I noticed that my bottle of VO5 Kiwi Lime Squeeze Clarifying Shampoo has Disodium EDTA in it. I had been under the impression that this ingredient is chelating. Does anyone know if that is true? If so, could this shampoo be used to chelate?

Thanks!

It is a chelating ingredient. However, it's most likely in there to react with hard water ions that are in the source water for the shampoo. If there is excess that is not reacted with the ingredients in the shampoo, I expect it might counteract hard water buildup a bit.

That makes sense. I was actually worried because I don't want to unnecessarily chelate my hair. I don't have very hard water and don't swim in chlorinated pools. I use the VO5 shampoo about once a month and I don't want to be stripping it too much or opening the cuticle too often.

Chelators do not strip hair or harm cuticles. They bind with metal salts and with a chelating shampoo help remove them.

Chelating shampoos contain a higher amount of chelating ingredients. EDTA is but one.
