View Full Version : How often can diluted tea tree oil be used?

Right now I'm oiling and washing my hair twice a week. I only CO. Sometimes when I feel like I need it I shampoo with a SLS free one and then I deep condition after.
My dilema is that I have really taken a liking to tea tree oil. I put a few drops and mix it with some castor and evoo. I apply that to my scalp really well and massage it in. My length gets evvo or coconut appiled to it. My scalp feels so clean after and my hair feels nice too! I think I could ditch the shampoo for this mix!
Would it be okay to do this 2x or once a week? I was orginally leaving out the tea tree oil most of the time and only doing it once per month. I know that tea tree oil is controversial and said to be dangerous, but I can't remember exactly why (well except causing boob growth in males, I heard this wasn't true though---plus I would like bigger boobs :p)
Also since tea tree oil is antifungual, I'm thinking it might work like monistat does :ponder: I'm not sure though. I would love to test it out...I'm just not sure if tea tree oil is safe.

Thanks. Hmmm...I wonder what they meant by large quantities. I only use a few drops and heavily dilute it. Maybe once every 2 weeks is fine. I just don't want those side effects.

You are very welcome.
I would simply be careful with it and if you notice any adverse reactions, cut back or stop using it. "Large quantities" means different things to different people, even when dosages are spelled out. Also, with dosages, it is about individual tolerance and sensitivities.

I think I'm going to try this with the tea tree oil I have.

Do you know how often she did it/how much tea tree oil she used?? And if she diluted it?
My hair actually feels more moisturized after I do it.

Tea tree oil dries my hair out something awful too. I can't use it. If it is working for you, I wouldn't give it up unless I stops doing what you like. Everyone is different !

I think your safe to use it properly diluted. Just stop using it if you get a bad reaction.
I'm not sure it'll work like monistat though, the anti-fungal properties come from other things than in monistat... I don't know the chemistry behind this, maybe someone else will explain this.

*bump*
I want to try exactly this! I've been off hormonal birthcontrol for a few weeks now, and I took it only for my acne. Now I stopped, my skin and scalp are really oily! I wanted to try some Tea Tree Oil mist in between washes.. so... did it work for you cheetahfast? Or anyone else?

I think it is fine to use. You have it diluted, so that is a plus. I have lemon tea tree shampoo and I also have a diluted vinegar rinse with 3 drops tea tree (in a 16px bottle) that I can use daily with no problem. Well, I can use the rinse everyday, not the shampoo. I use the shampoo to clarify as it would be too drying for everyday use, it is an oily skin/hair version.
