I stumbled upon this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/titania1837/6481515321/in/photostream/) picture on Flickr and was struck by how beautiful she (and her hair) was!
Any ideas on how to achieve it?
I thought maybe an English braid brought up and pinned in a bun on the crown? What do you think?

It looks like a french braid pinned up and then bunned to me.

I think it's a French braid, pulled back up and subtally pinned onto the braid. And then pinned onto the top in a spiral ?
I've never seen that style before but it is gorgeous. :)

I like her pince-nez. :) The hairstyle looks like a cousin of the "upbraided" (http://www.prismnet.com/~cortese/hair/styling.html#upbraided) hairstyle, though without anything obviously holding the braid in place. I think I'd want something securing the braid to the back of my head, perhaps spin pins would do the job yet look discreet.
Personally I haven't been all that thrilled with comb clamps as shown in most of the pictures with the instructions I linked-- I dropped one and broke one of its comb-teeth, and I broke the top piece of another one during wear (probably leaning my head against something). But a flexi-8 or other slide could also be used, including my favorite "elastic slide" assembled from a (shortish) horizontal hairstick with a hair-friendly elastic looped around the ends of the stick, sandwiching the hair between the stick and elastic.

Yes, you're right, bettylibertine. It appears that the braid begins at her nape and is slightly loose. She probably pinned it at the crown, then coiled the remainder into a bun.
There's a picture of a variation of this style in my album, except I French Dutch braided downward from the crown, then looped the braid back up and thru the top, then formed a bun braid that sat on the crown.
Thanks for sharing this lovely photo! Her attire is very beautiful too.

That is a beautiful picture! To me it looks like it was loosely french braided starting at the back of the crown and then the braid was pinned up and coiled on top.

Madora, could you post a link to the pic in your album, or post the photo here? I can't find it, and I would really love to see it :-)

Wonderful, Madora! I always loved your braid in the avatar also.
I think the vintage photo shows simply an upside down braid, tucked in at the top. My grandmother had this when she was young at the turn of the beforelast century :) There was some rolling involved in the middle to get thickness. Sorry I cant do your specific words for this.

On that same subject, I found this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/titania1837/6427867439/in/photostream/) picture of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria. Anyone have an idea of how to achieve this?

No, but that style is my holy grail as far as hairstyling is concerned.
From what I could see in the movie "Forever My Love" (the famous European "Sisi" trilogy), the braids (there were at least 5) were started along the edge (a la perimeter braid) and then most probably joined somehow. Also, the sectioning of the braids contributed to the sort of "tier" affect it had at the back.
The Empress had ankle length hair and her hairdresser was very adept in handling her tresses. This particular style was pretty much Sisi's "signature coiffure" .. imitated by many but rarely successfully!
There's even a "Sisi wig" available for re enactors..although it does not accurately recreate the style in the photograph.
