The seashell bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=65935)!
I've also seen it called the inward spiral bun or reverse cinnamon, in case that sounds more familiar :)

LOL same here!!!
I might have to try this one too.
Is it as easy to do with classic+ length?
The instructions look complicated to me, how to manage the extra length.

Your seashell bun is beautiful! Lol, my cinnamon buns always do that too. :) I have had some luck by pinning down the sections as I go around, with little bobby pins.

My hair is too long and tapers too much to do this style as per instructions, so I had to make it like an equilibrium bun. This means wispies and general untidiness, unfortunately!

Yippee! My first time doing a "Hairstyle of the Month!" I JUST missed out on November's, but will attempt it later on my own anyway.

This worked REALLY well for my hair! I did 4, 2, then 1 finger due to my length. I like how even though my hemline is really straggly, all the ends are well hidden. It's a bit looser than I'd like to wear it out and about, but this was only my first attempt! And I think I need some fancier hair sticks other than chopsticks from the dollar store...

FYI there is no way I could have gotten this to stay with only one stick!!

Lol, we can establish a club of people who likes how seashell bun looks like, but has too much hair for it.

Pretty bun! Wonderful to see it on so many different people's hair, you're doing a great job :cheese: Yours is very tidy PaganPriestess!

The instructions are very clear, but I couldn't get mine to look like a seashell untill I twisted in the opposite way (I think PaganPriestess did it that way too). And I used my whole hand (my hands are small) and with each coil I used one finger less untill I ran out of hair. Hopefully with a little practice I can make it a bit more tidy :D My hair is classic and quite tapered.

My hair is about inch and a half longer than the first time I did it. I can't use a stick anymore..it never provides enough strength to the bun and the center always gets loose.

So I'm using my three favorite shinies and viola!

Well, I guess my seashell's broken. I couldn't get this one to work, even though I also viewed the video tutorial. By the time I tried to push it to the left side (after twisting it), it was loosing shape and becoming loose. I tried to secure it with a knitting needle (just one) and it just immediately flopped out. :-( Boo-hoo.

By the way, on the knitting needle thing: How do ya'll get hair sticks to secure, anyway? I've tried pencils, but the hair just unwinds right away. Do I need two? Do I need "real" hairsticks in order to get a secure hold? TIA....

QMacrocarpa
December 15th, 2011, 02:09 PM
Trish, there are some useful youtube tutorials by the Mei Fa folks showing general hairstick technique. Here's one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11RB82o00DY

That said, some styles work better with hairsticks than others, and I don't think I'd find it easy to make the seashell bun secure with hairsticks (spin pins do the job nicely for me, hopefully I'll get a photo taken soon).

I was pleasantly surprised by this bun. My hair usually don't do well with buns that's not wrapped with the base in the centre but this held the whole day without problems. The picture is taken after a long day at work so it's a but fuzzy but it didn't move and I didn't have to fix it during the day.

My only thing... is there another way to secure it besides bobby pins or 2 hair stix? I was hoping my 2 prong hair fork would work... but it didn't. The flexi-8 is pretty but I don't have one. Anyone else have luck?

I can't secure it with hairsticks (single or double) and my 3-prong forks too. It only held up with my 4-prong fork and Ficcares. I didn't bother with a Flexi8 because I thought it would hide the style too much - at least the Ficcare only anchors one side

Yay finally got it up and got a picture.

First time I did this style successfully, I actually managed to hold it up with a hair fork. However, when I tried it again last week (with still damp hair) it wouldn't hold. The middle fell out, but I thought that looked kind of neat so left it in for the day. It fell apart in the middle of the afternoon, but I was surprised it lasted that long :)

This time I held it up with 3 amish pins. One in the middle and 2 on the outside coil. Stayed up all day, though you can see I have fuzzy everything else.

I tried this bun when the first tutorial came on the Mane Board. It's tricky to secure well with hair-sticks, but once you get the hang of it, it's really cool.

For people with longer hair than those in the tutorials, you have to experiment with how many fingers you wrap you hair: I got it to work with 3, then 2, then 1 finger... then tucking the ends underneath.

Standard version (hair-stick + hidden hair-pin):

I liked it! My hair is just past APL and I couldn't get a big enough center coil for the thickness of my hair, but it still looks nice and makes my bun look so big! Just a medium Ficcare, starting from the side closest to the center of the spiral.

I am thinking of shaving my nape. It's so messy :P

Nooo! Don't do it!! shudder:
(Unless you're joking, in which case: )

Anyway, here is my first attempt at a style of the month.
I tried doing a regular seashell bun, but it failed horribly no matter which direction I coiled it, so I gave up and tried to do a figure 8-type bun, and it turned out like this:

From the back:

From the side, head slightly tilted back:

I'm pretty please with the result. :D
It covers the back of my head while holding the shorter hair of my growing fringe!

Thank you! :D
DBF said the same thing!!

I originally wanted to make a figure-8 bun, but instead of "flipping"(?) the top coil of a cinnamon bun, I wanted to coil my hair in two parts. (Hope that makes sense!)

I started coiling at the top (as for a high cinnamon bun), then I twisted the hair down into another coil around my fingers, spreading the coil as I went, before fixing it on my scalp with a fork (making sure to grab the center of the coil).
It held most of the day, but in retrospect, I should have anchored the top of the first coil with 1-3 pins.

Hope this helps. :)

kaiakai and Kamir0, I llove your Seashell buns! So neat! :)

I found this style rather hard to attempt! Maybe it's because of my sleek slippery fine hair....The green ribbon is from a previous half-up...and the spin pins are showing too much, but anyway, here goes:

Soooooo many nice buns! :)
I haven´t really had time to try new (or old) hair-do´s, been busy with life lately. And part of my hair toys is missing since I moved.

I realise that I'm about a month too late, but I'm so excited I don't even care. :p I finally pulled this bun off! I tried and tried and tried throughout December and it wouldn't work, and then suddenly today it just did.

Thank you!

And just to note, it was easier for me to wrap around the two fingers twice, then around the index twice, with the tiny bit of remaining ends. My thickness tapers a lot towards the ends.

Yaay I finally got this bun to work ( three months late?) with a lot of amish pins, put in at some surprising angles.

I found that I had to hold the tiniest center coil with the finger it was wrapped around (index, I think?) almost until the very end of the bun, or else all the coils got all wonky. I also had to press it really really really flat against my head to make sure I could 'weave' the amish pins through all the coils.

sumidha, that looks lovely. I found I had to pin the heck out of mine to get it to stay put in the middle.

After almost 3 months and so much practice, I am confident enough to say that I got it finally right! I used 12 amish pins 360 degrees around the main outer coil to sturdily hold it in place. The pins were long enough so I didn't need to secure from any inner coils. (Hairsticks haven't worked for me.) The seashell bun is my new favorite!

The seashell bun has become one of my favourite buns, definitely! It's so secure now I've got the hang of it! And along with my great new ficcare clip, it holds all day! And I get lovely bunwaves from it, too :)

Did it!
I was all excited I'd actually managed the HOTM, then when I checked I realised it was an old one! Still, successful seashell bun :D

It's actually kinda like the 'arrg nothing's working just twist it up in something like a bun" bun I use when all else fails, except rather than the end being tucked under and sticking out the side it's more neatly coiled. Def one I'll wear a lot. And the layers are not even sticking out to badly :D

I love this bun! I've been working to perfect it for the last couple of days and I think I've succeeded :) Whereas other buns compact my hair, this one makes me look like I have much more hair than I actually do!

I haven't been in this thread since 2012 o_O! The seashell's still one of my fave updos to do on my hair, though :D Love all the new pics!

I don't have a lot of new seashell bun pics, but I do have some recent-ish angles of a seashell bun at the end of the day - so there be flyaways xD

That is such a pretty bun....and you all rock it

My hair is so fine, slippery, and wispy.......along with my shorter torso length = a very puny bun that slips right out :rollin:

'Tis not meant for me...but I love seeing all of your creations

I managed this one at last. Tried it a few months ago and couldn't get it to hold for anything, but today it's holding nice. I think I prefer this to a regular cinnamon bun, visually.
