Animal Testing

I don't really want this thread to turn into a debate, I just would like it to provide information to people who would prefer their haircare and beauty products not to be tested on animals. (I don't want to include Drug or Medication testing, thats a whole 'nuther kettle of fish)

Worth reading the RSPCA paper (http://www.rspca.org.uk/ImageLocator/LocateAsset?asset=document&assetId=1232711398791&mode=prd)on this one - it shows you what is defined as 'cruelty free'

I would never want to support PETA (and some other organisations), but I only use non-animal-tested products. But that's developed out of different reasons that what such organisations want to claim... but well, that's wuite the same why I couldn't get a pet from the local animal shelter.

One thing to note is that if a product says "Final product not tested on animals" that means that some ingredients were INDIVIDUALLY tested on animals. So be careful of the phrasing.

I recently found out what animal testing really means - the products are not just put on the animals, like what I thought. It is actually FORCE FED to them! That really freaked me out! :scared:

Hey Stormvixen great thread idea. LisaMonster started a really good thread about cruelty free hair products (a good reminder for me to bump it up) here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=71384&highlight=animal+testing). One of the things I mentioned was to look for the cruelty-free leaping bunny logo on your products:

The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.

I have been meaning to do a thread about this for a while but was too shy. I didn't want to upset people by telling them that their favourite product might be tested on baby bunnies.
I am however aware of the guilty companies and am careful about what I buy, but I'm so glad you made this thread :)

Thanks for the lists! I never understood animal testing. Eating the animals is one thing, tormenting the poor guys is another. Though now we do a pretty good job tormenting the food animals, which is why I'm trying to go vegetarian. Uhg.

In the UK Naked Body Care is awesome - all cruelty free and mostly vegan; some have honey & buttermilk. They have a massive range, I'd highly recommend.

Its good to see a lot of people concerned about this, I didnt realise there had already been a thread (I guess I shoulda searche "crulty free" as well as "animal testing" before starting a new thread :))

I must admit im a bit of hypocrite, and I started this thread as a reminder to myself as well as others... I sometimes forget to check if a product is crulty free if it seems like a bargain...

I used to LOVE the NAked products but they don't seem to work for me as CO wash...

Animal Testing is more than just testing the products/ingredients on the animals, it is also how they are treated by the animal "care" technitions... I was offered a job in a lab when I finished doing an Animal Management course at college, needless to say I didnt accept, sometimes I think I should have taken it though, I dont think I could've coped with seeing the suffering but I might have been able to make things just a little bit better for the little guys.

StormVixen you did the right thing in refusing that job. If nobody works for them then the suffering stops (if only more people would say no) and I highly doubt you could have helped them and you most definitely would have suffered emotionally yourself. Best to be proactive with your money and voice. :blossom:

Thanks for this thread. For myself I always find new things to be aware of that I might not have considered for eg. Arm and Hammer I never even think about my bicarb ?!? (It's not Arm and Hammer but still . . .)
