I have been going to my hair dresser for a few years now and as I am getting older my hair is changing. Right now I am getting an all over color (brown) along with highlights. The all over color is due to a mess up from someone else putting in too many highlights and now there is a color change when it is growing plus I am now getting some grays! My problem is the color looks great after she does it and I wait 72 hours before I shampoo after she colors it. But after my first shampoo, my hair has a red color and is not brown anymore. I have talked to her about it a few times now and I still get the same thing every time. Does anyone have any before color prep tips and/or color care instructions? I do use color safe shampoo and conditioner and only wash every other day.
Thanks.

Hello! :D

I'd say that you can prevent some damage to your hair by doing an overnight coconut (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=53786&highlight=coconut+oil) oiling and then coloring on the still oiled hair. As far as color protection goes you can try CO (conditioner only) washes (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=18) or a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner (Walmart has some: Loreal (http://www.walmart.com/ip/L-oreal-Paris-Everpure-Smooth-Shampoo-Rosemary-Juniper-Sulfate-Free-Color-Care-System-8.5-fl-oz/10996780)).

Good luck! :D

Thank you for the reply. I am new to the forum and looked at the link about coconut oil as a pre-dye treatment. Can someone please show/tell me where to find: how to coconut oil my hair? I will have to try this and I go Friday.
Thanks.

You're welcome!

Ktani has some instructions in here blog: How to save money and help save your hair from damage caused by hair dye or bleach (http://ktanihairsense.blogspot.com/2009/11/part-1-of-3-part-series-on-innovative.html). But if you want me to give you some step by step instructions here they are:
- first of all coconut oil is solid at room temperature so you'll have to melt it down. I usually just scratch off a bit (a pea sized amount) and rub it between my hands until it's melted
- you can apply it to the hair by running your hands over your hair, here is a video that habioku made pre-wash oiling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXSF-_gIqxc&feature=player_embedded). She adds it to her scalp as well and she uses olive oil, so just replace the olive oil with coconut oil and make sure all of your hair is covered.

Hope that helps. :D
