Hi all.

I've posted before that one of the things I miss most about my longer hair was all the fun I had playing with it. I'm a hairdo addict. Anyway, one of the biggest challenges I've been having is learning how to do hairstyles all over again with shorter hair. I go into the bathroom, play with my hair, and sometimes even get something pretty! :happydance:

But then I realize I have no one to show my labors to. At least, no one who won't think I'm a wackadoodle for practicing braids during my free time. That's when I thought of LHC. :D

Anyway I wanted to start a thread where you can post your attempts at hairstyles (both successful and not), and a place to post pictures in case you're almost there, but can't quite figure it out. Maybe we can help each other decorate our pretty, growing hair!

Inaugural post?

I realized the other day that I hadn't done spirals on my curls in ages (also called doodles, I've heard). Basically, you take a curl while it's still wet (and usually drenched in conditioner or a leave-in), and wrap it around your finger. Do your whole head (or until your shoulders start to protest), and you get this:

http://i55.tinypic.com/2r6095j.jpg

This took forever when my hair was longer (I usually cheated a bit my twisting my hair instead of curling it around a cylinder). Now I can do it quick!

Also:
I'm trying to learn how to do a circle french braid. Guh. I get 3/4 of the way around and the braid is basically upside down and backwards and my fingers don't know what to do anymore. This time, I gave up and pinned the lose ends with a giant flower. I thought it was cute. (Thank god the curlies hide my lack of skill, though!)

I don't either! Someone help us!

I've been uploading the pics to tinypic and then posting them here, but it would be GREAT to just save things in my album, then share them.

Once you upload them, right click>copy image URL. sandwich that between and without the spaces.

Madora, I looked that one up (http://dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/x-o-braid/). That is some fiendish difficultness! Kudos on even trying! And you got closer than you give yourself credit for.

And I sooooo want to learn to do a lace crown braid. Gotta learn the circle french first, though. Guh.

I can do a dutch lace crown, haven't figured out the french rope on my own hair yet. I really want to learn the five strand french, but I haven't figured out what to do with my fingers and all the strands yet. Sorry, I can't post pics yet. Gonna attempt the x into o braid that was mentioned though... I've done the x on a friend, but haven't done it one my own hair yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Wow, it's like discussing crochet stitches hahaha. I've had long hair for years never knew there were so many different buns and braids. For years all I ever did was cinnamon bun (and did not know it had a name!) and the standard three strand braid, occasionally a four strand and a two strand twisted "rope" braid, I called it "Dr. Quinn." I have had lots of failed Princess Leia "Empirial Assault" braids, and not so great milk maids. Only a few pics though.

I had to "creations" (one I stole from a stranger at Walmart.) two braids, not side by side, but one on top of the other. The one I didn't steal was a "half braided braid."Make a pony tail, braid a few inches (about 6), tie it off, come down a few inches (4 to 6 inches), tie that off, braid a few more inches, tie it off, down to the end. It was just something different. No one else in that small town had enough hair to do that so it got a bit of attention.

Longhairedlady, Schweedie and Olga-Freya, thanks for your kind words.

CurlyCap, you are sweet. I adore that XO braid and will attempt it again next year. It really isn't as fiendish as it looks..just a matter of having enough hair and then braiding it properly. I'm not used to diagonal braiding!

Your curls were plumb amazing and beautiful! You must have the patience of a saint to go to all that work.

Julliams..your crown braid was exquisite! So thick! Major envy here!

And Bunzfan, your "bad" braided Nautilus looked darn good to me!

And Schweedie, kudos to you for trying the cage braid. The thing that always put me off when attempting those is that I could never get the side pieces even on both sides.

I had the very same problem! (But no beautiful curlies to make up for it :() Once it got to the point where I HAD to switch my hands around to finish braiding, everything fell apart from there.
Have you tried Dutch instead of English braiding it? That's how I finally got it. I don't know why it did the trick, but crown braids are so easy now. :D

Yep - that's how I do it and I've never had trouble with it. I think it's all about the timing of the switch as well and don't use a mirror!! I totally go by feel until I tuck the last bit in (when I do use a mirror to tell me if it's worth finishing it off).

I have just recently "cracked some kind of updo-code" and have managed a simple twisted -almost cinnabun thing (profile pic) that I am very proud of, haha. Before I could only do ponytails and half up ponytails. I am on my way now :D Thank you LHCèrs.

The attempt I posted was actually a kind of mix between the coiled one and the wrapped one - I tried to make the L-version after twisting the hair. Clearly, not a good idea. *g* I have the same problem as you describe with the regular coil method, it never looks good. The wrapped one does look kind of nice, I think, but for some reason I can't get it to look like an infinity bun at all!

I did it with wet set pin curls, dried under my fabric bonnet for 40 minutes, then let it air dry the rest of the way while I was at work (under a bandana). I styled it at home before the photographer arrived with hairpins, bobby pins, and a little flexible hold hairspray. Not a particularly hair-friendly style, but not the worst, and I just love how it looks! =)

First I twisted my whole length as shown in this video to create shape at the front, and add to the historical look of the style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVxXr_mh5BM then instead of doing braids, I did two triple coil(I think they had 4 or 5 coils due to length though) buns one on top of the other with the remaining hair. I pinned with several bobby pins, then added the comb to finish the look. This one is a very early Art Deco comb, and I :crush: it. did you notice the actual green in my hair? I love it!

I'm so happy that this thread was resurrected!

I thought I was the only hair obsessed lady in the bathroom trying new things with my hair. You ladies are so talented! So many intricate styles!

It's got me tempted to try something new...

My hair isn't even shoulder length yet but last week I could ALMOST do a Gibson Tuck ^__^

Also, I usually braid my hair like in my siggies! I also tried a crownbraid but failed, but the top looked nice!

oktobergoud I think the Gibson tuck looks nice with those little wispy bits! That crown braid does look nice, I can never get my braid to look thick on top like that :? I have to say your hair colour is amazing! It's so vibrant! :crush:

This was what my fiddling about produced

Maybe I can post too. I almost did "the spread loop bun for short hair". I guess I need more length. This looks more like a-black-hole-that's-spitting-material-bun.

Oooh - I have some of these on flickr. I'm sure I have saturated LHC with these but I guess if they are all in one place that's better anyway.

Holy wow. Those are some STUNNING updos.

oktobergoud, I love your gibson tuck! And Neneka, that is really cute. I love the sticks, too, are they acrylics?

WaitingSoLong, your updos are so pretty. Also, thank you so much for the tip about Spidermom's bun! I'd actually never tried it before, but I love it. I'm fond of wrapped buns in general, so this one is a win. :D

It comes out looking differently every time I do it so far, though!

Thank you. :) Those sticks are actually made of bamboo chop sticks and they are dyed with pure indigo.

LOL I love this description, but it really DOES look like a black-hole-that's-spitting-material: AWESOME!

I just tried out a figure 8 bun. Not hard with my APL hair! It's basically a half-flipped cinnamon bun. My hair is kinda messy here, but I still like it.

Attempted a rope crown braid. It's a bit wonky, and it's much thicker on one side than the other (anyone know how to fix this, or is it just a length issue?) but I don't think it's TOO bad for a first attempt... and it feels exciting and different and new. :D

That is a lovely first attempt, kaydana!

The uneveness might be due to:

1) you have more hair on one side of your head than the other side

2) your sectioning might have to be readjusted at the outset. It can be a little tricky apportioning each section as you work around your head. Keep practicing and you'll get there!
