View Full Version : Awesome picture of my great grandmother

My mom used to have this picture hanging up in our house somewhere but then we moved and lost it....then I discovered it in an album at my grandmother's house.

This is my great grandmother at age 17. IIRC she contracted scarlet fever or something not long after this photo and all her hair fell out. She only wore it short after that.

It has a great dreamy quality to it, and actually strongly reminds me of J.W. Waterhouses' paintings. :crush:

I LOVE looking at old pictures, it's just so interesting to realise those people were alive back then. I don't know how to explain it, but I find it really intrigueing. Beautiful hair and girl by the way.

That picture is really amazing - your great grandmother was very beautiful, and her hair was extremely thud-worthy!

You should take a picture in a similar pose, in similar clothing - something for your relatives to see. Plus, fun!

Wow! I absolutely love older long hair photos.

I always wonder what products (or lack of) they used on their locks.

My mom always said that when she was younger, they washed their hair less than once a week (1950s). I imagine it was similar in the early 1900s.

I love old photos. Girls and ladies used to have such long hair, but their hard-working ways required them to pull it back and up. In the Little House books, Laura talks with her little sister Carrie about when she's older she will have to put it up (a coming of age thing?) rather than wear it down in braids. Also, in another book written by Laura's daughter Rose, Rose says she remembers when her mother would let her hair down to brush it, it would touch the floor (this is when Laura would have been 25ish) and how Laura loved to be able to let her hair down because the weight was so much when it was bunned. Long hair isn't prized like it used to be.

Gorgeous photo. Such a shame to lose a head of hair like that.

Darklion, scarlet fever doesn't cause hair loss, but in those days they often cut the hair very short or even shaved the heads of patients, partly out of superstition that long hair sapped your energy, and partly because it was easier to keep a patient cool when fighting an illness that brought on a fever.

This is true they did cut very long hair for health reasons, my grand mother told me she had her classic length hair cut in to a bob because her dr believed her thick hair was the reason she kept fainting!

I wonder, does your hair have similar waves? I imagine that your great grandmothers are braid waves. I looked at your picture and I think your face is a little thinner than hers, but your eyes look like hers. You are both very beautiful! Thank you for sharing this photo.

My mom always said that when she was younger, they washed their hair less than once a week (1950s). I imagine it was similar in the early 1900s.

My neighbour has a 1930's manual for young girls education and, on the chapter of hygiene, the say you should wash your hair every three weeks. :eyebrows:

Nice picture by the way, I love old pictures - my avatar is a picture of my great-grand-aunt. :)
