View Full Version : How thick are your ends?

wavestogrow
July 10th, 2008, 03:22 PM
This is something I have been curious about for a while now. I am wanting to know what the average thickness of the ends of the hair are in comparison to the ponytail circumference.
For example if you have a 3 inch ponytail, and your ends are 2 inches in circumference you would have 66.66% of your ponytail thickness. I am wanting to know this because I am curious as to what actually constitutes thinning and excessive shedding from a normal taper. It would also be helpful if you state your hair length, the condition of your hair and/or any other things that might have impacted the thickness. Thanks!

Mine are the same. My hair is only shoulder length, though :D

I have fairytale ends that taper to nothing, so at first I thought 0%. Then I realized that 1% of my ponytail circumference would be slightly less than a millimeter and those 5-10 hairs at my very ends could probably have that circumference, though it's not measureable. So I voted for the 1-20% option. My hair is about hip length.

ETA: I forgot to mention that I had lots of random breakage throughout my entire length before I found LHC, and I'm still dealing with white dots/breakage at the ends, although it has improved a lot. I would have had thicker ends at this length if I had had undamaged hair.

I trimmed a couple of months ago, so that makes my ends a bit thicker. My ponytail is about 3.25 - 3.5" and right at the very tips, it measures about .5". If I go back a couple inches, my ends are considerably thicker at about 1.5". I think I'll vote for the 1-20% option.

My hair is hip length, the top part of the ponytail is just getting over 4 inches even because my bangs are growing out. And the end of the tassel I have from my braid right now is 3.7 inches. I can braid all the way to the end for the first time ever!

I busted my butt/cut a lot of hair up to grow out layers to get it like this, though.

Edit- shoot, I didn't divide properly and voted in the 61-80 category. Pretend I'm in the next one! Brainfart.

I'm not sure mine will be really authentic as I'm currently growing out most of my bangs. Therefore, the base of my ponytail has more hair than the ends due to the fact my bangs just pass my chin right now. My ponytail is 4.5, and the ends right now seem to be 2, but they are wet, so I can't really tell.

My ponytail is 3 3/16" and the ends are just 13/16". My maths gives me just under 25%. This is the main thing I'd like to change as I'm keeping it at this length now, so I'm hoping the ends will thicken up with better care over time.

Thickness of cheese, I have purposeful layers.

Interesting poll. My ponytail is 2.75", the end is .75". I voted 1-20%, but I HATE math, so not sure if that's right. My brain does not want to do math right now. It CAN do math, but doesn't feel like it right now.
My hair is totally messed up. I lost the entire back bottom half to radiation, then I lost half of the volume of the rest of my hair to chemotherapy treatment. The bottom bald half is growing in and can now be included in the ponytail measurement, but that layer is about 10" from the real ends of my hair. Lots of new baby hair growing in, too. So I have wonky layers all over the place---good thing it's curly; it hides it well.

Thanks for the replies so far! It's been very interesting to me. I am such a geek. There seems to be a relationship in general between the length of the hair and what category people chose. I think I'm going to plot the points on a graph. :) Of course the more replies the more accurate the results will be to determine where the bell curve lies. :)

With a couple of recent trims of about 3" my hair is a couple of inches shy of waist length. I voted 41-60%.

I'm 3.25" at the nape and 1.5" 4" from the ends of my hair. So that makes them 46% as thick as my nape.

ergh. i hate math and it's late so i won't do the percentage.

i'm 4.25" at the nape and 3.75" at the ends. or thereabouts.

Well I'm going through a massive shedding, and my ends were fairytaled to started with. I'd say they're now as thin as the air in thermosphere (near vacuum). :D I think I need to chop a few inches to have clearly visible ends again.

Oh I've always known I have short terminal length, so this isn't unexpected.

My hair's at classic length, 3.5" at the nape and 1" at the top of my braid tassel, 4" from the ends. So I'm in the 21-40% category, if my calculations are correct - maths is not one of my strengths.

I've been growing out layers, and I think they're all gone now. Or are they? :hmm:

My nape thickness is 4", it drops to 2" by about 5 or 6" from the ends, and the very ends are 0.75". My hair is hip length and I'm growing out old layers. Good idea for a poll!

ETA I answered 1-20% based on the results at the very ends.

July 11th, 2008, 11:09 AM
To me my ends are the bottom 10cm of my hair. The very ends are under 10% (0.8) and the thickest part ist just 20%

But even if you go up higher there is not drastic thickening any time soon.:o

My hair is close to 30" (Guessing, because I haven't mesured in ages!) and I can braid all the way to the ends.

My hair is around 3" at nape and still over 2" at my braid tassle, about an inch up from the tippy tip of the ends.

I don't seem to get to much taper yet, the difference is mostly because of layers.

noelgirl
July 11th, 2008, 06:00 PM
My pony circumference is currently 3.9" (slightly thicker than last measure! :cheese: ). My ends are about 1.5" circumference, so that makes it about 40%. I'm growing out bangs and keeping some layers, and I'm currently a couple of inches past BSL.

July 11th, 2008, 10:20 PM
Due to some massive shedding recently, my pony is down to 4 1/16 inches. It goes down to 1.25 inches, so that's about 31%. But I do have lots of purposeful layers.

Florida Mom
July 11th, 2008, 10:36 PM
My hair is just over 4 inches at the nape; and waist length. A few inches up from the tippy ends, it is about 2 1/2 inches (where the braid tassel would be starting) . So I voted 41- 60%. The tippy ends are about an inch. I am growing out a few layers about 4 inches from the hemline. And I also have a large sideswept bang - so once all that grows out, I assume it will be thicker.

Great idea about plotting the results on a graph, BTW!

The thickness of the ends are almost as thick as the ponytailcircumference.

Faepirate
July 12th, 2008, 06:00 AM
Mine are just under half, but this is because I'm still growing out layers. My ends are thinner because there is only "bottom layer" hair in that part. :) I'll have to measure again when the layering has gone. I have a feeling it will remain stubbornly thick all the way down, at least for now. Maybe when it's longer it'll start to taper (I hope so! I want fairytales!)

I don't know and I don't want to know... My ends feels so thin :(

Periwinkle
July 12th, 2008, 06:41 AM
Are you looking for statistics on taper and such?

My real ends are much, much thinner than my pony circumference (pony 6.5", ends maybe 1") but I have a huge layer about 1" from the end of my hair which takes out most of the volume. If I measure above that, then it's 4" or 5".

Keiera
July 12th, 2008, 07:09 AM
My pony tail circumference is sitting right at about 3.5 inches, but the ends (I have a blunt hemline) taper to .5 inches, so I voted 1-20%. My hair is tailbone length.

My hair is between APL and BSL and is 4.5 pony and 3 ' at the ends. I have lots of layers that dont fit into either measurement though

socks
July 14th, 2008, 01:10 AM
I have fairytale ends which thin out to practically nothing. My thin ends are more a product of no trimming rather than the length, though, as I haven't trimmed my hair in about seven years. I like my taper much better than hair that stays thick down the entire length, but in less than 2 years, I'll have to strat trimming my hair to keep it off the ground, which means no more fairytales. :-(

Katze
July 14th, 2008, 01:19 AM
Well, I am still growing out layers, so the bottom 2 inches or so of my hair is very thin.

Since coming to LHC my circumference has thickened a lot; from 1.5 inches to about 2.5 inches. My hair is currently 26 inches - not quite BSL. My severely tapered ends are not measurable - several mm, so I voted 1-20%.

tiny_teesha
July 14th, 2008, 01:41 AM
Haha, i'm so funny.....read on.
Since my ends bother me so much i drew an image of a head of hair and then i tapered it, and measured mathamatically different thicknesses of the taper. I then decided that 2/5 is the absolute thinnest i wanted my ends to be- judging by the drawings).
I then measured from APL, BSL, WL, the circumfrance of my hair.
And i got the 2/5th measurment comparing to me NAPE (the imaged were comparing to the top of the head...now that i realise, which means...i mucked up somewhere ops!) Anyways- doing that i discovered that my hair at APL was 2/5ths!!!!
So really the ends of my hair was something like .3/5 - even though that makes no sence and i just realised NOW that i ruined it....I think. Anyway. I voted 1-20% obviously! :)

I'm 3.25 at the top and .25 at the bottom, so 13%. I'm not happy with that because it has changed so much in the few years I've been in Korea. Here's hoping that going home to America next year will help out my poor hair!

My ends are a whooping 11.76% of the thickness my nape measures. It's goes from 4.25" down to .5". Although most of the taper is between waist (3" thick) and the ends. But the numbers might be a bit off because my hairs not as fluffy as it normally is.

Fun chart for those of you who are into charts:

I saw this thread earlier and it made me curious, so I had to come back and post my results now that I've had a chance to measure. At nape, my hair is 3.5" (9cm) and at the ends 2.5" (7.4 cm), which my calculator tells me is ~80%. My hair is waist length, and the taper is very gradual.

Thickness at nape = 7.5 cm = 3"
Ends are very thin and hard to measure circumference, I think its about 1cm, under half an inch.
I'm at approximately waist.
I have just recently started trimming after nearly 3 years without trimming though, so I hope it gets better.

My ponytail is 2.5" and ends 1" or 40%. Length is around 23", condition from the ears down is bad from dye, elastics and generally rough handling, had a massive shed about 6 months ago and not all my regrowth goes into the ponytail. I get trims every 2 months but do have light layering at the front which is long enough to go into the ponytail.

My hair is between waist and hip, 77 cm (30.3"). My nape circumference is 11 cm (4.3"), my lower ends are at 8 cm (3.1"). My ends measure 5.5 cm (2.2").

My math is not brilliant but I guess my taper is rather low. I had layers but they're nearly gone now, and I had some minor trims in the last months. So my hair begins to taper seriously only in the last quarter of my length were it gets notably thinner.

Oi, circumference is a lot harsher than diameter! I'm guesstimating I've got about 1 cm circumference close to the ends. Can't measure right now, though. They haven't been trimmed for a month or two, so I'm not about to give you the measurement of the few hairs that protrude farthest! I've got maybe 7cm at the nape, so the hair's way thinner at tailbone!

Without actually measuring, I voted 1-20%. My hair still has some layers left at the ends, and with trims only once a year, it's pretty wispy at the end. That's actually what I am working on most now, I was my hair to be thick all the way down (while still gaining length).

I picked %21-40. I don't measure, but i can feel the difference is a lot along the length. Even my ponytails vary in diameter :D when i make a pony on top of my head, it's iii and on nape of my neck it drops down to ii.

My base is about 3 3/4" and the end is about 2 3/4 " which is about 73%.

That is pretty good if I do say so myself. I think the major difference is that I'm trying to grow out my massively thick bangs... they are inculding the base of my ponytail but haven't reached the ends, by a long shot! So once those grow out hopefully I'll be around 95%!!!

My hair is about 1 inch from my tail bone and probably less than half as thick as my ponytail but with no natural tapering. I had layers cut in to remove some of the thickness. Still wondering if I should have a trim and get rid of the layers. My braids were a lot prettier back when it was all one length but that was all I would do with my hair.

MissManda
October 22nd, 2010, 04:39 PM
My ponytail circumference at the nape is a wee bit over 4" (4.1 or so measured tightly) and if I put my hair in a ponytail and slide the elastic down to 2" above the very ends of my hair, I get about 2", which makes me extremely happy because before I started self-trimming, my hair was plotting to taper into nothingness. If I measure my braid tassel under the elastic, I get between 2.25 and 2.75 depending on where I tie it off at.

I have layers and bangs that arent't long enough to reach the ends of my hair and I hope that with my regimen of self-dusting once a month I'll be able to thicken them up even more.

ETA: Oh, and my hair is 28" long, which is between waist and hip for me. This is why I love being a munchkin. <3

At the nape, my ponytail is just under 3". At the ends, about 1.5. So about 50%.

Cheese: I've got layers which would skew measurements. I can come back and answer in about four years when they are trimmed out...

I voted the 61-80% category because I have layers/bangs growing out, but I expect to be in the next category someday (like I used to be) !

Hair length: ~27 inches
Ponytail circumference: ~3 inches
Ends: 0-20%

I am growing my layers out so my ends are quite thin.

I voted for the thickness of cheese cause my ends taper to nothing ( can I call it fairytale ends). After seeing the results of the poll though I feel better that 0 to 20 percent is quite common :cheese:

I've got fairy tale ends, and the last two inches of my hair are really thin...

I don't think it's possible to have 80/100% since hair falls out and lots of hairs are in different stages of growth. I voted 1-20% because I'm growing out bangs, dye and straightener and although I didn't measure, I really don't think it is more than 1/5 of my pony thickness

I voted 1-20%. My tips are very thin, probably only about 15-18% of my thickness. I'm not sure what my circumference is (I haven't measured my ponytail is a long time). I'm going to guess 2.5-3. Somewhere around there.

Ponytail is 6 inches, ends are 1 1/2 (but don't look thin in comparison to the rest of my hair).

Ponytail is 4 inches, ends are 2.5 or so (measured right above where the U-hemline starts its curve). That puts me just barely in the 61-80% category (62.5%). My bangs, which I'm growing out, are between shoulder and APL, so they were included in the ponytail circumference but not the ends. I have little to no noticeable taper.

I've put 0-20% - my ends taper to nothing, sort of fairytaleish, I've not had a blunt trim for over 2 years, only S+D and a couple of light home dustings, plus my hair grows wildly uneven. Add in some nice bleach damage and voila.

I believe a video explained this once (though i forget the youtuber)
it depends on the length of your hair, as well as the fact that the actual thickness will fluctuate between 15-25% when you're near (~2 inches) your terminal length.
Obviously, the shorter your hair is the thicker the ends in comparison.

I believe mine are around 20%

My braid looks so thin in the end compared to the hair on my nape. It's quite drastic. I wouldn't say 20%, but 40% for sure, under half.

Well, my ponytail is 4" and my ends are 1 7/8". I guess that makes it about 47%, if my calculations are correct.

Much less. You're supposed to compare the cross-sectional area, not the circumference, to find out "thickness".

I can't estimate because as soon as I grew bleach out, I cut my hair in U shape and never measured it before. Now ends don't align so it would not be accurate. Why wasn't this poll here sooner argh lol.

I have fairytale ends that are much longer than the bulk of my hair. So glad I'm not the only one :) I don't really like straight cuts, and I'm OK with my ends, but a little thicker would have been nicer.

Can someone please explain how to do the math to work this out please? I think I slept in the day they handed out the maths brains.... My ponytail is 4.25" and at my ends the circumference is 1.75".

I had a massive stress induced shed a year ago and lost a lot of thickness, which is being regained but has not yet reached my ends.

I did not do the math, but my ends of my hair and my ponytail are almost the same. My hair is currently almost hip. I have pretty thick hair and it is maintained throughout the length.

my hair is super thick, and mostly all one length.
about 40" long, I have 5.9" at pony, and 5.3" near the tips.

My hair, luckily, doesn't taper much. It does taper *now* because there've been layers cut into it (CC method, shorter layers; ponytail on the forehead method). That makes it taper *quite* a bit!

My ends are like 25% of my ponytail circumference at most, which kind of sucks having a taper like that at only MBL. But, as long as it doesn't keep tapering off I'll be happy.

My ponytail circumfrence is 3 inches. I have layers, which withered my ends down to a 1-1.5 (kinda eyeballing it) circumfrence. So thats 33% I'm guessing.

I didn't measure, but I know that my ends are 1-20% of my overall thickness. I do have layers though, so that obviously skews things a bit. However, it's mostly due to heat damage (I have a lot of breakage). Now that I'm treating my hair properly, I'm excited to discover its true thickness once it grows in healthy and strong (will probably take ages).

I didn't measure but I voted 1-20 % because it has to be something like that. I have so much more taper now at MBL than I used to have at TBL. Cutting off all the damage doesn't always make your hair better-looking/healthier. I'm glad I cut my hair for other reasons because otherwise, I'd be really disappointed.
