View Full Version : Considering a U-cut, opinions and experiences?

So, I've decided to get a trim. Nothing that big, max. 3cm will go (though it'll seem like a lot I'm sure, after 0,5cm trims for two years!).

My cousin who is studying to be a hairdresser and is long haired herself will do the trimming, so I feel I'll be in good hands. Right now my hairline is blunt(ish) and I'm considering if a U-cut would be better. It seems the hair on the sides gets more damage and breakage anyway so it doesn't get as long as the rest of the hair. Also a U-shape might be more flattering to my figure.

So, I've been wondering...

If I get a (mild) U-cut will it affect my braids? Will the tassel look weird?
Will it be difficult to self trim it?
Anything else?

Those of you who've had your hairline both blunt and in a U-shape, please share your experiences! :flower:

Mine is in a V shape. The only hard thing about it being in a V shape (I know your getting it in a U shape not a V shape), is that I need someone to trim it for me.

I've had both blunt cuts and U-cuts (Feye's shallow U). If it's a shallow U-cut, it won't affect your braids.

It all depends on how deep the U is cut, I guess.

Excellent advice, lapushka!

If you want to continue with braids, then a shallow u cut is ok..though you might have extra hassle with ends sticking out at the end of your braids.

A blunt hemline is more advantageous if you don't want to deal with messy ends poking up and ruining your updos.

I have a U-cut from my hair naturally growing out that way, and then I used feye's self-trim U-hemline method last February to even it out. :)

If you'd like to see photos of my hair, please feel free to look at my albums. I have a few pictures of my hair in braids, too, and I don't think the taper is too bad, nor do I have those sticking-out pieces that people with layers sometimes complain about.

I'd say go for it! :flower:

ETA: just thought I'd also mention that some people talk about how blunt hemlines lead to hair that is more difficult to tuck up underneath a bun, while slightly tapered hair is more easily tuckable. ;)

I have trimmed my hair into a U shape using Feye's method. It was easy and didn't cause any problems, and to me it looks more natural and flattering than how I looked with it straight across. I did the cut and then had my boyfriend comb it down my back and check for any uneven areas; he didn't find anything that needed fixing.

As for the braid, I have long layers so my hair wouldn't be representative of someone without them. I doubt it would mess things up.

I keep mine in a U-hem. Right now the U is pretty shallow, almost blunt cut. I like it a little steeper; it's a more graceful look (to me), but I have a new stylist.

I have problems with lots of ends poking out of my braids no matter what. I have hairs at every length because of the shed and re-grow cycle.

I love shallow U's and have had them all through my growing stages and never had a problem with braids. I have a blunt now as I like how it makes my ends look thicker, but I do find the U to be the most flattering of hemlines.

I have a ucut with layered sides & love it!!! It's very easy to trim, just use a mirror to check progress as you go and go slooow. As for braids, use gel and you'll be fine. I can french braid & cornbraid no problem.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I think a shallow U might be the cut to go for, I'm pretty sure I could come with a trimming technique to maintain that, (Feye's method somehow doesen't work for me) and it wouldn't mess with my braids or other updo's much.

And like spidermom said, there are hairs sticking from my braid too anyway. It's not that big a change I guess, it just feels like it cause throughout my growing I've kept it blunt. But the bluntness is starting to look weird and kind of forced.

Yozhik your hair is gorgeous, and the U shape is just about what I had in mind!

Now I just have to get that busy cousin of mine (who is also a great braider!) to come over and cut it!

Thanks for your help :flower:

I'm glad I could help, Mannaz, and thank you for the compliment! :D

I'd love to see pics of your hair after your cousin cuts it. :)

I have a deep U hemline, almost a V maybe (you can see in my avatar) and I really love it. My braids look fine although I imagine I have to tie it off sooner than those with blunt across hemlines. I love the way it looks, I find it to be the most flattering shape on almost anyone :) My hair grows this way naturally but I also trim to maintain the shape.

It depends on the u and the dept how dramatic the u is. I don't think for the most part the u will effect your braids.

I have a shallow U and whilst I think it looks great when it's straight, I'm somewhat doubtful that it was cut right for my wavy hair. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it looks like a U that's trying to be a V when it's wavy.

You can kind of see what I'm talking about in this shot http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6032/6304459411_0782caaf83_m.jpg and yet when it's straightened, it looks like this http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6106/6240080628_8ba2130fd8_m.jpg

I'm thinking about getting my next trim from someone who specialises in curly hair. Maybe that will make a difference??

Go for it. It won't take much to grow out if you don't like it. My wife's hair grew out from an inverted bob and eventually I trimmed it to all one layer and a blunt hem. It ended up at an angle over her chest. She then asked me to trim it dead straight across her chest. That makes it a slight U when down her back. I like it and of course, so does she!

Yozhik, yeah I'll try to take some before and photos!

Julliams I see what you mean, in the wavy picture it looks like without the longest part it would make a generous (not sure why i used that word :D) U-shape, where as in the straigtened one it is a U. it's pretty though and i just love your hair colour, its very beautiful. Is it your natural colour?

Dakarnick your right, it wont take that long to grow out if I don't like it.

I spoke to my cousin, she'll cut it tomorrow or the next week, yay! One thing though,I haven't asked if she has cut a u shape before, but I'm pretty sure she has. I'm pretty existed about this!

I have a fairly deep U-hemline with some long layers. The only parts that stick out of my braid are my bangs (which I'm growing out are currently only around BSL while the rest of my hair is just above waist). I still haven't figured out how to make those not stick out since I only just finally figured out how to french braid my own hair two nights ago! I also think the U-hemline makes the end of my braid taper significantly more near the bottom, but it still looks nice.
