View Full Version : Your wedding hair

I don't know about all of you, but I've always speculated about, should I get married, my wedding hair will be like. It's varied a bit through the years, but has generally been somewhere along the lines of long, loose, curly, and bohemian. Something like this:

But I want to hear about what YOU wanted. Or better yet, show me! I'd love to see pictures of your ideal wedding day hair. :D

(If you're a guy, post. If you've already been married, post. If you've never thought about wedding hair, START SPECULATING AND POST. Seeing a trend here? ;))

I am not one to fantasize about weddings, but I always prefer loss hair on brides. :) There's just something so classical and lovely about it, but on some it's wild and has a very unique charm.

i really love curly-waxy hair, wearing it down or with a half updo decorated with flowers or with a tiara for western weddings

for really long hairs i like braids with flowers or jewelry

in my wedding i weared it totally covered...just one tikka in the forehead...
i think so in my walima( wedding party, i didnt had it yet, waiting my documentation get ready so i can travel and do it since here in usa not me or my husband have family) i will wear a braid

My hair was wavy and bohemian for my wedding, and long! :) I have pics in one of my hair albums. You might have to add me to see it.

Originally I wanted my hair to be long and curly and flowy and then I came to my senses and remembered that I chose a June wedding in the Northeast, and that I'm figet-y.

The stylist made a giant bun of curls on the back of my head, and then put silk rosebuds around the edges (I didn't have a veil). It was beautiful, even in the 100% humidity we had that day and stayed pretty despite swing dancing with DH. I'm trying to find a good picture of it. Once I do I'll put it in my album. I always disliked the little tiaras women seem to wear when they get married...but I'm totally doing some time of braid/twist crown updo or something. I wear it pretty regularly anyway, and it's much more "me" than wearing it down.

wow, you made me remind my biggest reason why i wanted long hair.. haha 5 years ago Mariah Carey had a song and in the video she got married, she wore her tailbone length hair(extensions) loose and very wavy.. I loved it so much and from then on i knew if i ever get married i want my hair to look like that..

I am getting married next year and I am leaning towards making ribbons out of the same materials my dress will be made off (yes my mother will probably make my dress, and no it will not be white I much rather want a nice evening gown I can use many times than a dress I use only once.) and then do Elizabethan hair taping with it. I am also considering doing Arwen's battle braid or something like Princess Leia's side buns then then lust pin ropes of beads between the two buns to make a sort of short veil made entirely out of dozens of ropes of beads hanging between two buns.

I had tailbone length hair at the time of my wedding. I put it in a high ponytail, then took a portion and made a bun on top of the ponytail. I put a fancy gold bun cage over the bun, and left the ponytail cascading down from it.

Nice idea, but I had just moved to Florida, and hadn't yet learned to tame the frizzies my wavy hair gets in humid places. I don't know if I have any photos that show the entirety of the hairstyle.

For my wedding reception ceremony in India I had my hair done by someone else. Here is the style the salon girls did:

That's beautiful! GeoJ, yours is beautiful too!

I had my shoulder-length waves pinned in a loose twist. It was pretty, but I don't have any pictures. Kind of a yucky, bad memory, really.

In a do-over, I would wear it down and let my waves run wild.

I'm not sure yet, I'd love loose and wavy with an accent braid or something. I will want to take into account what my boyfriend likes. He loves my hair up. He has grown out his beard for me, I could have an updo for him!

GeoJ That picture is amazing, do you know how it was done, is there any tutorials for that hairstyle? It is just so beautiful.

Thank you! No tutorials. That was in 1998, but I think this was what they did:
1. Put the front into a high half up with a barrette that matched my hair color.
2. Did a slightly loose thin French braid down from the half up.
3. Made a ponytail at the nape.
4. Sectioned the ponytail and made rolls of hair.
5. Fixed the rolls in place (with large sturdy bobby pins and hairspray, I think)
6. Added small flowers to the French braid.
7. Pinned the garland of jasmine flowers over the top of the ponytail of rolls.
8. Added the jewellery (not visible in the photo) from the barrette to my forehead in the front.

On another note, I couldn't find any decent photos of my wedding hairstyle, so I drew a quick sketch of what it roughly looked like (minus the frizzies :) ), it's here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3358&pictureid=119076).

I was married back in 1996. My now-husband asked me to wear my almost-knee-length hair down for the ceremony.

My hair is smooth, no ripples, waves or curls. It is the colour red of the Pre-Raphaelites models (think Big Red, not I Love Lucy!) and has never had any colourant touch it.

I chose my dress with ease, knowing my hair would be down (so, no big bustles, bows or frou-frous on my behind). I had to insist to the wedding dress shop gal that I would not be wearing a veil, nor a headdress. She was really insistent. I told her I look ridiculous in hats or headcoverings. She still insisted. So, I relented and agreed to try the one on that she said went with my dress. She put it on me, adjusted it a bit and then stood back to look at her handiwork.

She said, "You're right, you do look ridiculous!"

I did opt to wear a simple headband (you know, the kind that look like a sideways letter C) that was covered with the same ivory shantung silk as my dress). In doing so, my hair became the veil and looked really pretty.

My bridesmaid pulled a little back from either side and gathered those two sections into a braid, using some ivory silk ribbon as the third part of the braid. I also had/have bangs. It was very simple and very comfortable.

Is there any way to edit our posts??

I meant to add that the rest of my hair hung down straight, with the single ribboned braid hanging down on top of the rest of my hair.

my wedding hair is in my "A Victorian Wedding" album, and if I had to do it over, I think I would go with an updo, and a really fabulous hair comb, something like the Victorian updo and comb in my hair album...I did not wear a veil, and I wanted to show off my length, but looking back now, the period I chose rather did need an updo, and I don't think my hair turned out particularly nice, but such is life, the rest of my wedding was a dream come true :)

I'm getting married next year and I'm dreaming about something like that:

Some sort of long, curly, side bun. I think it will make me slimmer, along with a A line wedding dress :)

For my own wedding I'm probably going to just have a basic bun with a nice veiling, maybe even flowery lace. I really love the look of those buns with some hairs left loose and curled a bit to frame your face, but I'm not sure how to do that with my hair.

Early last year for my dad and step-mom's wedding (I was a bridesmaid and didn't wear a headcovering full-time then) I actually allowed them to coerce me into a salon. The hairdresser took a look at my straight waist-length hair and kept saying, "your hair is so long... what can I do with hair this long?!" I was half afraid she'd decide to cut it!

So 2 hours, 60 bobby pins (I counted), 4 hairpins, numerous curlers and what must have been an entire bottle of hairspray later, this was the result:

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn147/Phoenix51200/Photos/DSCF8078.jpg?t=1277233927

It looked better than I expected, but I'm not so sure I'd want to go through that again!

I never fantasized about my wedding. It turned out to be a potluck party in DH's uncle's back yard, I wore my favorite dress that I'd had for 3-4 years (a guest almost wore the same dress she told me, but I wouldn't have cared), and DH's sister put the curling iron to my barely shoulder-length hair and I had what I think they call beachy waves. I wonder if I have a picture around here somewhere.

I had originally intended on putting my hair in an intricate updo, and my stylist requested I cut my BSL hair to my shoulders so that the updo would sit right on my head. Right after I got it cut, DH asked that I wear my hair half up and curly with a black feather fascinator. I'm still waiting for professional pics.

I ended up needing MBL extensions to make the style look right, d'oh!

I didn't do anything fancy or unusual with my hair for my wedding. I had BSL hair at the time and I just had it loose in my unstyled everyday (slightly messy :p) waves with a couple of pretty little clips to keep it mostly out of my face. I left one long curl loose at the front on either side to frame my face a bit. No other hair toys. Just a veil towards the crown of my head. I'd post a pic but it's really exactly how it sounds!

I would probably do a braided half-up (beavertail if I have time to do it myself), probably with a swirly silver circlet rather than a traditional tiara. A couple of bits hanging in front of my ears to soften up my face a bit.
Think "elves" and thats about the look I would like to aim for.

I love the thought of wearing my hair down and loose for my wedding. No over the top styling, because that isn't me at all. I would choose a flower garland or ivy wreath rather than a veil.

For my wedding, I refused to have makeup done, or wear a hairstyle I did not normally wear, because I look at many of my friends wedding pictures, and they don't look like themselves. I wanted to look like me, so we went with a simple braid, my stepsister put a flowered hair fork in for decoration, and I wore the veil my sister made me. This made the morning relatively stress-free, and the best part is that my tender scalp did not hurt and there weren't any hot-spots when I took my hair down at the hotel that night.

I always imagine it being half-up with some sort of pretty jeweled pin and wavy or in a loose french-braid-to-a-bun. Of course, I'd have to put it up somehow to dance- dancing with hair down turn into disastrous tangles.

I am getting married in May. I haven't decided exactly what I want to do with my hair yet.

Definitely want it mostly down, as both I and my fiance prefer it that way. Probably would like it wavy, maybe with the front bits pinned back so they stay out of my face. But I want a veil too, so it needs to be a style that you can wear a veil with.

We had a DIY wedding, so neither my hair nor the pictures are fancy. Like a previous poster, I wanted to look like me, so I did my hair more or less the way I always do it, just with a little more care. I honestly hadn't looked at my wedding hair so closely before today! It was a little bumpy on top, but oh well.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7042&pictureid=119197

I combed it (believe it or not), twisted back the sides in a roll, pinned the roll, then twisted up the back and clipped it with my favorite barrette, leaving the ends to dangle naturally.

I always wanted a half up with most of my hair down in flowing waves and the top in some sort of elegant braid, but once I got my dress I didn't want to cover the back of it. I went to 3 different hairdressers paying for 3 different trials (there's a thread somewhere here documenting it all!) and ended up doing my hair myself. :) I followed this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPHEzUr5bWQ , but I turned the end into a side rose bun. I put pretty hairpins every few twists instead of a tiara and a huge flower clip in the center of the bun (that my DH picked because he said it looked like a orchid, which were our flowers.)

I took these myself that night because so many on this site helped me to come up with my hairstyle and I wanted to show them how it turned out. :) Keep in mind these photos were done in the bathroom in the hotel around 3 am so they are fuzzy (as is my hair) and the color is bad. :)

:spitting: :eyebrows: That's awesome! It was really fun, even though I wore an actual dress - a ball gown affair with a huge tulle skirt and beaded corset top (and no bra!!). Wearing that dress was like wearing a force field; I felt like Moses parting the Red Sea wherever I went.

Mine was a downdo. It was too thick to get all of it into the octopus clip I had fastened pearls and white ribbon to, just for the occasion. So this was the best my daughter (behind me in the pink dress, six months along with my grandson and serving as my matron of honor) could do. Instead of putting it in a bun and covering it with the clip, like we wanted to do, she put it in a ponytail and clipped over that. It's hard to see the clip, with the candles right near it. Almost looks like the clip is part of one of the candles.

Well, mine was barely shoulder length at my wedding. We had a simple elopement (in our living room!), and I wore a knee-length vintage print dress. I wanted a bouffant/beehive type hairstyle, and I actually managed to do it myself. I clipped a big purple dahlia into the back (it matched my dress), and it was perfect.

It's tough to make out in the picture (the flower is almost as dark as my hair), but you can see the shape, and my awesome dress :D

I wore my hair down and curled. Unfortunately by the end of the night the curls had nearly completely left my hair. This isn't the most clear photo of my hair but it was the only one I could easily find, I have more pictures in my LHC wedding album but it's friends only.

I don't have any particular ideas at the moment, the only thing I am certain about the style is that I don't want it all up in a bun. I'd like to have my hair either loose, or partly back, perhaps a half-up.

The other thing that I am certain of is that I want my hair to be its natural colour - which means getting rid of these highlights. If I keep my hair at its present length, it will take until the beginning of 2014 to get back to my natural colour. The other option is to cut the highlights off, which would get rid of them sooner, but would leave my hair a lot shorter than I'd like it to be.

This is stunning!!!!

My wedding hair -

http://i42.tinypic.com/21ah8c1.jpg

I wore a lace cap with vintage and handmade flowers on it -
(my hair here is hidden by my flowers! Which, for the record, were NOT THE ONES I ORDERED! But that's another thread...)
http://i42.tinypic.com/2z83ols.jpg

Love all of this--even though they weren't the right flowers!

I wore mine in a really simple updo. I wanted more attention on my dress and my face than my hair.

Stunning dress---good choice going simple with the hairstyle.

What I wanted for my wedding was a strapless lace dress, and long flowing curls. I decided to get married a lot sooner that I thought I was going to so I only had a couple months to put together a DIY wedding. I did not get my strapless lace dress :(
I ended up with a silk dress with some back interest, and that directed my hairstyle. I felt that down hair just wouldn't look good against the criss-cross back straps.
I went with a messy updo with fresh flowers. I'm not a veil kind of girl.

Since I DIY'd my wedding, I was literally running around in jeans setting things up 20 minutes before the ceremony.
I had only 20 minutes to do my own hair and make-up and throw on my dress. I sort of regret doing my own hair. I would have liked to have had some volume and maybe better curls, and in hindsight I would not have parted my hair down the middle if I had really thought about it!
Also--because we were in such a hurry to get ready(it was raining), my daughter inexplicably puts one rose dead center at the back of my head. I did not realize this until I got some pictures back. We were in such a hurry I never made sure of how it looked from the back.
I also regret not having a pro phtographer taking pictures.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/LHC%20pictures/002-4.jpg

So then it rained on us:

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/LHC%20pictures/004-1.jpg

From the front, the rain is already making the curls go limp:

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/LHC%20pictures/001-4.jpg

And the back, it pretty messy by now:

There's also so many beautiful bridal updos here! I really wish I had found LHC before my wedding day :o I would have done things differently. I grew out my hair because I've always envisioned myself with long hair down when I get married but the stylist had a mind of her own and did mine up.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that all the pictures in this thread are stunning. I love that of all the different styles, the common thread is gorgeous but natural looking hair. Nobody looks shellac'd or uncomfortable!!

I was so, so, so lucky to be able to get my hair done at Madora George Michael in NY. It was such a treat. I actually got my hair done the day before my wedding and wrapped my head in toilet paper overnight. When I woke up it was perfect, just like Vinnie (the woman who did my hair at MGM) said it would be.

http://i.imgur.com/NWZas.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/X6pfk.jpg

Vinnie at MGM gave me the one hour deep treatment, set my hair in rollers, then did this beautiful knot with *maybe* 10 bobby pins, and just a tiny, tiny bit of their George Michael hairspray. I loved it. The BEST part of it all, though, was definitely meeting Maria Matarazzo and getting to look through her photo albums while I was getting the treatment. Five albums of her travels, George Michael's clients, and tons of long, long, beautiful hair!!

I couldn't get away with NOT having a ceremony - my father is a minister. But erm, yeah, not traditional in the least. Black tealength dress. Black veil. October 30th. It was FUN to say the least, and that was the most important part.

But it was so worth having my SIL do my hair up pretty.

Goodness, it has been such fun to see your wedding hairstyles. So beautiful! I didn't have the lovely flowing mane that many of you have in your photos, but that's OK. I got married in 1999, and I wanted to wear my mom's tiara that she wore for her wedding in 1963. A friend of ours who is in the theater and also styles hair did my updo. I loved that he got the majority of my hair into, what should I call them?, rolls within the tiara. He set my hair on rollers the day before the wedding, and then styled it with the tiara the morning of at the church. It's hard to see very clearly, but I hope you enjoy my photo--such a wonderful day! And I still so enjoy being married to my best friend!

My wedding was sort of similarly low key.

My partner and I are both really quiet introverts, so we asked two good friends to be witnesses (with their baby boy). And then we ran off to the State Capitol and got married under the dome by a judge. And since I was getting dressed in rather a hurry... I stuffed my hair in a braid since that's one of my default styles.

Maybe next year for our anniversary we can do something a bit spiffy. It's fun to play dress up, but no one wants to deal with a party where the bride and groom try to hide under a table!

This is what I plan to do, too! No makeup (I've never worn it and never plan to) and I'll have my hair down, or maybe in a half-up. DH would LOVE if I wore my hair down and natural. Also, I tried out some updos with my dress on... and it looks stupid. I'm a huge fan of the Victorian era, but I'm also a huge geek Lord of the Rings fan, so if I get married it'll either be a Victorian high curly going-on on top of my head or it'll be an Arwen-inspired hair-down-with-braids with her crown that she wears at the end of LOTR III (I actually bought a replica of it). I have yet to decide, but I also have yet to be proposed to XD.

My hair was really simple - you can see it better here where the veil was half coming off (it was sooo windy outside, which is why my hair also looks kind of a windswept mess!) I had my parting slightly to one side and pinned back a section of my hair on either side, leaving a loose little wurly bit at the front:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vnqW6sJ38S4/Tsfiv7gRA0I/AAAAAAAAAGk/625EjgS5HgI/s1600/weddinghair4.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Fgna9taDxDM/TsfiwjZ261I/AAAAAAAAAG0/YeBbRGECoIM/s1600/weddinghair2.jpg

^
The veil I really liked because my hair tends to be pretty flat on top no matter what I do, so I feel like it balanced things out a bit by adding a little extra on top, plus it made some really fun shapes in the wind! ;D I loved it.
Soo yes. That was my very plain hairstyle. Like a couple of others here, I had a totally make-up-free wedding so I think an overdone hairstyle would've been kind of redundant.

Oh, I am soooooo struggling with this right now. My wedding is in July 2012 and I've been searching for ideas like mad. I've found some really pretty ones, but... they require long hair. My hair probably won't even be APL by then. I had always dreamed of a half up-do with spiral curls going down my back, but that can't be made a reality for me unfortunately. Plus, I'm getting married in hot, humid weather and will likely need my hair mostly off my neck, so I'm thinking of some other ideas.

FindingBraids has some neat ideas that I *might* be able to get done, I would love two lace perimeter braids meeting in the back in some kind of pin curl low side bun and a couple twirly wisps of hair framing my face. I want some small white flowers / pearls/ sparkly things in my hair as well. Still looking for ideas. I want it elegant, but decently simple. I don't think I'll have a veil, I'm no blushing bride and I want to go into it with eyes wide open and no illusions. :P

Aww, this thread makes me want to get married. Problemo numero uno is that I'm only 19 and I think that would be a bit too young for me. Problemo numero dos is that I don't actually have a boyfriend or anything like that. :D Oh, and I think I'd go totally neurotic if I got married. I'd go WHAT IF SOMETHING REALLY BAD HAPPENED AND IT ALL MESSED UP OH NOOOOOES about every single thing including the things I wouldn't have any control over myself. :p Still, I'd really like a nice pretty marriage with a white dress and everything. I'm such a girl, lol.

Weeeell, if I got married I'd probably like to have my hair loose or at least in just a half-up or something. Problem is that my hair lacks any kind of pretty curl and it would probably just lose any curl I tried to put into it... and it would probably get all messed up during the wedding if I had it loose. BUT I allow myself my fantasies anyway. :D

I don't think I will ever get married- the average person thinks marriage includes sex, and I don't desire it in any way or form. I think I'll stay far away from relationships unless I find someone who agrees to not have sex with me.

Anyway, back on topic: I like long, flowing, curly hairstyles for weddings.. the type of hair that 'cascades' over your shoulders.

I don't think I will ever get married- the average person thinks marriage includes sex, and I don't desire it in any way or form. I think I'll stay far away from relationships unless I find someone who agrees to not have sex with me.
i don't believe that people need to get married, nor that necessarily everyone should get married to be happy. However, you may find that you can have a fulfilling emotional relationship with somebody without "sex". My spouse and i agreed when we got engaged that sex would not be an expectation or necessity. At the time, I was not interested in sex, and he knew and understood that fact. Even now I physically cannot handle much of what people expect from "sex", and we have found other ways to reinforce our romantic relationship physically. Through hugging, massage and generally cuddling, many of our desires and needs are fulfilled. Beyond that, I wish you joy. There are people out there like you. There's nothing wrong with it. Two dear friends are self described asexuals.

Here's mine. There were about 100 grips in it, and it took me ages to remove them. Oh yeah, the stylst also literally tied my hair in knots too.

On wedding hair tutorials I have seen stylists take two sections of hair and tie them in a granny knot, and continue doing so down the length, not my favorite idea for hair, to be honest.
Your hair does look nice, though. Not to mention your dress is absolutely gorgeous on you. and the choker ties in fantastically.

I am wearing my Mom's veil which is so ridiculously long I have to fold it in half to keep it manageable, so the plan is the toss it over me put my bun in the middle and wrap ribbon around it, then have a double layered veil.

My Grandmother (may she rest in peace) hand stitched the appliques on the veil and that's why I've chosen to use it. The plan looks good I just have to cement the naughty mess in a bun to the top of my head. Getting the mess to agree that it wants to be on top of my head in an organised manner is my biggest worry about the whole thing. stupid naughty mess.

I'll be the zillionth person who wore/wants loose, flowy, long curls. I'll be the first to have to say I used one single strip of extension hair to add volume (and maybe 2" of length, if that.)

This was in 2007, when I had not trimmed in nearly 4 years and the longest bits were brushing tailbone. The year before I joined LHC. I love looking at lovely wedding styles, but for me...I couldn't imagine doing it any differently than I did. It just fits me. :) http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss17/Jamichka/Hair%20Stuff/Showingoffthedressstrain.jpg

I always knew I wanted my hair really long for my wedding. But I got married a lot sooner than I'd ever anticipated, and it wasn't quite as long as I would have liked. However, I was fairly happy with the style I was able to pull off. Nothing too fancy, just curled and pinned. The pearl comb was borrowed from my sister (who I think got it from our great-grandmother).

Sorry for the gross kissy photo; 'twas the only one I could find that showcased the back of my head.

It was a simple DIY style that stayed put long into the night. So I was pleased.

I'm getting married in 2 summers time (a long wait, but saving, saving!) And it is one of the main reasons I've started to really care about my hair because I know the hair I'm growing now will be at my wedding! (my best friend laughed when I told her "THAT'S why you've stopped blow drying your hair?!" She exclaimed! She thinks I am mad, which I am!)

It's also the only thing stopping me going redheaded as like other people have said I want to look like myself on my wedding day (and definitely not be growing put colour I've got bored of!)

I want something Bohemian/hippyish similar to OP but my natural waves and half up with loose braids to keep hair out my face with tiny white flowers scattered throughout. Very natural/woodland/romantic hopefully! (hope DBF doesn't read this, I want it all to be a surprise on the day!)

There are so many pretty brides to be seen here! :)

My wedding hair, a half up (http://www.forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=2975&pictureid=37323) with fancy hair pins.
