View Full Version : Failed Experiments You Wish Worked

Most of us have tried a slew of experiments to get to what works best for our own hair, some of us are still searching. In all of that, there have been many things that resulted in epic fails.
So just for a little bit of light-hearted fun, which hair experiments have YOU tried and failed at that your really wish had worked?
My own was cones and every now & then I'll try my hardest to get them to work I always have to go cone-free. More specifically, I REALLY REALLY wish that the So Sexy shampoo & Conditioner by Victoria's Secret worked long term for me. The smell is just heaven for me & it lasts into a second & even third day for me. After I wash my hair with it & I want nothing more than to nuzzle my hair day & night. I actually found out about the stuff from a former coworker. She had absolutely stunning hip length hair & when I asked her what she used that was it. Unfortunately for me, after a week or two, no amount of clarifying was able to end buildup that effected both my scalp & ended up leaving my hair limp & sticky.
Anyone else care to share?

Baking soda/ACV : these were not good at all for me. Caused lots of tangles and shedding. I wish the oils worked better for me but my hair is fine textured and they weight it down. Now, I just use oils on the ends at bedtime after I do my braid. I tried to go cone free but my length demands it!
SLS free shampoo is working well, tried Doc Bronners and got a bunch of tangles and shedding in addition to breaking out my skin.
But, I was almost waist length when I started all these alternatives which didn't work. So, many time off the shelf products are good for every day and I will only occasionally use the new products I've learned about here.

I wish that castor oil had given me super-fast-growing, super-thick hair.. instead, I got a couple of scalp pimples. :P

An avocado treatment made from a gorgeous ripe avocado and olive oil for my daughter and I resulted in us both having dry tangly hair that felt absolutely awful. We both needed several moisture treatments after that to get our hair back to normal. I will never attempt to do that again!!

I've failed miserably at a lot of experiments involving setting my hair(to make it curly), but that's okay; I know quite a few ways that don't work now!

Shea butter.... Horrible experience...
ACV.... made my hair OK.... but not great. I went back to s/c and my hair feels so much better now! I tried ACV for 3 months...
CO only- Too much buildup.
Oiling- just did not work for me. Too much buildup again.

Shampoo bars: great the first few times but after using them for a while, I got a waxy buildup (even with vinegar rinses, miracle water, CA, ...) that made my hair super tangly. During the period when I was trying to get rid of the buildup, I considered shampoo bars the worst thing I'd ever done to my hair.

WO- I love the idea of it, but my hair does not. However, the 8 or so weeks I spent doing WO taught me that my hair liked infrequent washing, and that my scalp also produced less oil if washed less.
EVOO- anything involving EVOO takes at least a fortnight of washing to be removed...

Ha! Such an appropriate thread for me today! I followed a recipe for a hair treatment that called for 1/2 cup of coconut milk, two mashed bananas and a Tbs of honey, all blended thoroughly. It smelled great, felt great in my hair, rinsed out feeling full and smooth and silky (if possible), and then it happened...I discovered that my AMPLE rinsing still left little tiny bits of banana in my hair that dried into glue! My hair was basically glued together all over in little bitty clumps. Brushing it out was even worse, and I didn't have time to take another shower before I had to leave the house. Tonight, I still have little banana specks throughout my head, and I think it may have even caused a little breakage on the crown. Grrr... So much for a conditioning treatment.:(

Oh my..where do I start...
ACV
Shampoo Bars
Egg Washes
SMT
CO
Some of my scalp washing techniques (others worked great)
Borax washing
Citric Acid
That Indian herb that starts with a B to make your hair grow
Monostat :(
The other horsey thing to make your hair grow
Indigo
BBB
Oil on my scalp
Diluted dish detergent
Some crazy hair toy accessories
Sleep cap
Thats all I can think of at the moment. I still havent given up totally on Indian herbs and Baking Soda. I still give them another try now and then.

The Wen haircare regime. It worked GREAT at first, but after a couple months my hair was always limp and dirty looking, no matter how often I washed it. Such a shame as I LOVED the way the sweet almond mint smelled. I totally bought into the whole 'Wen will change your hair' theory, as I wasn't familiar with CO washing at the time. And they enroll you in an automatic shipment every couple months, which they didn't tell you on the website (or if they did I didn't notice it). Spent all that money on a fancy conditioner when I could've bought a cone-free all natural one from a local organic market for waaaay cheaper. :( I ended up giving 3 leftover bottles away in the end as I moved onto the 'no poo method'. Now I use poo bars. ^_^

I reeeeeallly wanted the oil shampoo to work for me. It was pretty great the first couple times, but it was one disaster after another after that. Oh, it would have been so easy and so low-maintenance had it worked!
The avocado treatment was another disaster, and a messy one at that. Some things are just meant to go in my stomach rather than on my head.
Cassia.... jury is still out. I love what it does to my hair - it's smoother, shiny, and feels stronger. But apparently I'm one of the "lucky" few lighter-haired folks who get a LOT of color from cassia, no matter what I do. My hair is actually darker because of it. :( I'm not sure if I'll keep doing it for this reason.

CO didn't work on my greasy scalp. I tried it before joining LHC. It makes my length gorgeous.
Lush's trichomania shampoo bar. That smells so heavenly, but it made my hair so dried out and filmy.
Coconut oil. I really love the smell, but it makes my hair greasy and crunchy on the ends.

Hm, I tried to use cinnamon to lighten on my dyed ends once, and it burned the living daylights out of my scalp and facial skin. Plus, it was a real pain to wash out. :/ My advice is to never use ground cinnamon in your hair; only cinnamon extract.

CO (greasy hair)
Shampoo Bars (hair smelled like vinegar, too much trouble)
Dr. Bronner's (hair smelled like vinegar, inconsistent results)
SMT (gunk)
Henna (didn't really show up and it was really messy)
Various styling products (just made the frizz sticky)
Curly Girl method (too much work for unkempt looking waves)
Cassia (might try it again, didn't notice any difference and it was really messy)

Many things, I guess, but sometimes I was also relieved it didn't work (like ACV or Monistat, awful smells!)
But on-topic:
- Rooibos sprays, made my hair really dry
- Aussie 3 MM, heard so many great things about it but it hardly did anything for my hair...
- SMT's, my hair hates it
- Honey, my hair haaaaates it (same goes for advocado!)
- Lush shampoos
- CO-washing, makes my hair really dirty and dry at the same time o_O

henna - I wanted red! And my hair is a very, very light brown! But I got brown...still, in the end I have decided to go natural, which can only be a good thing.
All the stuff you're supposed to do to make hair curl - scrunching, gel, no combing wet, plopping etc. My hair just feels weird/crunchy/tangly if I do this.
It curls just fine if I CO wash, gently comb wet, then add panacea salve leave-in.

Shampoo bars and my hair just don't get along, as much as I wish they did.
I also want to like ACV so much, but it doesn't seem to do anything good for my hair, it seems to make it frizzy, and I cannot stand the smell, which lingers in my hair.
Castor oil gives me raging scalp pimples, such a shame.

Water only. I stuck it out for five and a half months, thinking/hoping it was just a really long transition period, but it just wasn't working, and I looked awful. Maybe on an older scalp that isn't throwing out so much oil (I was 19 when I tried it), so perhaps it'll be worth another look in a few years. It would've saved me so much money!

Stretching my washes. Total and absolute FAIL.
My scalp is simply a natural oil factory, and I have come to accept that. I simply CAN'T go longer than 2 days without washing my hair. The worst was the week I spent about a year ago when I toughed it out for 4 days. By the end of that fourth day, I looked like I had poured Crisco all over my head, my scalp itched like crazy that I was scratching it all the way until I ran into the shower to wash out the disgusting greasefest that was on my head.

Coconut oil - goes crunchy as it dries, if I put a lot on it doesn't come out and makes my hair greasy and limp. If I put a small or medium amount on it doesn't do any good.

It's funny how looking at other people's failed hair care experiments makes you realize how unique each one of us truly is. As much as we'd love it, there really is no 'cure all' that does it for everyone.
I've also tried stretching washes to end up looking just gross.
CO was a wonderful thought especially with so many delicious smelling Suave Naturals scents I adore but it was just one step down from not washing & again, I couldn't make it through the adjustment period.
Shampoo bars are so darned alluring & heavens know that I've tried numerous kinds from a variety of suppliers over the years but it's always managed to leave my hair too stripped for my liking.
Thanks all for sharing! Hope everyone has been having better luck.

I wish dying my hair black with henna and indigo had worked.
After 5 crazy expensive and messy applications I've given up and gone back to chemical dye.
Also castor oil for growth.... It may make my hair grow faster but it won't bloody wash out!!! Horrid stuff.

Washing with bean flours. Worked great at first but built up too quickly and smelled 'beany'.
Also washing with fenugreek.
My last experiment disaster was using ghee as a pre-poo. I oiled my scalp and my hair with warm ghee and didn't even heavy oil. It sunk in beautifully and my hair was so soft! I could tell it loved it.... but after 3 washes it still stank like vomit... I finally ended up doing a bentonite clay pack and then washing again! Never again!
Same thing with yogurt.

CO washing (might work better once I've finished slowly weaning my hair off cones. It was a true cone-junkie, and sudden no-cone CO didn't work as it was such a major change.)
Oil. Any kind. Especially coconut and olive. It refuses to wash out. Not with water, not with condish, not with diluted shampoo. I need to use a clarifying shampoo, then my usual one undiluted before I can get it out. The I need to give my hair a massive moisture treatment just to get my hair nice again

I just started trying out a product called Viviscal . I ordered the supplements, shampoo, and conditioner. I know, it sounds REALLY dumb haha. Ive read great reviews on it and i figure to give it a try. the shampoo hasnt come in yet. i tried the conditioner lastnight and hated it. its a protein conditioner so im thinking of just using it as a deep conditioning treatment maybe every week and possibly mixing it with something else. Other than that ive been taking the supplements which is 2 a day. im not expecting my hair to grow overnight or immediate results.

CO, my scalp just can't handle it, SLS free shampoo ditto.

Great idea for a thread :D
Things that don't work that well with my hair: oil shampoo - it just didn't work. Shampoo and conditioner for too long makes my hair dry and my scalp gets oily too fast.
Cones mostly do more harm than good for me.
CO washing for too long gives me build up.
Shampoo bars just makes my hair awful, dry and tangly.
Total disasters: coconut milk - oh gowd... it took days and many washes to get it out of my hair :p, honey lightening with olive oil and honey - same as above (I did this during my first weeks on LHC, total newb).
Oils overall in the beginning were disastrous, but I was stubborn and stuck with them. Today I can use quite a lot of oils without problems :)

Hair wonders: ginseng scalp liquid, drinking combucha tea

I can't wash my hair with SLS-free shampoo... otherwise it gets absolutely nasty and limp and GREASY! ): I just got a new shampoo that's light on SLS and I hate the transitioning period!
I also put coconut oil on my hair for too long and it took three.washes. to rinse out. This was when I had red hair and my friend and I were huddled over her bathtub (by then I was an emotional wreck because her cosmetologist sister had said if it didn't come out we should use DISH SOAP.) and I was just praying I would still have red hair when she was done!

*CO (it made my scalp so dirty looking)
*avocado treatment (made my hair bad fluffy, and I was brushing out avocado bits forever)
*grape-seed oil (made my hair extremely oily, but still dry. I guess it didn't absorb?)
*V05 conditioners (gave me awful build up that ACV and Pert had a hard time getting rid of)
*rooibos tea rinses/sprays/leave in (made my hair dry and crunchy)
Guess I'll stick to basic shampoo and conditioner, although I have been able to go SLS and cone free and have nice results, so there's one conquest for me.

A girl I talk to uses roobios to make her naturally red hair stand out more in the sun. I also tried rooibos tea in my hair a couple of days ago; hoping that my hair would be redder. But, nothing changed. Not even the texture. I guess some people just have better results with that stuff than others. :/ I'll just stick to Henna I guess.

* Co washing - Made my hair limp, more greasy and I shed a lot... It was scary
* Coconut oil deep conditioning mask on the scalp - I now put it only from ears down before going to sleep (although I didn't do it for a long time now). Also big sheddings because of it.
* Coconut oil as leave in - Makes my hair very crunchy. Thank god for finding Jojoba!
* Cones, SLS, conventional and expensive salon shampoos and conditioners - My hair is better without them! (that is not too bad though! ;))
* Normal brushes - I use a wooden comb and a tangle teaser now, but this is too bad because I can't find a portable non damaging brush for in my purse because almost every brush has those steel pins with the knobs..
* Velcro rollers - I ripped the velcro of of them and bought some clips to hold them in my hair, Love it!
* Blow dryer and flat iron - Used them almost every day.. flat iron I last used in april or something, Blow dryer last used in August? (also, not a bad thing, haha, but would have liked that they were not damaging though). Find my hair much less frizzy now its used to no heat (yeay!)

CO with V05 Pomegranate and Grapeseed - leaves a greasy film on my scalp

SLS, ALS, etc...I love the cleansing power but my hair started falling out badly from years of use.
My flat iron- I haven't used that in a couple of years or my blow dryer. I miss them sometimes but my hair is on the road to recovery and I don't want to mess it up.

Sock bun curls utterly failed for me. I was so excited to have finally found an easy, quick method of curling my hair, and was hoping for wonderful results like Loepsie's video on Youtube. I ended up with a frizzy, awkwardly kinked and poofy mass of hair.

CO, WO, NW, left me with an itchy, flaky scalp and hair that felt so thick and coated in wax that I couldn't stand it. My ends looked great, but the feel was terrible.

so many things don't work for me - i'm still trying to fnd out what does!
recently it's CO washing - felt very good the day i washed - next day was like gunk.
i read about CO washing first time in this forum & was very excited! at last i thought something to wash the oil without stripping - & i followed all the instructions to a T! But it made my hair into an awful gunky mess with so much build up - it was not funny! & all the shedding as well! as it is i have hair-fall problem. i tried it twice - second time was worse. the conditioner coats the hair making it feel greasy, crunchy, dead! & making it fall. & because there is so much of handling i let the hair stay that way for 3 days before washing it out & it's still the same!
every time i tell myself to stick to simple basic methods & avoid the exotic!
if my shampoo is not too harsh & has SLES - it works fine for me.
same with conditioners - not too much stuff - 1 or 2 cones is fine.
olive oil & egg yolks as pre-conditioning works - once in two weeks or so
honey doesn't work for me - neither does ACV - have never tried BS - now i don't want to either. i'd rather give myself a good shampoo wash - twice - with extra shampoo.
i'm still sitting with gunky hair in a plait to work.- i plan to give myself an olive oil egg yolk treatmeant & see if it improves my hair.
any suggestions to get the CO build up out - apart from BS?

Shampoo bars. I've tried everything, but at home my water is just too hard - and at uni although the water is soft, my hair just hates them. They never wash out nicely, no matter how much or little ACV I use. My scalp itches and my hair feels stiff and waxy, then sticky and oily.
I have discovered Naked shampoo and conditioner - it's a UK product without SLS, SLES, 'cones, parabens or other chemical mess, but it isn't soap either. I'm still holding my breath but, after the first use, my childishly fine hair is soft, shiny, satin-smooth and light.

Every sls free shampoo I have tried. I have no idea what it is but they all (and yes there have been many) have brought my scalp out in dandruff, sore lumps and hives.
Many sls shampoos also do this too. :(
I have ridiculously sensitive skin. I won't even go into details what benzoyl peroxide did to my skin after the first use. Just rest assure I looked like I'd been seriously burnt.

A mayonnaise deep treatment....ick. It took me days to get the oil out and it didn't do anything. :(

Garlic... I used it ONCE and it took SEVEN MONTHS for the smell to fade.

Garlic... I used it ONCE and it took SEVEN MONTHS for the smell to fade.I'm sorry, I laughed :o I'm glad to hear it finally did fade!
For me:
Oiling. No matter the amount or type, when it goes on dry hair it ends up making my hair feel like straw.
CO and No-poo. Leaves me with a flaky scalp and makes all my new-growth hairs stand up in a curly halo riot.

I have exactly the same thing! Just started experimenting with them again and now officially giving up, I hate the waxyness and itchiness and hey my hair is doing great with SLS so I will continue to use it....

SMT - totally freaked my hair out. Aloe is my anti-hair.
And I bought a gallon of aloe juice and two tubes of aloe gel on top of it.

So far my two major fails have been CO (my hair shed like crazy) and pretty much all cold sets as they cause massive amounts of frizzing. Ah well. lol I can't wait to discover more failures. ;)

Water only, Conditioner only, shampoo only, castile soaps, herbs, vinegars, stretching washes, and oils (make my skin break out).

I wish that WO & stretching washes would be easier. It would be hard to give up all those products, but if I would have healthy hair without them it would be so nice. Also stretching washes, I should try it on some time period that I wouldn't really be going anywhere. I don't want to show up somewhere and have filthy hair.

SMT's --I get better results just leaving in some condish for awhile
Stretching washes--but its getting colder, so I'm going to try it again, ever hopeful
plopping, gel, anything to make it curlier
oil shampoo
going SLS free
