I know, an oxymoron, right?

Headed to an 80s themed Halloween party tonight - a bit bored by the theme, but I do have a fantastic sequined dress to wear. The issue is with the hair, of course.

I've got some braid waves in my hair now thanks to my sleep braid, but there's no way they'll look like a perm by this evening! A knee length side ponytail is going to look ridiculous.

Any ideas on an updo or half up I can do that will look vaguely 80s?

Thanks!

A side ponytail high on your head, held with a colorful scrunchie or multiple colorful scrunchies - that's probably the easiest.

If your hair holds a curl you could curl it and then brush it for 80's big hair :D

Is there a way to curl it in the next 10 hours without heat? That would be an excellent trick to learn!

Hmm, could you possibly put the front section of your hair up into some kind of quiff and leave the rest down so it looks like a mullet?!

Woah, knee length mullet? That's quite the party in back! :D:D

If you had some Caruso steam rollers you could do it in less than an hour ... assuming your hair is silicone-free that is. Sally's sells them. But I don't know you would want to go out and buy rollers just for this...a ponytail is probably easier!

ETA: btw I'm jealous that you have to work to get 80's big hair ... I have to work to AVOID 80's big hair, since that seems to be the default of what my hair wants to do when I wash it and then brush it. Grrr!

True, but it's really good to know that something like that exists. Thanks for teaching me something!

Pin curls? Dampen the hair, apply product if you so desire, and curl your hair into lots of small pincurls. To make the pincurls, take a small section of hair and, starting from the bottom, wrap it around one or two fingers until you reach the scalp. Pin with crossed bobby pins.

If you wet it right now and put it into many small braids (maybe 12-15 of them), will it dry in time? You'll get an authentic 80's-style crimp when you take the braids out. My friends and I did this all the time circa 1987. You need to do the bangs area, though, even if you don't really have bangs - nobody wore their hair flat in front. You can aim a blowdrier on cool at your forehead and spritz the hair in front with hairspray to get some height. More height is better, but just in front. Spray alone will do it - no need to tease.

Hahaha....true. It would be the most EPIC mullet known to man. It was the only thing I could think of though!

I second the multiple big scrunchies idea! Cuz if you don't have some great fluffy scrunchies already... You are missin' out!

Don't forget the makeup! The part that makes makeup look "80's" to me is heavy, colorful blush and eyeshadow slanting upwards and back. Some bright lipstick helps too.

Is it wrong that I love this kind of look!? Haha. Obviously I wouldn't do it everyday but I love it.

Heehee, this thread is so much fun. =D If you need to speed up the drying process, sit in front of a box fan or turn a space heater on low.

I have banana clips from the 80's and curly hair so I live the 80's hair days. Try curls banana clip and curl your bangs feathered like. I'm doing that for my next look. I like foam rollers but that's a preference.

I agree with Cassie 123, crimped hair is 80s, you can get that with multiple micro-braids. Wet your hair and do a few micro-braids 10-20 (however many you can stand, not thinner than 1/3 of an inch, nor thicker than 2/3 of an inch) sleep on them and bam! Crimped hair. :D Then neon colored scrunchies should complete the ensemble. :D

Thanks, but I don't have bangs! I'm sure yours will come out great looking though.

If the braids fail, you could always brush the waves out so you have big 80's hair. With your length it would be big.
Or try and do your hair like Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth! I have know idea how they did it- but its big and 80's and might work with small braid waves:

So true - heck, even a few days worth of braid waves get huge in my hair.

Just washed yesterday, however, so it all calmed down again.

I love the color on that dress!

The braids should give you the look you are going for - that is how I coped with being a 1a/b in the 80s :p

try braiding your hair with her head tilted down so the root is braided upward instead of downward. Does that make sense? When I start my braids that way I get a lot of volume then i put in a pony toil on topof my head to make sure they stay upright

Yeah, the roots didn't really get frizzy like the length did. Ah well, I had my hair down for most of the party and that gave me enough to talk about. Good thing I had to drive myself home, if I'd been playing the LHC drinking game I'd be passed out somewhere right now. "Is that real? It's so long! "Wow, you must use so much shampoo!" It was all friendly, though, so I wasn't ever too annoyed.

The outfit as a whole:

Not going to lie, I kind of wish my hair was like this all the time. I know it's dated, but i love it. Waves make me feel so pretty. :p

Hehe, I forgot about this. Best comment of the night. Little girl and her dad walking behind me as I was headed to the car.

Dad: Look at her long hair, she's like Rapunzel.
Girl: Yeah, but she's not in a tower!
