So xoxophelia started a fun thread for those whose colour isn't brown and isn't blonde (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=80416), and I thought we could do with a thread for those of us who have a no-man's-land colour between brown and red.

We aren't true redheads -- but we aren't brunettes either! You might call your hair auburn, or copper, or chestnut, or titian. You might consider your hair to be a brown that happens to be reddish, or a red that happens to be brownish. But as ambiguous as it may be, it is beautiful!

I'm apparently ginger enough that people decided to hug me on "hug a ginger" day, but my hair looks brown in photos. I've been told "your hair isn't red -- it's definitely brown" just as firmly as I've been told the exact opposite! :p Those who feel they fit into this group, please come and share your photos and stories and PRIDE in this colour here :D

Who wants to join in? :) Please, like the blonette thread, no bashing this colour. :)

Pretty hair ladies! I have also had people call me redhead (which I think is just wishful thinking on their part!!! .. i swear some people are more color blind than they realize)

I am definitely not auburn but it is a pretty color that dye boxes seem to have issues getting right.

I'm a dark auburn :)
Definitely not a ginger auburn, more like burnished copper appliance auburn. :p
I do henna glosses now, so it's far more prevalent than it naturally would be (at least in the sunlight, inside, it looks identical to how it looked before I started the glosses.)

Sign me in! I've always called my hair 'auburn'. It's not red (I wish!), but I don't want to call it just 'brown' either, because it does have red highlights! I've henna'ed twice over it because I really want redder hair, but I haven't got it nearly as red as I would like, so more experiments will soon follow. I like my auburn hair, though, I just want to experiment with more red highlights for a while :)
My hair-colour... It could be called a medium brown with reddish highlights overall, but it varies a lot from roots to ends. At the roots, it's a darker brown with red highlights and a lot of blonde hair at my temples (yes, that's right). It gets a lighter medium brown down the length with highlights that are more coppery-blonde than true red and at the roots it's light brown with a lot of golden-copper highlights.

Some pics to illustrate my multiple-shaded auburn hair :D:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7193&pictureid=96035
This is how my hair-colour looks indoors, more or less (with flash in this case). The copper highlights are much more obvious lit up by the Sun.

Coppery highlights under sunlight...In different angles or under evening sunlight it can look a bit redder. Indoors (especially at night) my hair can look really dark, though, dark brown even...Even with henna.

Natural colour under full sunlight...It can look redder depending on the angle, and the lighting.

Freckles , SwordWomanRiona, and wooliswonderful; gorgeous hair!

I'm never sure if I fit in this group or not. My hair's brown with reddish tones - more brown than full on auburn I think. My hair used to get copper highlights in the summer (I've protected my hair from the sun at the height of summer in recent years so I'm not sure if I still do), but the ACV rinses have skewed things.

Yes, my auburn hair behaves the same way! It looks very similar to your colour indoors, but way less red than your first picture when outside. If I had only seen the first pic, I would have sworn you were a redhead!

Thanks, xoxophelia! :) Hairdressers have said to me, "I get a lot of people come in wanting your colour" and also, "never dye it! You can't dye it back to this colour!" BUT ... I've never known whether that's just the kind of thing that hairdressers say to be nice or if they meant it :p

welcome! I think my hair is more the colour of a two-pence-coin-that-has-been-in-circulation-for-years than it is of anything burnished, but I still like the word 'copper' as a descriptor for any kind of auburn hair, because copper can look so many different colours!

I do think it is actually difficult to dye to correctly. I see tooooooons of people trying to go auburn and it's generally a little too far on the side of red or too orange. I think people would have the best luck with henna glosses maybe.

SwordWomanRiona is right, that first picture is more than 'reddish', if I'd only seen that one there would be no doubt in my mind that you were a redhead through-and-through. But that's the beauty of auburn hair!
I need to get some real sunlight pictures but I am out in sunlight so rarely :p

I think anyone who thinks they fit into this group, does! It's sooo hard to tell from limited photos (again, like the blonettes) that only people who live with this hair know if they have it, I think. You have beautiful hair pepperminttea! Thank you! :D ACV rinses definitely made my red tones a bit brighter. :) I use them for hard water build up, and to help my scalp out, but bringing out the red is a nice side-effect.

Thanks, I guess I didn't realize before how red it looks sometimes, because when I'm out in the sun I don't see my hair. Then people would tell me it was red and I thought "OK, sure..."

I think I'm in this category. I used to be pretty close to red (always on the brown side, but if you asked someone to ID my hair color, the answer would have been red; there's a natural pic from 2003 in my album for the curious). I'm getting a bit more melanin since my late 20s, though, so I'm a mid-dark red-brown something now, under the henna.

I'm in here!

My hair actually started out bright red as a kid, and has gotten much darker over the years.

It can be super red in some lighting:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=8930&pictureid=117283

To pretty much brown:

My boyfriend gives me grief that I can't call myself a redhead anymore, though pretty much everyone I meet casually categorizes me as a redhead.

I have naturally auburn hair. It was red enough for people to call be a "redhead" when I was about 12. I never got made fun of for being "ginger" though. Which is understandable because many don't consider people to be gingers unless they have freckles and light eyelashes (I don't have either). The only kind of negative feedback I got on my auburn hair was being corrected by snappy little middle school girls; saying that auburn isn't a real hair color and that "boring brunettes" just claim to be auburn to seem unique. -_- Meanies...

I'm so glad so many other people are joining in! :D you all have beautiful hair! :)

I'm curious as to whether auburn-haired people have 'redhead' complexions or not? I'm pale, and I bruise really really easily -- which I seem to have in common with my redheaded/ginger friends (yeah, that's totally anecdote. I don't know if bruising easily is a ginger thing, but a ginger friend of mine insists that it is).

I have freckles (obviously!) but I really think that they're both qualitatively and quantitatively different from the freckles of true redheads. I have lots and lots of freckles on my face, but they're light enough that they don't usually show up on camera. (a normal photo of me (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=5162&pictureid=90649), where you can see how light they are, vs with the contrast turned up (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=5162&pictureid=76070), so you can see I actually have them!)
I have freckles on my elbows and shoulders, but less on the rest of my arms, and very very few at all on my legs -- most of my redheaded friends have more even/numerous limb-freckling. I also don't have the light eyelashes commonly associated with redheads.

Anyone got opinions on how closely/not closely they fit stereotyped 'redhead' appearance in other ways?

Oooooh, popping in to admire the colors! I love this color...I dyed my hair "auburn" for awhile (12 years ago) and it looked really good on me and most people thought it was my natural hair color. It is the oclor of my eyes.

ENVY!

This is my hair in winter sunshine. It's more of a mahogany colour here. It's 100% natural:

Amoretti, I love the photo with an apple for comparison
Rhodugune, I love your hair. The second photo is particularly stunning.
WaitingSoLong, I don't think you have any reason to feel envious with hair like yours!! But of course all 'auburn' admirers are welcome in this thread, so, thanks for the comments :D

---

I discovered a new descriptive word that isn't in the OP: "russet". I like it. Apparently, "russet" is for a darker, browner colour with red tinges. Good word.

---

I took some (terrible) pictures of my hair outdoors, which I put in an album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=8992). I was going to say they were of my hair "in the sunlight", but there's not much sunlight here today! Nevertheless, they're in slightly more sunlight than many of my other photos!

Anyone got opinions on how closely/not closely they fit stereotyped 'redhead' appearance in other ways?
I never tan and I burn and bruise very easily. I have light freckles all over my face, arms, and legs and especially numerous and dark freckles on my shoulders and upper back.
I joke with hubby that I am a trill. ;)
Avital88, I also never would have guessed that you had auburn hair, both colors on you are beautiful!
Mountaingrrl, your hair is amazing!!
Rhodugune, Shany, & Amoretti, your hair is so long and pretty! I'm growing out again after saying farewell to my layers and you're great inspiration!!

Auburn is a beautiful haircolor :) This color doesn't belong to any of these categories (blonde, brunette, red) and sometimes, I would like to have redder or blonder hair.

Definitely auburn! So pretty, I wish my hair were that red :).

Well...I have a pale complexion too, but I don't have freckles, and my eyelashes are dark. So I wouldn't say I have a 'redhead complexion'...
Not that you can see it very well here with all the direct sunlight, but here's a 'normal photo of me'. The roots are my natural auburn colour, the length has henna on it too.

I think I might fall into the russet category. I just asked my boyfriend and he said my hair looks coppery in the light. And I've had friends in the recent past ask me if I had recently dyed my hair red or if it had red in it naturally when we're sitting in the light. And I have to be like "No, my hair just looks like that sometimes. It's my natural hair color." Inside it just looks like it's dark brown though. And it rarely gets sunny here so I can't take a shot of my hair in the sun right now. I can't seem to find any good photos that show it in its natural state either. :( I love auburn hair though, so the fact that my hair color has some red in it makes me very happy. :D

I'm pale, rather freckled, but I can tan slightly. It takes a lot of sun to burn me, strangely -- I usually just stay pale. (Some of this might be that I have a bit of an aversion to hot sun, and so I often head for shade when it gets high. :D)

However, I've got darker greenish eyes and essentially black eyebrows. Generally I'm more pigment-y than your average carrot top.

-----

In my observation, where you get freckles is mostly influenced by what parts of your body get lots of repeated sun exposure for several year. My forearms are freckled because I practically live in short-sleeved shirts. It took a few summers of wearing tank tops to get denser freckles on my upper arms and shoulders. Since I tend to wear longer skirts and jeans, my legs are pale other than a few sporadic spots, and my facial freckles have faded since I started wearing makeup.

I'm pale, and I burn easily, but I have an olive complexion, so not the typical "ginger" pale.
I get freckles, but they're sparse, I think I have like eight or nine on my nose/cheek line, and a few on my arms.
I also have darker eyelashes and eyebrows.
So no, I don't have any real ginger coloring.

My eyelashes and eyebrows are black so I'm a combination of classic auburn colouring and non-classic. I have the skin and freckles of a redhead but the brows and lashes of a brunette. :)

About my skin: I have very pale, milky white skin. Only a very light sprinkling of freckles on my nose that show up if I've been in the sun. I do not tan easily, but then I hate going into the sun, I like my pale skin tone.

My eyebrows are the same colour as my hair, and my eyelashes are slightly darker. It's hard to describe the colour of my eyes, they are dark, but not proper brown, I have a lot of dark green and purple shades in them depending on the day lol. They were navy blue when I was little.

Not really sure? My mom's mother is from Hawaii, but she is Portuguese Hawaiian, so she has fairly fair skin but I think it still has olive tones. Both my grandfathers are from Texas, but their families are French. My dad's mom is Austrian, and I look very much like her, she also had olive-toned skin and auburn hair.

My grandma (mom's side) tells me I look like her older sister, who was half Chinese and half Hawaiian, but she was only my grandma's half sister, so I couldn't have gotten the looks from her.

I'm just not rightly sure why I look the way I do.
Jumble of genes I guess.

I'm quite pale for an average person (but not compared to say, Nicola Roberts). I have a good sprinkling of freckles - heaviest on my forearms, much lighter on my face and torso; like yours Freckles, mine don't show up on my face unless you look for them, but it looks like I have fewer of them than you. I don't bruise easily at all, often purple bruises simply won't appear on my skin; they only show up a few days later when they've yellowed (the skin is just as tender as a bruise, but never turns purple - no idea why).

I'm more "russet", I think, but my red tones are definitely there in certain lighting - especially in the ends of my hair, but I've got "mini-highlights" all through. My friend just commented the other day on how red my ends were compared to the rest of my hair, though. :)

Yep, I'm naturally mid-auburn brown and used to be accused of being ginger when younger (was more honey then). Problem is getting it sorted with henna/indigo in terms of the fact that I'm 50% plus grey now, so my lovely brown background is going. That's what makes auburn what it is, as far as I am concerned.

I don't have a good shot that shows it, but I'm chestnut haired. Not really enough red to claim auburn. It's been kind of frustrating, because when I wanted to claim red, my very-red mother made it quite clear that I was not a redhead. My younger sister has been between red and strawberry blonde all of her life and spent about 8 years dying it because she hated it.

I was born redheaded, and at age 2 had some of the deepest red hair I have ever seen naturally. Then by 5 or 6, I was light brown with vivid blonde streaks and stayed that way till I was 12-13. Then it shaded darker and redder again, and I have had chestnut hair for a little over half my life. If I get a lot of sun, I get intense blonde highlights and strawberry blonde streaks cause the brown lightens but the red doesn't.

As for coloring, I have blue eyes that change colors a bit (like my grandfather, but we two are the only ones that do that). The only people I have ever met who are as pale as me are related to me. I did a study abroad in the UK one year, and my housemates thought it was great fun to get fair skinned people to compare coloring to me, and every single one was darker. The real kicker is that I had spent the summer before I went working at a kids camp, in the sun from not long after sunrise until it set and was the darkest I had been in my entire life! It may in all seriousness be a genetic anomaly, as i have an inherited condition that affects the skin and we are not sure which part of the family it came from. I have a lot of freckles and bruise very easily, but the bruising is part of that condition I mentioned. I have fairly dark lashes except that the tips are translucent blonde. Makes my eyelashes look averaged length when really they are so long I can't wear most wrap-around sunglasses.

i wouldnt say i have pride though.. i henna my hair because i dont like the fading.. i actually get less people asking if i dye my hair with henna than i do when i go natural at any length longer than the pic above..

i call it chestnut at a shoulder length bob.. any longer and people start calling me a redhead..

the henna goes well with my coloring.. freckles and pale skin..

under a microscope my virgin hair has a brown cuticle and a red core.. my brother has full on carrot orange hair.. i think it very likely that i carry that gene.

oh BTW thats an indoor pic..

For those asking if you belong here ... only you can answer that! It's VERY difficult to show any kind of 'true' colour of my hair on a photograph, I've found, so none of us will be able to tell you if your hair is auburn -- but presumably you know. We don't have bouncers here :) Join the thread if you feel like you want to do so.

My hair absolutely cannot decide which colour it is. I think I'm in the no man's land between brown and auburn, rather than between brown and red. It's definitely more brown than red, but sometimes in the daylight it will suddenly look bright copper.

In indoors sunlight, looking pretty coppery orange:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3722&pictureid=94721

Indoors sunlight, looking light brown:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3722&pictureid=78282

Indoors flash (dark outside), looking brown-auburn (this is what I usually think my hair colour is):

Outdoors with cold winter light, with red jacket for comparison:

I have henna glossed my hair since those pictures were taken (though it isn't very visible), but in all those pictures my hair was all virgin and thus supposedly the same colour

I love auburn hair, and wish there was a bit more red in mine - thus the henna gloss, but I think I need to take the plunge and go all out with the henna for there to be a big difference, as my hair is (well, most of the time :p) somewhat dark.

I have a lot of freckles and bruise very easily, but the bruising is part of that condition I mentioned. I have fairly dark lashes except that the tips are translucent blonde. Makes my eyelashes look averaged length when really they are so long I can't wear most wrap-around sunglasses.

Your eyelashes sound identical to mine! I get them from my grandma, who has a very fair complexion. I also have a decent amount of freckles and fair skin in the colder months, but the Native American blood in me allows my skin to tan in the Summer. I bruise easily as well. I wouldn't call my hair auburn exactly, its more of a medium-dark brown with natural red highlights. It can lighten to an auburn shade in the Summer. My eyebrows aren't very dark either - more like a medium brown.

My SISTER on the other hand has more of an auburn shade to her hair, but she has dark eyebrows and lashes. She also has very fair skin and bruises easy, but she doesn't have as many freckles as I do.

Fair skin here, but with a yellow/warm cast. Dark green/hazel eyes, very dark brows and lashes (golden tips). I can flush easily - and am over-sensitive to changes in temperature (sorry, just thought I'd put that in!) :) Oh, hair = mid-auburn brown.

I cant believe Ive never noticed this thread before! My reddishness is something I obsess over bigtime! Im probably more on the strawberry blonde side than the auburn, but I do understand the 'am I red' or 'am I brown' plight! When I first logged into LHC I just went by Bandia...then after getting several redhead compliments here and on other redhead sites I liked to frequent I added Rua which is basically 'reddish' (and Bandia means goddess) But sometimes I too still wonder if Im just lying to the internet community about being a redhead, which I really dont mean to do. It was a lot redder when I was a kid. I have an awful complex about this topic, My family does at times get sick of it Im sure as I will ask them "is my hair red?" or "was it ever red to begin with?" On the occasions when I do get a redhead compliment I feel kind of like I dont deserve it, though I cherish those moments greatly...If someone says my hair is brown or blonde I just hate it.

Just recently I found some old pawn tickets of mine from two different pawn shops, and in the area where they put a descritpion of the person pawning items one shop listed me as having red hair, and the other one as brown. So I dont know...lol

AHA!!! Glad I found you here! My hair is just like that, it can be percieved as pretty much any colour. I hated it for years, any darkening dye seemed way to harsh, and lightening it always left me ginger due to the reddish tint it has. I love it now because it turns a realy good red with henna. :)

This has been a fun thread to read! My hair is a dark auburn with a lot of red tones visible in bright light. The past year or so I've started graying, so I am letting the henna grow out. Looking forward to more silvery tinsel mixed in amongst the natural auburn tones. :D

Pretty hair ladies! I have also had people call me redhead (which I think is just wishful thinking on their part!!! .. i swear some people are more color blind than they realize)

I am definitely not auburn but it is a pretty color that dye boxes seem to have issues getting right.
What is the best box dye you have used?

robey- I haven't used many types of hair dye. Mostly, wella semipermanent, and natural instincts. I do see many women going for the auburn look though (on some websites you can even see it is the most frequently bought on their page) and it tends to go too red or maroon. To me, auburn has gold and red tones but it is more subdued with some rich light brown.

I'm on the fringe of belonging here, I think. I've called my color "auburn" since I was a teenager, but usually when other people say they have auburn hair, I'm like "What? Where?" Definitely less red than I consider auburn to be. I'm confident that I do have the two recessive genes for red hair and at one time my hair was very bright. But it's gotten darker and the brown may be taking over.

I had a co-worker a few years back who insisted my hair was brown. I blamed the incident on only working night-shift with him, having dyed my hair green a few months prior, and him being color-blind! But still, it made me wonder if I need to change my identity.

Also, when I cut bangs, my best friend asked me if I'd dyed my hair brown. And when I used a temporary fire-engine red hair dye, an acquaintance said that I was a redhead now. D:

xoxophelia- My natural hair color is perfect for me but alas I have greys, well not grays more like white threads ,,,,, I am so young to have them so I have to colour my hair or else have people as me why I look like I have an X-men Rouge streak lol.

I have noticed the permanent dyes I used to use, (I changed to semi on my roots after joining LCH) do have more color variations in colour but semi is said to be more natural and less damaging.
I used some Natural Instincts tonight, but I didn't leave it in long enough still have some white hairs peaking though.
And your right box dyes can't seem to get it right I agree 100% that a good auburn must have gold, copper, red and light light brown tones for a nice auburn.

I think I found my go to shade of semi tonight but we will see how it fades;)

I think I fit into this group too! I have mousy brown hair with reddish tones to it (though I've just started growing out naturally after 13 years of dying, so I'll wait and see). I've definitely got a very Scottish redhead complexion: very pale skin which burns easily, loads of freckles that are more obvious in the sun and green eyes. I'm a secret ginger really!

Hi there! I probably don't fit in here, but I don't seem to fit into any other color category either. I have a few red tones and once in a blue moon my hair looks reddish, but it mostly looks really ashy. It would be blonette if it weren't for my numerous dark hairs. It stays pretty much the same color in different lighting, but what that color is is up for debate. A lot of people have called me blonde or blondish, but they're all mistaken because my hair is way too dark. The only thing giving the illusion of blonde is the ease with which it lightens in the sun. It turns a really golden color that I don't like.
All of the above is the properties of my natural hair. It has a whole lot of dye in it that I'm working on getting out, but for now I just look red/auburn. I'll be checking back in a few months. :)

Pretty hair everyone!

Someone asked about complexions, so I thought I'd answer though it's pretty irrelevant in my case.
I used to have freckles but they disappeared. I tan pretty easily and am not really pale, but I couldn't put a name on my skin tone. I don't know about bruising. I have dark eyelashes and eyebrows. I have blue eyes. Is that enough?

I think I may belong here...but I'm not sure! I've been called, brown, blond, blondette, mouse, red, brunette, ash and auburn. So I have no idea :p My parents always said auburn, though..

Here's a pic of the back of my head: (click-able)

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6715/img0210ck.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/img0210ck.jpg/)

And the side of my head, in shadow:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=9875&pictureid=128743

It looks dark in the first picture, and ash in the second...but definitely with red. My father is from Italy, and he had copper hair, and when he grew out his beard, it was red! So mixed with my mother's blonde, it made whatever I have :)

My complexion is a cool-toned, light olive. I super-tan in the summer (think bronze Mediterranean) and go pale in the winter. I have black eyebrows and eyelashes, green eyes, and bruise if you look at me too hard :D

Any ideas?

I have absolutely no idea what my hair color is. I mean, I see it, but I don't know what to call it. I've been hanging out in the blonette thread wondering if I belong there. Someone pointed out that I have reddish hues in my hair and at first I was like "huh?" and then I was like "oh, yeah, I guess so." This was actually related to a picture of a chestnut horse.

I always thought my hair had ash tones, and I still think it does. I don't know if it's possible to have both red and ash tones at the same time. Anyway I figure I might as well hang around here and wonder whether I belong, too. :D Maybe one day I will decide for sure.

Well, hey you auburn-haired lovlies! Funny to see how the variations of skin and eye color occur in the same hair color family, isn't it?

I was born with black hair, turned pale blond in early childhood, which darkened during my pre-teen and teen years. I always had a mix of colors after the paler blond years--gold, red, browns, blond from almost white to golden, even a black one here and there. A few years ago my hair was turning that odd ashy color they called brownette on Barbie dolls, and I got a few steel grey hairs then, but now it's getting darker again and the greys are silver.

My skin is fair, I tan (or I would if I could go out in the sun), minimal freckles (I don't count age spots), and my eyes change color depending on what I'm wearing--they are denim blue today--from grey to green to blue to violet.

My ancestry is mostly Scot (Dad's side) and German (mom's side), with some Native American on both sides, and an odd English (Dad's side) or Irish (mom's side) genes thrown in.

I think I can join in here. I wouldn't say my hair is red until I see the color it is in some pics with a flash or in the sun. See my siggy for example. In real life I can sometimes see red highlights in my hair but it is more ash colored, like here...

I belong here.
I can't number the amount of times someone has said to me, "but you don't have red hair, its brown." I have also had an equal amount of people tell me my hair is red. I get the "you must have dyed it," comment too, since my eyebrows are dark and my hair is quite variegated. I use henna now on the roots to blend my greys and in a funny way it's reaffirmed my colour for me since it blends so well with the natural colour.

I am freckled but I do NOT burn and I tan oh so very slightly, so I'm not pale and I'm not dark. I have blue eyes. I am the only one in the immediate family with the blue eyes hair and lighter hair. All else have/had dark dark brown hair and brown or green eyes. My Grandmother was Auburn haired I am told though her photos are sadly all black and white.

Yay so glad to see so many other auburn heads!:flower: I'll post some pics once we get some sunshine here since I go from deep red brown to tarnished copper coin to golden red depending on the light. Have any of you tried chamomile rinses to enhance your red tones? I always thought I was way too dark for it to have any effect but after experimenting, I find it's the best colour enhancing herb for my particular tone. It seems to make the redder sunbleached strands on my ends and canopy look a lot more vibrant somehow. I'm also using a paprika, hibiscus and rosehip infused ACV rinse as an experiment, but it seems like whole steeped chamomile flowers are having the most noticeable effect for me.

I think I'm auburn. My mom has always said I'm medium golden brown, but there's so much red in it that people say I'm red. It always pulls brassy when it lightens, and I have teal and olive eyes and a peach/yellow undertone. But then, it may be leftover color.

My hair's definitely brown, but I have red highlights and it can look reddish in the sun... I don't consider myself auburn but I guess I could be called that. (My sig photo on the right is henna, btw)

Though once I was over at a friend's apartment with my boyfriend. My boyfriend and our friend left to go on a walk while I was in the bathroom and abandoned me with said friend's drunk father. He then spent the next 20 minutes while they were gone INSISTING that I have RED hair. I finally agreed I have some reddish hues, but no, "NO NO no no, you have RED hair! Don't you see? Definitely red!" Etc etc.

Some people are just really opinionated about hair color, I guess.

ETA: I told my boyfriend about this when we went home for the night, and was not-so-pleased to learn that this guy apparently has a red hair ******. Explains a lot.

My hair (and my mother's) was always referred to as auburn. Probably a medium auburn. You could see red highlights even inside, and when photos were taken outside, my hair always appeared lighter and much redder than I thought it actually was. People often complimented me on my hair color, which I must say I never really appreciated that much - that is, until I started to turn gray and lose it. You're right about the difficulty of recapturing it from a bottle.

My hair is auburn too:) and I finally love it. I was born with black hair that went blond and later turned to brown-copperish(especially during summer). I experimented a lot with highlights and bleach but was never satisfied because I wanted the "blond" to be cool but my reddish pigments always found their way through. So I went dark brown, almost black, which to be honest, made me look washed out somehow.
Now I have come to my senses and realized natures has right..no other shade compliments my green brown eyes more or make my complexion look alive. My grandfather(on my mothers side) had auburn hair and ginger beard paired with brown eyes but tanned really easily, his father and sisters was/are more celtic so to speak with light skin, freckles and ginger hair. My father used to have dark auburn hair with steel grey eyes. I don't have any freckles and I tan easily but I try to be careful anyway. My eyelashes are light brown with translucent ends and I bruise fairly easy.
Thank you for starting this thread!

I think I am one of you guys.
When I was a toddler I had copper hair and could get easily tan (not just any tan, but dark brown tan, like I haven't had a bath in 6 months), then my hair darkened with natural goldish blond highlights in front. Consequently have been many times accused of having them made by hairdressers. No one believed me they are naturals. Yep still have them at almost 37 years hehe.
Anyhow, my hair has all colors except gray, but mostly I am brownish reddish ... some say I have hazel hair, but when the sun hits them, they go really reddish or if flash is the name of the game when taking pics. And some shampoos do enhance my red tone. On most pics I am brunette.
I have very fair skin, get easily bruised, my eyelashes are brownish and translucent, and have coffee colored eyes.
So what do you think, am I brunette or auburn or something else?

Let's do it like this: I will post some pics and you will tell me whether I can stay or I should go back to Blondette thread, ok? :) I am not sure where I belong. I joined Blondette thread because I knew I have mixed colour, and it was the only option for "in between" people for some time. I think brown-red description is more accurate than blonde-brown. My hair looks reddish sometimes, but never blonde. But, as I said, it was the only thread for mixed colours ;)
So, sometimes it looks reddish, especially in the sun. The left pic is direct sunlight. But on a cloudy day it's just brown, as on the right side.

There are a couple of interesting themes in this thread.

General insecurity about colour - (am I auburn? - do I really have red tones? - other people see it or don't see it.)

and

Hair that has changed colour (naturally changed) over the childhood years and sometimes beyond.

I can definitely identify with both these things. I was born auburn haired which lightened to blonde, then went mid brown, then darker then lightened and settled at auburn again at about 20 (I think) . . . Of course now it's turning grey.

Mine is on the darker end of auburn; it's more likely to be called black than red, but it's definitely dark brown most of the time. It has its red moments, and I wish there were more of those, but at least it has a few here and there. :)

Well if you hear different color descriptions of your hair... it is bit confusing I admit it.
The funniest thing happened years ago when I was on practically empty bus and heard a young guy said to his friend, look at that readhead and pointed in my direction, and no readheads on the bus ...

If I use a shampoo with B5 in it brings my redness out even more. Did anyone else have the same experience?

I agree on both points :). My hair can look very brown, dark brown even, in some lightings, then in others you see a lot of copper highlights and red tones. I guess I still long for more red, and red all the time :), but changing auburn hair is very pretty too, I must admit.

When I was a child, my hair was definitely lighter and redder...a lovely light auburn. Now, unfortunately!, it has darkened, but the red tones are still there, especially in the length.

I'm a coppery auburn-haired girl, although I always wish for just a bit more red :) it's so variable in the light though. There are a couple of people who call me Red at work and one who teases me about having a tempestuous temper because of the red, and I secretly love it :D

It's an unusual color, and I get lots of compliments on it.

:waving: Hello to my fellow auburnettes! (?) hehe.

::bump::
My hair is very multidimensional. I have some dark red/light auburn streaks from the sun, a lot of dark auburn in the middle, and dark brown streaks on the inside and bottom of my hair where it gets the least exposure. A lot of this is only visible in sunlight. I've had people try to convince me my hair is just dark brown under fluorescent lighting, and I've had to agree to dissagree.
ETA: My mom says it looks red outside. My dad's hair is the same color as mine. She says we're the matching redheads, and she jut got her hair dyed to match!

I don't have any pictures to prove it yet but this thread fits me to a tee! When I was born and as a little girl I had beautiful red hair! As I've aged my hair has faded and gotten darker. I describe my hair color as the color of oak leaves in late autumn. Now you know the reason for my screen name here on LHC....:)

I've noticed that the products that I use can make a difference in my hair. It must be the light reflecting properties, what else, but the difference it noticeable, at least for the hair obsessed me :D Pantene makes my hair obviously reddish. Biosilk Hydrating Conditioner made it more brown. Interesting.

That is getting too complicated now

Anyhow, in case anyone with more knowledge pops in, maybe you can let me know if my hair color is auburn. I grew out henna for yearsjust to find my hair still looks red. I was originally hoping for a cool brown shade.
My hair mostly looks dark brown, and red, orange, golden comes out in different light. When people guess what hair color I have I get anything from almost black, over red and blonde. I am so confused.

plus the bright red the lighter sunbleached parts look in strong sunlight is in my sig pic - they got really lightened when I went through a (short lived) sunbedding phase when it was just shoulder length, to the point where about a year ago (before joining LHC!) I did a few super fine highlights with bleach left on for 5 minutes to try and blend it, but after a couple of goes it didn't make enough difference to keep on bothering to do it, although I think some of the brightest copper threads near the ends might be from that experiment - hope my pic spam helps!

My roots are more just like a warm brown, and the longer my hair gets the warmer, more reddish, and lighter it gets.
Indoors and without sunlight it looks darkest. Direkt sun light around noon can also make it look pretty dark...I have a picture somewhere where this shows, but could not find it.
I think if light hits from the side it looks lightest, pretty pale actually and with more golden tones.

Oh, you have some really lovely golden tones, it's gorgeous! You're right, it is much lighter than mine, the colour makes me think of dark honey...
It's so hard to work out where warm brown stops and auburn begins, especially since auburn itself is an inbetween type of colour - too brown to be red, but too red to be brown  Maybe that could be the official auburn criteria - if your answers to "is it red?" and "is it brown" are both "nah...not really, um, I guess kind of?" then you're one of us :rolling:

I was able to take some pictures where it does look even a bit darker and the difference to the ends is shown very well. It does lighten up much and my roots seem hardly red.

I think I have found a thread where I fit in! Yay! I'm not brown, blonde, or red! I'm auburn!! In pictures my hair looks really dark (don't have any ATM), but IRL my hair is light brown with red tints. Every time I get out of the shower these days DH comments on how red my hair looks. :inlove: Of course it's not RED, but I'll take what I can get. I think people use them interchangeably, maybe chestnut has a little less "orange" tones in some lights? I describe my hair as both though since sometimes it can look pretty brown.
I got some more colour shots today in the late afternoon/early evening springtime sun, since I wanted to compare how much lighter the ends look.

I think I fit in here! People have told me my hair color is anywhere from black, brown, to chestnut. I have lots of red but can be hard to tell in certain lighting because it is dark. I would say my hair is a dark chestnut... In some lighting it looks auburn though. I would love to try henna gloss and bring out more red. I get the red tones from my mothers side. She is mostly Irish :)
My skin tone is somewhat fair with neutral/cool undertones. I also have freckles on my face, but they are quite light and become darker with more sun exposure. I usually burn, then tan. I have warm dark brown eyes. And my lashes and eyebrows are very dark.

Not an auburn- but I am obsessed with colours and complexions ;)

I think part from having warm undertones (obviously) auburns and gingers can differ a great deal. Gingers tend to be in the spring season (light, bright, warm complexion) and auburns are often in the autumn season (dark, soft, warm). Of course there are many sub-types and in-betweens:) Most of the difference is in auburns having orange-red undertones and gingers having golden-orange undertones.

I don't know about the freckles and the bruising. Not sure if it's actually there or just a stereotype. I have blondette almost grey hair myself, and I get freckles and bruises a lot:P Maybe it is in having light skin.

My freckles are like yours. I have quite a lot on my face, but they often don't show in pictures. I bruise easily, but that is because I have von willebrands. My sister is a legimate redhead, and she bruises easily, but it's very likely she has von willebrands as well, she just has not been tested (she doesn't want to be diagnosed because that means no NSAIDS :p).

While i wouldn't call me complexion olive, I have olive tones in my skin. I rarely burn and tan super easily. My sister on the other head is very pale, burns super easily and never tans.

I have been called a ginger in occassion, so... :hmm:

LLL} Haha, me neither... When I think of auburn hair, I think of a perfect mix of deep brown and red, and my hair is way too light to fit into my own idea of auburn. ...What do you think you would call my hair colour? My hair is hard to classify in two ways... It's both straivy and has got a colour I can't really categorize.

I've checked a few of your pictures on your LHC page now, and I'd say your hair is auburn! But the colour changes a lot depending on the light, but I guess it's the same way for all hair colours.

I'm giving up trying to figure out what hair color I have. I'm going to do an omber-style dye of henna on the bottom 4-6" as soon as I gather up the money for the henna. So then no one will know what my hair color is. LOL!

I've been reluctant to share in this thread because my natural color isn't red anymore.
When I was in grade-school, my hair was bright strawberry blonde, and I got teased about it a little. I grew to like it in my teens, but in my 20's it started coming in ash brown. I tried for years to embrace it, but felt like I was walking around with a raccoon pelt on my head.

I have a friend about my age with similar hair. She has 3 flaming, redheaded children; but her own hair has ashed to brown.

Henna has been a lifesaver for me. It makes me feel "normal" and settled in my own skin. I love ash brown on other people, but it felt wrong for me. FWIW: I have a lot of freckles that pop out when I get a little sun, and my skin is quite pale. Brown eyes. Most of my freckles are on my face, and I'm freckled more than most people on my arms and legs, but not as many as most redheads.

Thank you for inspiring me! ;) I thnk I will wait a few month and then decide wheter I will gro it out or not... ;)

Is it possible to be have daarrrrk brown hair and fit here? I have no idea, but I was just wondering what my hair color is. It's dark brown with natural red(ginger) highlights that are dramatically more noticeable in the summer (close example: http://www.besthairstyles2013.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/auburn-hair-colors-9.jpg). The day before washing my hair (looks like this: http://img.webmd.com/dtmcms/live/webmd/consumer_assets/site_images/articles/health_tools/hair_color_options_slideshow/getty_rm_photo_of_woman_with_dark_hair.jpg) I've had friends who actually think I died my hair a darker color :p.

My hair seems a little light for auburn, too dark for blonde, too red to be just brown, but not red enough. It's closest to golden brown on the hair dye charts, though now I have developed natural silver highlights :)

As a whole, my hair appears brown with auburn streaks, but depending on the conditions, it can photograph almost black, slightly ashy, brown, and sometimes a bit red-ish. Or, as my hair likes to say, :wigtongue. I have freckles on my nose and I get pale in the winter, but tan pretty easily once the weather gets nice.

It's hard to get it to show up accurately on the camera, but I have a lot "shimmery copper-red" strands mixed in with the brown. Okay here's a close picture:

My hair was much more red as a child (and I lost those curls!) . I would still say that I belong in this group. I am fair with pink tones and hazel eyes. No freckles, but I burn easily and never tan. I have about 8 inches of my own hair at this point. I am realizing that my natural auburn looks better with my completion anyways! Very exciting :)

Hey all you reddish folk! Growing up, my hair color was all over the place. My base was kind of a deep chestnut brown, but because I spent so much time out in the sun it'd get bleached out to different shades of auburn and blonde. As I got older, it darkened and got redder. I started dying it varying shades of red periodically through high school. Since about 2009 I've restrained myself to only henna and only do it occasionally. Indoors it looks like my natural color, kinda a reddish medium brown, but in the sun it's pretty brilliant! I too lust after that gorgeous coppery red of a natural redhead, but alas, without bleaching my hair to death I can't get it light enough for the henna to work that way :(

My hair actually seems lighter auburn inside, but these are pretty close. I used CV auburn henna poo bar, but neither my mom of DH really could tell a difference. I thought it would show up in the sun more, but my mom said I have always had a red glow in the sun.

Lovi, our hair actually looks pretty close!

My question to all you auburn a is what woods can you use? Can use do pink ivory, purpleheart, various rosewoods, padauk and so on?

The cocobolo looks great, yes, but I don't have any other wooden forks to share, sorry. I do have a wooden stick, but I don't know what kind of wood it is. It could be rosewood, because I purchased a rosewood fork and the stick came as a freebie with it. The fork was terrible and broke on me, but the stick has been nice.

Redheads usually have freckles but not all auburns do so that is probably why it was discusses. I am not sure about eye color.

I have freckles. They come out on my face in the sun and a ton on my arms and randomly everywhere else too that stay there all the time. My eyes are blue.

All right fellow Auburn folks, is Auburn genetically considered red or brown?

So I looked up how red hair works, and as far as I understand, auburn is the result of people carrying one copy of a mutated gene as opposed to two copies that would result in fully red hair. This gene is also responsible for the characteristic pale skin and freckles that red-heads have. This helps explain why many (but not all) auburn-heads have similar coloring to "true" red-heads. I'll post again with a link in a bit.

EDIT: Here's that link http://genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask189

I'm a dark-ish chestnut brown. If I wash my hair too much, swim too much, or stand in the sun too long, though, it becomes more red and less brown as it lightens.

#Auburn hair problems: When your hair looks dark brown with very subtle red undertones in one shot, and then lighter and very reddish in other shot. Usually in similar lightings

My hair tends to do that too - it's a brunette but has it's reddish moments under certain light. I was dying it black from early 2009 until recently and upon quitting dye I thought I'd lose the reddish but clearly it's back.

Here is me from a few months back, just growing out black hairdye but the reddish is caught by the light a bit. It's all over my tips as well.

I think I belong here, too! I was strawberry blonde as a baby, but was solidly copper by the time I was a tween. In my adult years, I've often been called Titian-haired, though, as is the case with many natural redheads, my color has faded as I've gotten older. In my 20's, I played around with highlights and box dyes to give it the "oomph" I remember from my elementary school days, and ended up blonde - not a good look for me, so I went with henna to get back to my roots, pun intended.

I stopped henna a while ago, and even my hair stylist can't see where the henna stops and my natural color begins. So, I've come full circle only to realize that the color I've wanted for so long is the color that's been on my head the whole time. I wish it had the same glow under incandescent and fluorescent lights that it has in the sunshine, but I've come to terms with it.

Both my dad and my brother-in-law are auburn, and my boys have red highlights. All of us are freckled, and all except BIL are blue-eyed (BIL is brown-eyed).

So, that's me. I love all the different shades of auburn in this thread. I've always thought it was a warm-toned color (based on personal experience), but there's a nice mix of warm and cool in these pages.

I thought this was a really interesting article on color analysis related to redheads. http://expressingyourtruth.blogspot.com/2014/11/warm-spring-vs-warm-autumn-how-do-you.html I am definitely more Amy than Marcia - how about you?

I was actually wondering about skin tones and Auburn hair. One reason why I took me so long to accept my auburness aside from the fact that i was platinum blonde but darkened so gradually and reddened so gradually over the years that it wasn't noticeable on a year to year basis, is that my skin tone is not reddish white, white, or light beige. I have light olive skin or beige skin that tans very readily and I don't have freckles. Yet i have those green eyes :D

I didn't realize so many people's hair changed the way mine does. I'm never quite sure if it's brown or red. Most people will say it's red, which is fine by me, but so often inside, it looks brown. My hair too, has changed from strawberry blond, to ginger to auburn as I've gotten older. I do help it with henna/indigo.
