View Full Version : Anyone else do top knots regularly?

I do a top knot almost everyday with my hair. It's my go-to, and it's easy. I notice that mainly people on the board do braids, buns, and ponytails. Anyone else do a top knot regularly? :)

For those of you who do not know what it is, here's a pic:
http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=top+knot&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&sa=N&rls=en&biw=1032&bih=684&tbm=isch&tbnid=a1fV73Ix4aQsLM:&imgrefurl=http://www.gallery.becomegorgeous.com/prom_and_homecoming_hairstyles/chic_top_knot_hair_style-1767.html&docid=bhqgLLhHwoe19M&imgurl=http://static.becomegorgeous.com/gallery/pictures/daniel_hersheson_hair.jpg&w=390&h=542&ei=z3XSTqftHKrw0gHlxcyJDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=803&vpy=129&dur=1238&hovh=265&hovw=190&tx=159&ty=120&sig=100032624019709453942&page=1&tbnh=164&tbnw=117&start=0&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0

If you look up the how to's to do it, I must point out I don't really follow the normal making of a top knot. I don't back comb, or worry about stray hairs. Mine are just messy. I also don't use bobby pins because I have long hair.

I don't know what a top knot is or if my hair is long enough. I might have done it in the past and didn't know it.

Yep, I do this every day after I comb out my hair and leave it up all day till I go to bed at night. Because my hair's so heavy, I have to anchor it with a chopstick. I even leave it up when I work out, and it stays up!

I see that all the time on young women! I think I wouldn't wear that but on some people it's kind of cute. :)

I do. No backcombing here either. Since my hair is still on the short side and thin, my topknot is quite small.

This is my go-to study-for-finals hair. :) Not usually so neat as in the link, and secured with a big clip. It gets my hair out of my way, can stay in all day and doesn't pull or start to give me a headache. Perfect

I wore one for the first time for a few hours yesterday. I don't think it's something I would do all the time because the ponytail base made my scalp sore. It is really cute, though. I like it with a poof in the front and a headband.

This is what I've been using for sleeping on most nights. I can never get it to the very center top of my head like that though, mine is usually at the top of my head but more towards the back. I do it like a regular cinnabun, just higher up. Don't know how the instructions say to do it.

I don't know what you mean by a top knot.
This (http://www.littlepawz.com/dog_images/shihtzu.jpg):D:D - seriously this is what comes to my mind when I read "topknot", I had no idea the term was used for humans, too.

For those of you who use the style : care to share a pic ? I wonder what it would look like in a non-fashion model way (3 hours styling, 3 bottles of hairspray, picture ediiting ...). I've never seen it worn in real life.

I do a topknot when I model for my artists because they want the hair completely off of my neck. I create it messily with a scrunchie just for the purpose of bundling it up such that it doesn't obscure the artists' view of my neck, ears, etc.

It sort of looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQa_Cni5GuQ in real life. This is the tutorial I used for mine, minus the teasing. I also took half my hair and did a loose cinnabun before wrapping loose sections around it and pinning. It holds better and adds volume.

I have never tried this one before, but it looks interesting. I might give it a shot if I can find a good tutorial. I do like to wear my hair up high sometimes, like the picture on the link you added, and this might be a fun alternative to my usual cinnamon bun.
Do you have any particular how-to's that you would suggest as a starting point?

I do a different version of the top knot then most people. I don't start with a ponytail, and I don't backcomb. I basically flip my hair over my head, and grab it so that it's sticking straight up like a rainbow troll... I then wrap it/twist it around a couple of times, so that it's coiled, and then I secure it with an elastic sideways.... I'm not good with directions... Hope this helps!

Thanks for the pictures & tutorials - however I think a lot are not really topknots, but rather, high buns. To me a top knot would mean, well, sitting on the very top of the head. I'm going to try somehow to see how the weight can be distributed, if well made it must be comfortable for the heavier-haired.

I don't do them like buns though, so... My version of a top knot?! :p

In some of the pics, my hair has been up awhile, so it may have slipped further back on my head then it usually is. Also, keep in mind I have very thick hair, so no matter what i do, my hair look big. Perhaps that's why it looks more like a bun?

I never do it. I don't like how it looks on most people. The only person I ever knew who did it (and she did it every day, throwing her bleached blonde hair up with a thin, metal clipped elastic shudder:) was a huge b#$%# to me all throughout grade school so I associate the style with her.

Reminds me of a who from Whoville.

I used to do it all the time with a hair elastic when I lived in Melbourne, because it's the official Melbourne hairstyle. Seriously, the Australians on the board will know what I mean!

No way! Really? That's pretty neat! A bunch of girls do them in my classes at Uni, but most have shorter hair... it doesn't come out looking like a giant bun on them. I've seen them do it the same way I do as well.

I do them all the time as it's my go-to style for the shower and sometimes it looks ok so I don't take it out. Mostly I just use a thick elastic, but I also find that a chopstick/pencil bun works well on top of my head too. I use a large flexi 8 to secure it and it's a little flatter than the pic you included. My head just looks better with some height on the top.

So maybe it has slipped into a lower topknot, rather than being a higher bun ? :D
From what I unterstood and seeing various tutorials, topknot defines the place it sits and then you can do any type of bun/thingy you want and it still seems to be called a topknot as long as it's high up there ?
In any case yours look cute and suits your face, maybe it requires a special face shape or whatnot, for some reason my first thought when thinking of myself with a topknot is something like "HA-HA !" (Nelson style :p ).
We shall see tomorrow, I'll take pictures if it's reasonably seeable - not holding my breath on this one :D.

I'm not really sure what the difference is between "top knot" and "bun". I was just trying to simulate the look of the bird's nest as in some of the videos. My version includes a sock bun--just my hair folded over the sock, secured by nylon elastic, then the length sectioned and swirled around the sock bun bump and pinned randomly.

My HB doesn't like it and its a little much for me, so it'll probably stay here and not go to school with me!

hmmm... well, here's a link that shows what a top knot should look like (different variations, from messy to classic and refined). The last image is what it shouldn't look like- ie. flat and bun like.

I almost always wear my hair in a top knot to bed; to protect the ends of my hair while I sleep  (My hair is getting so long, that my SO has started to roll onto it in the night :-(.) But, I don't think I would ever wear it out. It's just not my style .

Much closer to what it looks like, but more up on top... I hope the pics in the previous comment give you an idea of what I mean.

My best friend used to wear her hair like this all the time. I never really understood the trend . Also, a top knot makes my longish face look even longer, which is something that I don't want. I think this style is best for people with short round faces; as it give the face a more elongated appearance.

To me, the term just refers to a bun on top of the head, but I can see where it's desirable for them to have a bit of height.

Personally, my hair follicles start announcing their displeasure if I wear my hair going upward like this for long, so styles tend to stay below my ears. I'd consider training the follicles to get them to stop complaining, but I'm also inclined to wear hats outdoors.

Yes, a top knot is not on the back of the top of your head - that is just a high bun. A top knot is on the very toppity top of your head, like so:

I think they are very striking and pretty on the right face, but mine is too narrow and it makes me look too sharp. Plus it makes my scalp hurt to wear all my hair combed straight up in the wrong direction for very long.

I've always thought they didn't look very good... :o Girls at my university always wear them and they just look so messy and dull to me. Plus they'd look especially bad on me because anything that gives volume to the top of my head looks weird on me, even though I have a roundish face.

^ That happened to me last night! SO rolled onto my hair and I had to get it from under him (not easy considering he weighs 120 pounds more than me...) but I smiled the entire time... "HAHA my hair is long enough for that!" But I'll continue wearing my hair down at night because I'm not going for super-long lengths, I usually have gentle slumbers, and because SO prefers my hair down and I wear it up almost every day, so I let him have his way at night. ;)

Nah, top knots aren't my thing. I don't think wearing my hair up is the most flattering and I don't think a top knot would look right on me. The times that I've attempted them, I felt like a little munchkin from Neverneverland or an alien or something. Too bad, 'cause some of them look really elegant or fun.

Zesty
November 27th, 2011, 07:54 PM
I don't do that. I feel like it would look ridiculous on me, and wouldn't suit my style at all (I tend to dress fairly conservatively in a skirt and nice top, unless I'm in grunge mode or it's shorts weather). Also, my hair doesn't really do "messy." Only "sleek." Messy topknots can look good, but they're definitely not for me.

- I make them too, used to love doing them when my hair was longer, with wet hair, wake up and take it out and because the hairs had been laying in a way going up instead of normal down in a braid (hope it makes sense) i would find that I get more volume that way . . Nowadays I do them if I only have 1 hair band and I am doing something the next second that needs my hair to be away from my face, like bleaching my sidecuts etc.

For the aussies I think this is a easy go to - but usually it is not on the toppity top of the head, only some very lucky people have the fact to carry it off.

Oh well Yes I do it on the back of the top of my head, basically I have the top a slope and then the back and the slope is where I do most of my hair do's. The way I do this one is to put the pony up then take sections twist and wrap, it looks really messy but is so good for air flow.

I used to do that, but I never really considered it a "top knot"...I guess in my pre-LHC days, your version was simply "putting it up." My ends stick out at funny angles when I do it your way, but it looks really cute on you. How do you find an elastic to hold up all your hair that way?

LOL It's about the only updo that I can do correctly. Although my version is LHC friendly so no backcombing or anything else...just twist it up & secure...normally with a claw clip.

I certainly do!!! I actually do a variation on it for when I don't have anything to put my hair up with, it's a cinnabun on top of my head loosely, then the whole bun is tucked under scalp hair. It looks a little weird, but it holds fairly nicely.

Mine fall down a lot too. And they slide. It's part of their charm lol.

These: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/conair-styling-essentials-up-do-pins/ID=prod6062590-product help a lot with long hair updos especially messy ones. Bobby pins are worthless IMHO.

I use a regular elastic without any metal clips. Not thicker than usual or anything. I wait for them to get loose, and then there's enough elastic for all my hair. Whenever I get a new elastic I have to stretch it out first so that all my hair first in it, even just for a ponytail.

I must say it looked lovely with my butterfly hairtoy that I love, and it lasted a lot more, because the weight wasn't only on the hairtoy but, well, in the top of my head, so it was much more comfortable :)

I wore a top knot today inspired by this thread :D
I must say it looked lovely with my butterfly hairtoy that I love, and it lasted a lot more, because the weight wasn't only on the hairtoy but, well, in the top of my head, so it was much more comfortable :)

Thanks for suggesting this!

Yay! Rock it lady! :D

I didn't know this hairstyle had a name, I have always thought of it as a lazy ponytail. My hair looks like this almost every day. I never looked at it from the back until today. My son is teething and had been crying all night so my face is kind of scary. ETA sorry for the huge pics, I don't know how to resize them.

I usually make a top knot when I take shower or when I cook. I like it, but can't wear it for a longer time because it pulls the hair on my forehead.

Hey ladonna,

It needs to be more on top of your head for it to be a top knot. If you take a picture of yourself, you should be able to see it straight on, when you face the camera.

I'm not a fan of this look. I like high buns, but once it is right on top of the head I think it looks a little silly. Sorry guys!

I do wear it to bed in this style though, it's perfect for that for me.

This is my go-to study-for-finals hair. :) Not usually so neat as in the link, and secured with a big clip. It gets my hair out of my way, can stay in all day and doesn't pull or start to give me a headache. Perfect

Yep, me too. Just get up, mess it up in a knot, and off you go.

I find there is different ways of doing a top knot. When I'm feeling retro I do a sock bun at my crown and keep it loose so it ends up looking very Adele like. This is the closet picture I have to what I do, though sometimes I do it a bit higher if my look of the day goes together.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Irina21/slenderette1.jpg

For the top knot I go with this tutorial and I get an excellent result. I'm not really a fan of my fried, dead ends sticking out so this helps to hid them. It's from Lauren Conrad, though I can no longer find it on her site, so I'm happy I saved it onto my computer. I really love this look and wear it nearly everyday. It's perfect for my length and my naturally fuzzy hair (no backcombing in order to get some oomph for me!). I don't curl my ends, I feel like there is really no need, you end up hiding it anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v43/Irina21/5940013553_de4df9b9c3_b.jpg

Apologizes, I don't have the best lighting in the dorms. It's really easy, quick, and versatile, I can basically wear this with sweats or something a little more fancy. My hair is a little crinkled since I wore it in a french braid all day, but it's basically turns out like this. Also, my hair is maybe a few inches shorter than the model, so I feel APL might be able to achieve the look.

Nope, the few times I tried wearing my hair smack on top of my head (mostly to get it out of the way), I ended up with a very sore scalp. My hair doesn't like going in that direction, apparently.

All the pictures looks very cute with this style!

My hair is too straight and fine for the messy bit.

I do wear a knot bun right on top of my head, though. I twist the hair fairly tightly and allow it to coil in on itself, wraping the 2nd and 3rd coils underneath the first, then using the first coil (made from the hair closest to my head) as a hair slide, I put a stick over that coil, under whatever's in the middle, and over the coil on the other side. This makes an asymetrical bun. For me it solves some pulling problems, although moving the bun up or down from day to day really helps most - wearing it at all levels.

Wish I could rock the messy version - not enough hair.

I always wear my hair in a top knot for bed. Because of my amount of hair, I have to modify mine a bit. I start with a ponytail on the very top, but I have to twist my hair into a coil and then wrap the coil around the ponytail base and knot the end up and over the ponytail elastic in the back. That's what is so neat about top knots, you can make it your own and do it messy, neater, whatever you like. I don't like mine messy. I think it's super comfy and I will admit to wearing one out in public once in a while. I usually try to do the same type of knot but further back on my crown for going out in public, but sometimes I am lazy :)
Here I am this very moment, in my pajamas and heading to bed with my top knot :

I feel unbalanced and wibbly with my hair on top of my head. I don't know whether it's because of my terrible sense of balance or because of my funny shaped head, but even if I can get my hair to stay up like that I think I'm going to fall over :p

You should have seen it before I cut my hair, when it was tailbone length. Good grief, it looked crazy but it was still so comfortable. The nice thing about coiling your length like I do, is that the knot in the back can be adjusted for almost any length, so it will work for shorter hair as well as really long hair. I hate outgrowing a style and I have never had to worry about that with this one. When I first joined here I decided I was going to learn all these beautiful, fancy buns but they just didn't work with my hair and it frustrated me. I finally decided that my top knot was just meant to be :)

I knew this girl who wore her hair in a top knot almost every day and her hair grew really fast. I mean like 6 inches in a just a few months. It must be super protective!

I can't do it personally because my hair underneath is all different lengths thanks to stress and losing hair (I have a bald spot and a section of hair that's only a few inches long) and bleach causing me to lose a few inches off of the very bottom hairs. I like it though!

ummm... I'm not sure. It's never hurt me. I usually wear my hair up like this all day, every day, and even at night. I only wash my hair once a week, so besides when I brush it, that's the only time when it's down. It does start to hurt around day 3 or 4, if I don't leave it down for at least 10 minutes while brushing...

Not stick out because it's bad, but because it's kind of unusual - at least around here! In my mind, I associate a top knot like yours with a particular kind of artsy university or college girl. Actually, that's probably why I don't do it - girls with top knots always seemed to be pretty, thin, self-confident and popular with the boys. Definitely not me! LOL

I loooove topknots!

They're my go to style too. I can't wait for longer hair though because my knot will be so much bigger.

Here's a picture of mine. It's not too bad considering my puny not-quite-APL hair:

I'm afraid my hair's way too heavy to style in a top-knot. I do remember fixing it that way for a piano class once, before I knew about Amish hair pins, and how when I bowed after playing the entire bun and all 27 bobby pins took a painful dive toward the floor.

I laugh now.

bah, my hair is too straight and slippery to do the messy top knot like everyone else :( maybe I am doing something wrong. So instead I just made a high ponytail on the top of my head and then made a messy bun and secured it with a hairstick.

Yep, I do this every day after combing my hair out in the a.m., usually anchored by a chopstick. Keeps it out of the way and untangled. Won't hold when I go the gym, though, because my hair is so heavy. Then I have to resort to a crown braid...

I just wore my hair like this the other day. I kinda like it. Although my hair is only APL so its a teensy tiny bun, but pulling all the hair high shows off cheekbones so I might stick with. Plus when my hair gets longer I should get some pretty bun waves.

Sometimes. It makes me look sort of like a deranged cockatoo, though, since the resulting bun is huge, floofy, and yellow.

So... one has to be in a very particular mood to go around looking like that.

I do top knots when I go to bed... But during the day it would be too distracting. I think my hair is too long... but I would love to see examples of hip length hair in a top knot! It is a really comfortable way to wear your hair. It keeps the weight nicely balanced.

Not constructed the same way- no looping or braiding. Just looping and being messy. Also not secured the same way.

I wear my hair like this 99.9% of the time. It's my go-to and great for people with layers unlike buns which can be hard with uneven pieces! I do it when my hair is wet in the morning. I pull it forward and it looks like a shiney updo. The crazy thing is, I get compliments all day long. People always ask me how I do it and I always tell them it couldn't be easier!

No way, no how.

I hate having messy hair! I have tried putting a bun on top of my head and it looks flat goofy. My neck hairs normally fold into my buns, but they are not long enough to reach to the top of my head and stay so I have chunks of six inch long hair at my nape and my scalp hair does not comb smoothly when I do high buns, so I get scalp cleavage as well and lumpy bits. Ick.

As for the ponytail start ones, that would be much too damaging for me! I'm still trimming out old pony tail damage where my nape once was as my hair grew from securing my hair that way. I won't do any style that starts with one as the base.

My follicles too protest at going against the grain, so if I do even a normal high updo, I can't leave it in all day. I do mine lower instead. I've seen girls at uni do a similar style only not up high where they looped a ponytail around into a messy bun. Usually worn with pajama pants and flip flops. I wouldn't be caught dead like that, but it was very popular. Didn't bother me any, but I passed on that trend. I see top knots the same way. Messy. Not my thing.

Thats exactly how I wear/make mine, it used to be my go to style almost every day before LHC, these days ive been enjoying experimenting with all the fancy LHC buns. At the moment i'm trying to avoid elastics and wear hairsticks only, maybe i should try a topknot with a stick though

I don't wear them except sometimes to bed. I can't stand the way they look on me, and the majority I've seen look messy on other people too. Maybe I don't like them on others because I'm jealous that they look so terrible on me.

I saw a girl on the train yesterday wearing one and it made her head look mis-shapen because it was falling down funny at the back.

My hair just really doesn't like being pulled up high like that. I have to fight with it to get it all up there, and then it tingles oddly the entire time, like I'm tugging at the follicles or something. And if I leave it up like that too long, it actually hurts coming back down. I've wondered a few times, though, if I wore my hair up more often, if I could possibly "train" my hair to this position and maybe give it a bit more volume, since it's very flat normally.

I don't know if I posted here or not but I should have because this is my go-to hair style!

I have never really mastered a bun but I learned the top knot when I was young from a friend of mine who grew up in Malaysia.

The way she taught me (and how I do it) is to turn your head upside down and twist your hair until it coils back on itself and then wrap it around and wrap the ends under the coils and then turn your head right side up.

If you hair is long enough and you have done it correctly the hair will hold itself in place.

Right now my hair isn't quite long enough to stay by itself so I usually either stick a pin through it or put a scrunchy around it. Both work well.

I sleep in this style and it is pretty much the only way I wear my hair up because I like the 'heighth' of it :D

I make them from elastic, same effect. And I do my top knot almost the same as you, except not the "sideways" part... do you mean you loop it over the bun like, vertically? I tie it around the base of the knot and it holds because my hair likes to grab itself.

It's funny how vaguely glamourous this style feels for so little effort.

Top knots are one of those styles that are really hit or miss... Some people look adorable with them (Amber_Maiden, for example!) but then I see girls around my university campus who just look absolutely ridiculous. I can't quite pin down what the difference is. I suppose part of it is a messy top knot is just a high bun. The silly looking people have teased, perfectly round balls the size of a second head sitting atop their heads...

ETA: Oh god! Those hair ties from pantyhose are so simple! Why did I never think of that? *Runs to find old pantyhose*

What I dislike is the super super lazy version, where it's a ponytail folded in half on top of the head, and it flounces when they walk, so they look like tall blond quail.

I'm all for low effort but it's not that much harder to make a real bun, so I don't get it.

I wear a top knot from time to time: it's a very comfortable and secure style for me. I hardly ever wear it outdoors though, because I don't think it flatters the shape of my face. But the style is quite popular here: just a few days ago my brother (!!!) mentioned the style, telling me how it's THE fashion hairstyle of this summer and that I should wear it. Apparently, his girlfriend tipped him about this style suitable for his unfashionable, extremely longhaired sister :-D
