting).

I'm pretty sure you can find tutorials for "how to fake bangs" on YouTube (once your bangs are grown out).

You can take a section of hair from behind one ear, braid it, and make a headband out of it, pinning behind the other ear (or lace/dutch braid one).

I know you don't like the pouf (me neither) but perhaps just a headband over a voluminous crown you might like (I do). Like this (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sMwzPNIK0n4/TfSxe9yrwjI/AAAAAAAAA_c/qUzS3rCZDpY/s400/Spring-2011-Hairstyle-Messy-Bun-With-HeadBand.jpg)

I like the idea of an extreme part or try side swept bangs.

To not have bangs, I find that a side part is essential to have my hairline look good.

Here's some stuff I like to do with my hair in the front:
rolled curl on the side (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ld7gdnHXpJ1qde3poo1_500.jpg)
circlets, either braided or rolled, and more messy/bohemian than in this picture (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_p0Kt28QRU1I/THa_xVP6yQI/AAAAAAAAGfc/Ou2NUIt0R-w/s1600/Princess+Braids.jpg)

Try adding a bright headband or interesting clips to the front. You can always make really easy headbands by sewing velcro onto the ends of a ribbon and fastening it is the back.

Thanks for the tip on how to do that, I might give it a try as my forehead is much too small to have a real fringe :(

As you can see, her side swept bangs are very long, down to her mouth actually. Just imagine if she pulled her bangs slightly more to the side and pinned them to her ear, and you have the exact kind of style I'm talking about.

I try not to pull my hair back too tight, and then I do a deep side part, and let part of it fall onto my face a bit. Kind of like this: http://bios.weddingbee.com/pics/41990/3e7771e993cddd87_audrinapatridgegrammys.jpg

Excellent! Thanks muchly, I have a clearer idea of what to do :)
