I'd like to start trimming my own hair. How often should this be done? Mostly I've done it once a year, when my mom will pay for it, but I get split ends like crazy and would like to take a small amount off a little more often.

Well supposedly every eight weeks is good (when going to a salon) so I'm assuming is the same when doing it on your own. I usually just do S&D about once a week.

I get my mom to trim it in the back every 5 months.

You should trim when you need to either get rid of damage or even your hemline. I trim maybe twice a year, if that. Trimming too often will only take off length.

I have to trim every 3 months or so but only little bits. My hair is baby fine and damages easily.

My tip is listen to your hair, some people can go for years, some can't!

I only trim every 2 years or so, but I have extremely damage-resistant hair. Just watch for damage and for major increases in tangling (another sign of damage, though it can be a sign of buildup so clarify before you cut). Your hair will let you know when it needs a trim if you know what to look for.
