Have any of you chosen a costume that involved a really elaborate hair-do, or hair was a central part of the costume and were able to do it without a wig or extensions or the like? Anybody growing it out partly because they want to be able to do a certain costume?

I was able to do a really elaborate Marie Antoinette hairstyle and I went as her--post guillotine this past Halloween. It was awesome, I was so glad to not have to use a wig, even though my hair did not like the white spray paint.

What were your costumes?

Yup, that description fits me! I realized that after all these years I've never been rapunzel for halloween, mostly because any tower someone would be able to climb with my hair I'd be able to step out of myself. so I did a to-scale version of Rapunzel in her tower and voila:

I was inspired by the Marie Antoinette and found this youtube video. There is much back-combing and heat styling but just look at the volume she gets with shoulder length hair!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Er1dVbFn_M&feature=related

Lunnafindel, that is so cool! I dressed up as Dr. Julia from Horrible Bosses, so for that I straightened my hair (I so rarely do that I forgot where my hot tools were!) and attached clip-on bangs (pics in profile).

I went as Kaylee from Firefly, which involved curling my hair to make it shorter and changing the part to the center. Got a few hair comments, mostly: "shiny!" haha. Very fun.

I went as a cracked porcelain doll (thanks to another halloween thread for the inspiration.) and i put my hair in 2 pigtails, turned into messy "buns" with 2 curls down the front, kinda like an anime character. and then put a bowler hat. :D http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/385560_2505523008252_1558321026_2635983_1692121773 _n.jpg I know, it's sideways...

When I was a kid I dressed up as Punky Brewster (why does saying this make me feel old??) and my dad put a wire through my braids so they stuck out horizontally above my shoulders. I got a lot of laughs from the neighbours when I went trick-or-treating.

I was the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who, female version. I even had the sonic screwdriver. My hair was down and the bangs were like Matt Smith's and topped off with a fez.

I went as a cybergoth, which is definitely hair centric but false hair. My real hair is about the same length as the wig. I made the wig myself, so much work and so worth it! I was worried that it would be too heavy and pull my hair out or damage my scalp as I wore it for 3 days for a music festival halloween weekend (Moogfest!) but the way I secured it was very comfortable and my scalp wasn't very sore and I definitely took note of hair loss and it was along the normal amount.

There is one hair fall on each side. To attach this, I made two cat-ear buns, each secured with two tiny claw clips. Then I wrapped a sock around each bun, and attached the wig piece with scrunchies. Once the wig was firmly scrunchied on to the bun, I took two locks of yarn from one side, and wrapped it firmly around the bun on the other side. This secured it so the buns were pulled evenly from both sides, rather than just -down- from one side. This step was definitely key for comfort.

You can't see in the flash photos, but there are glowing things tied in with the wig, and the gas mask is a rainbow strobe light. The whole costume was lit up.
