View Full Version : Show me your beribboned hair!!

I don't know if there's already a thread about this, but anyway, I love putting ribbons in my hair, especially bright green ones! :) It's such a Celtic-y way to style one's hair ;).
I know there are quite a few awesome 'ribbon-braiders' here in LHC, so how about sharing our beribboned hairstyles? I haven't got the knack of ribbon-braiding yet, I think, as I still find inserting the ribbons at the beginning quite a difficult task , but I would really like to learn to do it properly, so please, do share your tips along with the pictures!!

I've been searching for pics of my hair with ribbons...Here are a few to begin this thread with:

I'm still quite wasted at inserting the ribbons without the general effect looking a bit slapdash, so when I wear ribbons, the chosen hairstyle is usually an updo, like this one (braided Chinese bun):

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6215/6295433570_19f4c17ed9.jpg

I really like the effect of a beribboned braid, but, as I said before, I don't really know how to secure the ribbon without it showing in a, to me, unattractive way...

I think ribbons with braided hair are a very Celtic hairstyle (Elvish too!) :D

Those are so pretty! I love the green ribbon in your hair.

I wear ribbons occasionally to tie my hair off but haven't tried braiding them in very much. I'd love to see more pictures of people who have.

Your green ribbon is great! I really like the buns with the incorporated ribbons, too. :)

I can't seem to locate the photos I've taken with my hair in a red ribbon, but the braid definitely wasn't as pretty because I couldn't get the strands to consistently show the ribbon, plus I think my ribbon is a bit thinner than the one you're using. What I do to start braids is fold the ribbon in half, put it up against the base of my head wherever the braid will start, and then put each ribbon half into one of the braid strands, then braid down.

My braid looks about the same as yours, except my hair is a lot shorter, but rather than ending with a knot, I cut the ribbon length so that I have enough to tie a bow at the end (double-knotted, otherwise it comes undone).

Sorry I don't have pics! Your hair looks great with ribbons, though, and I like your LoTR theme going on, too. :)

Wow, that's so cool!
I feel like it wouldn't look nearly so good in my lighter coloured hair. Hm..
Though you said you have troubles inserting it in the beginning, I'd love to know how you do start off a braid with a ribbon. And do you use the ribbon as one of the three parts, or combined with one of the three parts? :flower:

From what I remember...

I only had my hair braided with a ribbon when I was young, so I don't know that much about it, but what my mom did was use a long ribbon, fold it in half, then tie it round (behind) the ponytail elastic, tying it in two knots (bottom of ponytail), and then she braided the doubled up ribbon through (in with the middle strand).

Quixii, To get ribbon-braids to look really nice in light hair, you just need a ribbon that contrasts nicely. I think a forest green or royal blue might look nice in your hair.

I used to have ribbons braided into my hair as a child. I had light brown/dark blonde hair back then, and I think we usually used relatively bright colors, as I was a little girl.

BTW, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't use the word lame to speak about things you don't like. Lame refers to an altered gait or a limp, which would be how I walk because of my disability. When you use the word lame to refer to bad things, you imply that having a different-looking gait is bad. There are a great many of us who don't walk 'normally' who don't appreciate the implication. Thanks.

I'm SO sorry, BlazingHeart, I can assure you that I didn't mean that with my use of the word, but you're completely right, it's a very thoughtless and ugly word to use (I hardly ever use it, but still) :(. I would feel rightfully angered too. I have altered the expression straightaway. Sometimes we use words figuratively, without thinking about the original meaning, when we shouldn't.

I have a couple of ribbon-hair pictures in my "tames the web" album. I'm sorry, I don't know how to share a picture from my album other than going to my album. Feel free to go there; it's public.

I think if you look up "lame" in the dictionary, you will find more than one definition.

I've just tried this, and the ribbon didn't slip out of the braid as I had feared it would! (Before trying it I was thinking 'But won't the folded up part show a lot at the start of the braid?' too :p). Only problem was, when I looked at the whole braid, I noticed that the ribbon wasn't showing from the beginning of the braid to the iddle of the length (I mean, it showed if I flipped the braid ). I need more practice, there's no denying :D.

Actually, I think that bright green ribbons (or blue, or red,...) would look great against your hair-colour! :)

If I'm wearing a ponytail and want to braid it plus add a ribbon, I roll the ribbon around the elastic and secure it there before braiding (I use the ribbon combined with the left and right parts). The problem comes when I want to braid without a ponytail. The pics I posted with the braid involved a former half-up with a small elastic, around which I had tied the ribbon. I then proceded with a standart three-strand braid, adding the ribbon. The final result at the top of my head wasn't one I particularly liked, I had a bit of ribbon trailing from the small elastic to the beginning of the braid (that's why I cropped that part from the first pic :o, you can still see how it looked like in the second to last pic).

LOVE the ribbon pictures. I do it alot actually. Most of the time I use a thin brown one to match my hair and tie off my braids with the ribbon instead of using ties because my ends are so thin at the bottom.

I have also used the contrasting ones and done a chinese bun also or a french braid and tie it off and then put it in a braided bun.

I also do alot of hair taping with them. Either braids across the top or a fake crown braid. I wore it taped like this at the beach this summer every day we were there.

Sorry I dont have pictures. I will have to work on that!

I wear ribbons all the time, I have loads of pics too. I'll try and sort some out but I'm sure if you've searched the forums you will have come across a few.
The way I normally do it is: I have a ribbon that is twice the length of the ponytail, I put an elastic in my hair to make a ponytail then thread the ribbon through the elastic so I have 2 equal lengths hanging down. I then use the 2 halves of ribbon together as 1 of the braid strands, then secure the end with another elastic. If I have enough ribbon left over at the end I'll tie it in a bow too. (Hope that makes sense)
These are the best picture I have to hand at the moment. (I'll dig out some more)

TheStorm, I love how your braid looks with the ribbon acting as one of the braid strands. I have never tried that, so I'm giving it a go! :)

I love putting ribbons in my hair! So pretty! The only thing I do differently from everyone else, is when braiding, I start the ribbon out on two strands that are next to each other (two to the left/right), so that when you start braiding the ribbons are on either side, versus having them be next to each other as the braid progresses. Does that make any sense?

Example (Mine):
Strand (ST) 1, hair
ST2, Ribbon
ST3 Ribbon

This does work but it's better if you use something a bit bigger, e.g. a narrow scarf, to give you enough bulk.

As for your original question, SwordWomanRiona, how about this: fold the ribbon in half. Slide the fold of the ribbon over the upper prong of a bobby pin. Pin the bobby pin deep in your hair, somewhere where it is central to the starting position of the plait but nice and hidden. Put one ribbon end in one section of the plait and the other in another section. Plait. Tie off the plait however you like (with the ribbon, with a band, etc.).

Thanks, Panth :). I have tried folding the ribbon and braiding twice now, and it has worked surprisingly well, only the ribbon isn't still showing as uniformly as I would like. The bobby pin suggestion is worth a try, though!

Getting the ribbon to show more uniformly can be done a few ways. One is making the ribbon to hair ratio higher (using thinner sections of hair or wider ribbon or more ribbon strands). Another is to spread the ribbon out and wrap it around the section of hair. You can also try to set the ribbon at the top of the section each pass, which is tricky at first but not so bad with practice.

Riona, thanks for your response to my earlier post.

I think satin ribbons would be sufficient - they would be slippery enough and sleek enough not to damage.

As for where you can get real silk ribbons, well, they're quite difficult to get hold of. It's quite a quest in historic costuming circles to find them (we want 100% silk for authenticity purposes). One of the few places you can get them is at Hedgehog Handworks (http://www.hedgehoghandworks.com/catalog/index.php). Another is at WM Booth Draper (http://www.wmboothdraper.com/) (under 'Tape & Lace').

I braided two french braids with three ribbons each (folded in half). They were very long ribbons that went way past the ends of my hair. I braided them to the ends. Then I just kind of looped the hair up and wrapped the end of the ribbon braids around the whole thing.

I braided two french braids with three ribbons each (folded in half). They were very long ribbons that went way past the ends of my hair. I braided them to the ends. Then I just kind of looped the hair up and wrapped the end of the ribbon braids around the whole thing.

Thanks, Merewen, I'll be trying that! :)

Wow, everyone has such lovely beribboned hairstyles!

Here are the only photos I could find of ribbons in my hair:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3067&pictureid=118407

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4269&pictureid=55186

Both of those were from 2009. The pink ribbon was satin, the other ribbon was silk (I ordered the silk one online, I couldn't find silk in stores).

Today I went out and bought a bunch of new satin ribbon, and I'll be trying out ribbon braiding next. :)

To tell the truth, I'm still working on that ;)! Try to make sure that the ribbon is visible in the 'outer-side' of the braid by repositioning it while you braid. That's still rather tricky for me, today I got a strange-looking beribboned braid, in which the ribbon showed in the lower-half, but didn't in the upper (in the upper half, it showed on the other side!).
I see that you have iii hair, so maybe you could go for broader ribbons if your hair thickness doesn't make the ribbon visible enough (Ah, I would like to have that problem myself! :)).
Hope that helps a bit :).

Last week, I tried a beribboned braid as a half-up, and I liked the result! I took pics at night after a whole day at university, and the hair has started to get stringy, but ah well, it doesn't show that much in the pics. And about the yellow lighting my bathroom has, it tinges everything (I mean, the walls are actually white!!) and makes my hair look way redder than it is :) (and, of course, the pics will be huge, as usual ):

Still a bit messy at the start of the braid...

[Off-topic: I know it looks like it, but I'm not wearing any lipstick here...My lips are naturally red, but I suppose I must give the yellow lighting some credit too, seeing as it has turned my hair bright mahogany, and my face orangey-yellow :D]

You're welcome :) I guess those are crown braids, with the ribbon twisted around?

They are both faux crown braids. The pink ribbon style I learned from here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqbAdvL8kME).

The multi-colored ribbon style was made by separating my hair into two sections at the nape, then wrapping a ribbon figure 8 style around the two hair "columns", thereby fixing them together. After getting to the bottom I brought the "braid" around my head and pinned it in place (faux crown braid style). I don't remember where I learned it from, but it was hard to do on myself.

I also like this (http://www.mfgraffix.com/hird/faoilt/examples.html) page about ribbon hairstyles. I haven't tried all of the styles shown, but it provides some good ideas.

Yes, the ribbon 'dissolving' into the braid is a common happening, I think ;). When you're braiding, try to put the ribbon over the hair each time you cross strands. It's a bit tricky (for me it was, at least) at first, but with a bit of practice you'll notice that the ribbon shows much more. You may need to look at yourself in a mirror while you're braiding...
Hope that helps a bit. :)

I promised PaganPriestess I would show her my new blue-green ribbon for ages, so at last here it is!
I came up with a rather Jane Austen-y hairstyle when using the ribbon for the first time, I really liked how it came out (what I didn't like was the fact that I had failed to brush all the dry shampoo for a certain area!!!!!!):

The ribbon looks peacock blue in the pic, but it's really closer to a blue-green, turquoise-sea green colour...

Have you tried just having the ribbon be the third portion of your braid? Also, white or cream cluny lace looks great braided into a dark hair as it really pops with the contrast.

About ten years ago, we took the QE II to England. I loved having an excuse to dress for dinner. I took a long multi strand pearl necklace ( maybe 4mm pearls or so ) with me. One evening I took one end and pinned it in my temple area hidden behind my hair and wrapped it around the front section of hair as I twisted this front section back toward my crown Then, I held it with a pin while I did the same thing using the other end of the necklace at my other temple, again twisting the pearls around the section of hair and, again, then pinned it at the crown. The actual necklace then formed a "u" down my back.
Then, I took all my hair ( but not the pearls) and put it in a ponytail and did a basic twisted ballerina bun- and pinned it in place. The remainder of the pearl necklace was under the ballerina bun and followed down the nape of my neck...a quick twist of the pearls ( don't even think I had to pin them to stay) to even them out and make the
necklace twist uniform and I had a drop of pearls that went down between my
shoulder blades ( not too far) . With a low back dress it really made a great unexpected addition.

Your ribbon thread ( no pun intended) is making me want to get my lacing bodkin out and try a little stitching in my hair. I'm wondering if you could do a lazy daisy embroidery stitch in the center of a bun with the petals radiating outward? Don't see why you couldn't ...

I love this contrast of the lovely bright ribbon in your dark, mysterious hair. :)

I've been using ribbons in a hair a bit lately. I've got a dark eggplant ribbon that I wrap around my doubled over braid. I'm doing an experiment, seeing if i can ignore the length for a while and also see if the wrapping protects it.
I'm going to stalk this thread to see if I can get more styles to experiment with. :D

Ribbons can be worn at any age! :flower: I'm sure silver would look striking against your grey hair, but so would red or green or violet or blue or whatever colour you fancy!

I did try a french braid last night with a silver ribbon, had trouble keeping the ribbon from slipping when I attached to the mid piece of the first 3 pieces when first starting the braid so I attached a small elastic on that piece and put the ribbon above it,the elastic prevented the ribbom from slipping and it made it much easier, plus it gave a nice looking "start".Am going to try it again tonight.

It's always tricky (at first at least) to keep the ribbon from slipping when you insert it, so don't give up hope :). The elastic tip sounds handy, I'm going to give it a try!

After stacking away hair pics in the correct files :D, I have found these:

-A French beribboned braid one of my Astrophysics fellow-students did for me. She was always complaining about the braid "never ending!!". Hehe. She made it rather tight, because I have very slippery hair, but it doesn't look as puny as I expected!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8458/8026974203_54d4371102.jpg

-A flipped-up bun with two beribboned side braids put into the bun:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8026974691_9eff69dfe7.jpg

-And my latest film hairstyle reenactment, from Helen of Troy (2007):

This is a 4 strand ribboned braid that I learned from a tutorial on Youtube. I like it because it keeps the ribbon uniformly in the middle down the length of the braid, I find it can be a bit haphazard with an English braid. I bought myself this pink ribbon, a nice purple one and an emerald green one especially to use in braids, I think I'm hooked lol :D

I don't think you have anythign to worry about, your hair looks plenty thick, but I know what you mean about fine hair, I have a cousin like that, I personally think fine stranded hair of any thickness is beautiful, it is flowly and silky in ways medium or coarse hair often is not. :)

:flowers: for that, Hollyfire3 :)! I know that hair of any thickness is beautiful, fine or not, but I'm through a 'hair-thickness-crisis' right now with my own , although I'm getting better at it. Sometimes my compressible fine hair annoys me to no end, sometimes it doesn't ;).

i made last week a dutch braid. one strand was replaced by a ribbon.
it's really hard to manage 2 huge strands and a thin one.. because you have to pull it tight the whole time.
Ha, as you can see it isn't easy especialy in the neck

but as bun, holy moly!
