View Full Version : Half up for pictures

Hi All! I need the wisdom of the group - it's family picture time. . . Since I'll be wrangling a 18 month old, I don't want my hair all down - so I'm thinking 1/2 up would be nice. My hair has gotten fairly heavy (just past bsl) and when I clip the front up it pulls really flat on the top - maybe not the best look for a picture. . . I do have some side bangs, and want to avoid the loose bangs/slicked back long hair look I sometimes get.

Any ideas for how to anchor a secure but looser 1/2 up. Tutorials? Pictures? Twists? A friend of mine does a really cute peacock twist with her 1/2 up, twisting then flipping the ends over, making a hair cascade, but we couldn't figure out how to anchor that with my heavier longer hair without it falling to the side.

I'm feeling a little hair challenged. Of course, if we could have the back of my head in the photo I can do some great buns. . . ;-)

I know what you mean... with half-ups I tend to get a funny flat look that isn't flattering, and if I put my hair up I look bald and my ears are funny, but if I leave it down it's a lot of trouble... I've been solving that by doing a braid-over-the-shoulder for pictures, with my chin-length bangs in front of my ears. It looks really soft around my face and lets people know I have hair lol. I don't know if something like that (a side braid?) might work for you, or if it would be too informal or too short, but I thought I'd offer it up. You could also maybe just try to pull wispies out to make the half up less flat and strange looking.

I hope you do figure something out that works, sometimes pictures can be very frustrating.

Zesty, I had not thought of a braid - I like that option - contained yet hair visible - I'll experiment with a braid - luckily I have a few weeks! Keep those suggestions coming - thank you!

How about a lace braid head band?

Or there is this fairy tale braid.

these still might leave to much hair down but maybe you could keep it that way for the pics, bring hair sticks and then bun it once your done or even in between shots?

Hope this help Torrin has lots of really cool up do's in addition to this maybe you can find something.

You could do a topsy turvy (don't know if that's what you guys call it...where you make a pony, then flip the pony over and through the hair above the hair band...if the makes sense?!) I always find that moves the pressure from the top of my head to the side, but then you could still have it half up.

Here's a lovely tutorial on the lace twist braid for shorter hair:

If you wanted, you could GENTLY and slightly pull a few hairs forward to give it a softer look.

I like the twin braided hair styles.

AWESOME suggestions. I've been watching video links and will do a couple of trial hair days. I had totally forgotten about topsy turvy and haven't tried with my length. And a crown twist/braid might be perfect if I can do it - I also liked the double rope braids. . . Thank you everyone for the suggestions - I'll check back and see if there are more - hope this helped others, too!
