Oil, conditioner, shampoo, leave ins or smoothing creams. Just sun-in every 3 months.
Does anyone else do this?

Do you use just water to wash it?
No, I don't do this, but I think it's very interesting.

I am the same apart from the sun-in! I used to use oils and stuff even on WO but now I never use anything at all but cold water. If I had some really fancy thing to go to, I might go the extra mile, but most of the time my hair is fine just the way it is.

You probably can. It takes quite a while to fully transition though.

but I love all that stuff, the smell of shampoo, the creamy leave-in, all that makes fun to me, so I don´t want to miss it. But your way maybe is more healthy for the hair? and of course less expensive!

I do miss the smell and process of S/C and all that sometimes. For me it is the only drawback of WO.

No, my hair couldn't stand not being washed sometime! Healthy hair also relies on a healthy scalp, and a healthy scalp needs to be cleaned at some point.

Perfume solves the fragrance issue.
WO is much cheaper. I used to be a product junkie until I found this site.
When I used shampoo and conditioner I started to develop scalp conditions and my hair was falling out.
My hair is now weather proof, always looks like it has product in it and has stopped falling out. Another perk is no more scalp conditions like dandruff.

Scalp is washed with water and finger tips.

The scalp is being cleaned, though. With water.
Just because one doesn't use soap/shampoo/detergent doesn't mean that their scalp isn't clean.
The skin, including the scalp, is a self-cleaning organ which fights nasties with the acid-mantle. I think it is evidenced by the many many people on this site who have not used anything but water for years that healthy hair is not necessarily dependent on shampoo.

I remember years back seeing a program which followed women who tried the WO method. I always thought hair needing washing but was really surprised at how thick and bouncy their hair looked after the 12 week experiment. If my memory serves me right it took about 6 weeks to adjust and their hair looked pretty scanky before that, but then wow! lovely hair. Wish I had the patience to try but I admire anybody with the patience to try this.

I wish I could do this. My hair and scalp are so dry and damaged at this point that I need products to make it cooperate.

I would try but it sounds like people experience darkening, which is probably why you use the Sun In every few months, but still... maybe I'd try it during the summer months. If I took a 12 week vacation where no one I knew would see me during the crazy hair stage. :D

No.. I use a lot of leave ins, oils and such.. I am trying to slowly cut down on products though, espessially the amount of conditioner when I CO. I hope in time to have a less greasy scalp and be able to "WO-light". How long did it take you to transition?

About 6 weeks, which is the norm. When my hair is especially oily I wipe my hair with a wash cloth.
They say the definition of insanity is doing something the same way over and over expecting a different result.
So using products or more products over and over expecting your conditions to change is the above vocabulary word LOL!

I only use a little bit of coconut oil on the days I W/O wash. I used to need a leave in and mouse because my hair was so dry from shampooing or even just conditioning.
I have been doing Cassia but I'm not sure if I'll continue because it dries out my hair a lot.

My family would think I am insane if I did this. I think that I am crazy enough doing CO. I might try this once my oil production has gone down. I have not been on CO long enough yet to get those results.

I saw a program on this very thing where they took photos of a group of peoples' scalps before they started and then went for 12 weeks WO and took photos at the end. The people were all instructed to wash only with water and fingertips for a full 12 weeks. At the end, some reported that their hair went through a bad stage but went better, some said it was just horrible, however, the photos of all the people showed that they had very high levels of fungus on their scalps - even those who thought their hair was better.
I personally think that water can only remove so much. You can't just wash off tinea (athletes' foot) if you have it on your feet, you have to use an alternative to get rid of it. I'm just not convinced that the scalp could be totally clean using water only.
I have also seen how my son can have a shower, not use soap (as some little boys do), and still stink because the water has not removed the bacteria that is under his arms or fully removed the dirt from his knees even though he tells me he did wash there.
I personally can suffer from fungal issues if my body goes out of whack so I don't think this is for me.
If it works for you, (and it seems to) that is wonderful and you are most likely doing your hair a favour.
Isn't Sun-in a bleach? I think I used to use something like that when I was younger. You sprayed it in, then used a blow drier on it and your hair would be one shade lighter?

It took me about 6 weeks to not FEEL like my hair was greasy or waxy...though it looked OK for most of that time. However; it took me several months to finally feel totally normal/comfortable with my hair and not use any products whatsoever.

This is interesting...I am glad you shared. I have been WO since February on my hair, and much longer on my body. My skin definitely has far fewer issues with WO (less smell, less dryness, etc), but I have noticed that my scalp can be a bit flakey sometimes. I think that I will try using something like ACV every so often now, which is purported to be anti-fungal, and see if that issue clears up.

Sun-in is and I use a flat iron with it.
My hair doesn't stink. My mom says it smells like it did when I was a baby. Which in my opinion is a good thing.
With WO you do have to be more thorough. You can't just run your fingers through your hair.
I use a wash cloth. I first us my hands to massage my scalp then use the wash cloth to wipe the oil off of my hands and repeat till my hair is clean.
I also use a BBB to clean my hair it does a great job.

I wouldn't go into the regimen lightly. It takes more work than you might think.
Maybe I will write a tutorial to maximize success and effectiveness.

Sounds like you have a great routine that works for you. Very lucky. I hope you didn't think I was suggesting your hair stinks - I wasn't. My 10 year old son's armpits? Yes, they stink - lol!

It was one of those really annoying programs where they have about 4 stories that they run and you see bits and pieces of each all the way through. I think it was from Australia but it could have been from the UK. Can't remember the name of it sorry and it didn't last long. It was one of those body shows with lots of different topics each week.

I agree. Might be good for hair (dead cells), but might not be so good for the scalp. Would be interesting to take a culture of some of these scalps.
Water only will not get the rest of the skin as clean either.
There are many reasons humans live much longer today than in the past. Hygiene is an important factor.

So WOers (on hair or skin) are being called dirty and unhygienic again?
It's been a long time since I read such a judgmental post.

Good for you :) I would miss the feeling of combing conditioner through my hair and how clean and fresh my hair feels after a shampoo, but everyone is different :)
Has your growth rate changed now that you're WO?

Please, MissPurdy, a tutorial would be very interesting to anyone looking for healthy hair.
Personally, I would find a culture a great resource, not an incriminating process. It would prove one way or the other how shampooing kills the beneficial organisms in the scalp, like antibiotics destroys friendly intestinal flora.
I saw a show recently about folks with MS being in remission because doctors populated their digestive systems with worms! Gross, I know, but given the choice between a parasite that causes no other symptoms and MS, give me the parasite.

No growth rate change. The circulation to my scalp is high and constant. Except when I'm sick.
I do have new growth though.

That would be true if I ate with my hands that I didn't wash after slopping the pigs.
If you took a culture of my scalp as you so rudely suggested it would be full of healthy and normal flora.
