This is for the dark blonde, light brown, tawny, "dishwater" blonde, municipal grey, blonde-brown-red haired LHC members and those who also appreciate the hair color.

Please no negativity or bashing of the color in this thread. I think instead we should post pictures of our own hair and those with it that we admire or find to have beautiful heads of hair. We can also discuss why we love the color, what colors suit it well etc

Let the Blonette Pride Parade begin :D

I will start with some pictures I found inspiring when first starting to grow out my natural from my old raven dye. :)

Well, my friend has that hair colour and I must say, that it's one of the most 3dimentional hair colours I know - it gets highlights from the sun quite easily and looks great, highlights or not!

Go Blondette!
(I had a friend, who used to call that colour "mousy quarterblonde" but I think this term is rather unplesant :( )

A thread where I belong! As a child I was super blonde until my hair faded into a mousy brown with blonde baby hairs! I wish I had good photos of my hair to show you, but unfortunately I don't since i'm growing out my dye :(
Instead i'll share with you my inspiration: Abbey Lee Kershaw

Unfortunately she has cut all her hair off and dyed it platinum blonde, it looks good but her natural hair is just so gorgeous!

I belong here :) I have browney-blondey-red hair. I'm currently growing out my dark brown dye, i have 2 inches of natural growth and can't wait to see it longer! The only problem i have found is its not possible to find a box dye to get it back close to my natural shade, i guess true 3 dimensional dyes are hard to come by lol.

I love seeing these inspirational pics, they are so motivating!
Rosie Huntington-whitely (she was in transformers 3) has stunningly beautiful blonette hair, i drooled over her hair most of the way through the film haha.

Oh, this is me. No one can ever decide if I'm blonde or brown, nor can they pin a color down on me. I've had it labelled caramel, tawny, dishwater, light brown, dark blonde, light chestnut mousy, etc. No one agrees. I think it's funny! :D I wish that it was darker, but since I'm not going to dye it I'm going to have to learn to love it.

I know what you mean about true 3 dimensional dyes, that's what's so gorgeous about natural hair colour. It's something that you can't get out of a box and it's so uniquely beautiful!

zirena- I love abbey's natural hair! I looked her up and it is a real shame she went platinum. It doesn't have the same depth or flatter her skin the same way as her natural.

siaraven- I am growing out darker dye as well. The first few inches were the hardest because it was most noticable then. Best of luck on your journey growing out the dye :)

Not a blonette, but I seriously adore this colour of hair, especially those of the ashier tones (in fact, I'm actually considering going this colour when December rolls around). It's just so interesting the way it can look brown or blonde, golden or ashy depending on the lighting. It keeps people guessing all the time ;D I've honestly never understood why it's considered to be "mousy", "dull", "boring" or any of the negative qualities it has been associated with.

Ashy roots, natural highlighted lenght. I love it :)

Sometimes when I start to get the urge to go red, I just think about all the upkeep and the one color look and I step away from the dye :p

I'm a blonette! I really like the color of my hair and don't consider it to be mousy. Occasionally, I will do a honey lightening treatment to brighten it a little.

My blonette hair is in my siggy pic. :)

Very nice pictures!
Although I consider half of them to be either really brunette or really blonde  I guess it also depends on where you go and who you ask. My hair would be considered dark brown in some parts of the world and dark blonde in others.

I"m a dark brunette but both of my children have this "color". I love it! My son's is darker than my daughter's, but both pickup golden highlights after a good summer.

It's dark enough to look shinier but light enough that you can see layers and movement. With my dark hair, curls don't show up as well.

I should have grown out this natural color sooner!

Yep, count me in! My mom used to refer to my hair as "dirty blonde" and I hated it so much that I highlighted and bleached for years. Now I'm learning to like my hair color, I refer to it as "dark blonde" instead and have laid off of the heavy bleaching for awhile now. I only get a few foils around my face once or twice a year. There are so many beautiful "dark blondes" on LHC that is really is inspirational!

YAY! People like me! I have had the same comments! I use sun-in or bleach highlights. My hair has been called dishwater blonde, light brown, dark brown, light blonde. I think it has something to do with translucency of this type of hair. Our hair color is at the mercy of light.

When I was younger I had hair white blonde hair and now it's the translucent color with blonde highlights.

In sunlight or overhead florescent it's white blonde. In low light it looks dark brown. In a well lit room with warm or yellow light it looks medium gold.

This is the thread for me! It's so encouraging to read about everyone loving their "blondette" hair! I am growing my hair out after 7-8 years of peroxide highlighting, and it's been a struggle to accept that my natural color is beautiful on its own. I'm slowly gaining more confidence in my own hair and this thread is so encouraging! Thanks everyone!

Yay I'm glad people are taking something good away from this thread.

We should love our hair color for what it is instead of always pointing out what it is not :)

Things I like about my natural hair color:
-it is dark enough to be face framing against my fair skin
-it is golden enough to shimmer
-it is subtle and so can look sophisticated
-it is rare because I see so few people sporting it
-when in nature I feel like with my long hair that is a suble color I "fit in"
-it isn't a harsh color so it looks good with pastels and light baby pink which I like
-I look good without makeup with my natural hair color

It's this quality about it that makes it hard for me to always love it on me, even though I love it on other people. Sigh, it certainly looks strange on facebook when your pictures showcase pictures of you with brownish looking and then very light blonde hair all within the same time frame. Oh well though, it is lovely and I just need to think that it will be lovely on me. But I notice that so many of these models who have it have very pale white skin and my skin usually has a natural olive tan to it, so I feel like it doesn't go as well.

I can't imagine why anybody would think that strange, on Facebook or anywhere else! Besides, I'm sure some people change their hair color as often as their underwear, so I'm sure nobody looks at your pics and asks why you're light blonde one minute, and dark blonde the next. I know many of my friends practically changed their hair daily (on purpose) when I was teens/twenties.

You guys all have beautiful hair :) I have always loved how multi-dimensional this color looks. I have several friends with this color hair who bleach it, and while the blonde looks fine, the "blonette" is just so beautiful. I wish my dark brown hair had such a range of color!

Can I be a blonette, too? I don't really think I'm blonde, or brown either. Something in between similar to the shade of honey or caramel? People ask me what color my hair is, and if I ask HB, he thinks I'm crazy. It does get natural highlights in the sun, and also looks great red. But I like to leave it natural because it is kinda different on its own and so many people these days color their hair, it is nice to have virgin hair for a "change."

I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!

I have naturally dark blonde/light ash brown hair and I henna it. For the last month or two I have been wishing I had my natural color like crazy. I am sick of the red but it looks so horrible when my roots grow in because they are lighter than the rest of my hair. I have henna on-hand and can't seem to resist dying when I think of how looooong it would take to grow out my natural color.

People are ALWAYS bashing this color hair. Mostly it's when they are talking about themselves rather than someone else but it always makes ME feel bad. For example... "I color my hair because my natural color is dirty dishwater and so BLAH."

My daughter's hair is the same exact color as mine was. I haven't had my natural color since I was about 13 so here is a picture of hers.

Blonette! Now that's a new term for me, but perfectly describes my natural color. I'm in the process of growing my highlights and brown dye out, but I'll definitely be looking here when the growing gets tough and I start to reach for the dye again. Now if only I could find a box of hair color called "blonette"...

This is defiantly me. I have always had a hard time describing it to people so I might have to start using this term. I've been trying to grow out the henna in my hair. I was doing pretty well till I decided to try and bleach part of it. We had to re-color just to try had fix it. So sadly I've only got about an inch of natural color showing. I'm actually pretty excited about growing my hair out sans henna. It's been years since I've seen my real color that I've almost forgotten what it looks like.

I also have this color. I used to dye my hair red and now Im trying to go back to natural. I got most of my lenghth close but I dont think they make a dye this color so Im living with roots for now.

My kids are all very close to my color but for some reason I consider my older daughter brunatte and the other two blondes even though the difference is very small.

What a great idea for thread, as dark blonde definitely is one of the most underrated hair colours, if not the most underrated! Especially dark ash blonde. How I hate that term "dirty blonde", all the more as people often seem to use it as a descriptive term, although it's actually pejorative... :(
And over here people call this colour "highway coloured" or "road coloured" ("maantienvärinen", not that easy to translate), and it's considered such an "average" hair colour, in every sense... (Although the truth is that most people who have that colour dye it, so it's actually quite rare to see it...)

Need I say anymore that my natural colour is also dark blonde (on the ashy side)? But I'm constantly vacillating between dyeing/hennaing and letting it grow natural, and usually end up hennaing (or otherwise dyeing)... Also for the above mentioned reasons, but also as I'm not at all sure it's actually the colour that suits me best, or even close. Well, otherwise I would hardly have been dyeing/hennaing my hair for most of my life, of course... (Yeah, I know there are two different schools of thought here regarding natural/dye, I know that one thinks natural always suits best, and the other one doesn't )

In any case, it's so great to see an encouragement thread for this colour (or similar colours), that's really needed! Maybe I'll grow to like it enough even to give up henna (that's no mean feat, I tell you!) :)

ETA: As for pictures, imo the girl in this ad has very beautiful, long dark blonde hair:

I'm thrilled to find a proper name for my hair color! I used to define my hair as "dark golden blondish" "or light golden brownish". Sunlight does wonders on my hair. Especially when I get lighter streaks from sea water + a little sunbathing.
While I am confused about my hair color, people says I'm blonde, probably because that is not really common around here. But an idiot hairdresser has once told me I had the perfect caramel color. (Excuse me, what?!)

Yay! this is my natural color as well. I spent my teenage years using sun-in and then professional highlights. Last December, I dyed my virgin hair a reddish tone. I liked the color, but I'm excited to rock my natural blonette! What a great term, so much better than "dishwater" and "dirty" blonde. OP, or anyone else for that matter, who are those gorgeous models with the blonette hair in the first post? Lovely.

Hello, dark ash blonde, with some medium ash blonde streaks here! I always liked my color, but wanted to try red, so I hennaed. After a year, I decided to grow it out. My siggy is 1/2 grown out, but that's an old pic. All of the henna is gone now.

So far my favorite term for my color is "cendre", but that would only apply to the ashy hues, I guess.

BeccaAngel One of the "problems" with this color is that in photos it can go from looking brown to blonde... mine even shows up red on webcam sometimes. From what I can tell you definitely would count though.

patchoulilove: The only one from my post that I know the name of is Ruslana Korshunova. She dyed it a bit lighter and cut later on but she started out with maybe knee length hair that could be called "blonette"

Yes! good point! This also applies to blondette skin. My skin is also translucent! I'm not saying my skin is clear. This just means that in different light my skin seems to take on a different tone. I have a spring skin tone which is characterized by those attributes. I don't know about the rest of you but when I go to sophora to try on a new foundation it's frustrating because when I get it home it's either to yellow or makes my skin look dull.

Does any other blondette have these issues?

This seems to be the perfect thread to announce my presence here at lhc. I have been growing my natural dark blond hair out for 1 year and 5 months and I am slowly starting to adore the colour. I love how much more dimension it has against my dyed brown hair. I can't wait for it to be all virgin.

For patchoulilove - I think the first model is Eniko Mihalik and the second is Monika Jagaciak.

I have noticed a lot of new models with this undefinable hair colour lately. So I am just going to spam you all with pictures of some of these models :)

i believe i do, I've been told its lighter in person. pictures don't always get the accurate color of a person's hair, mine always end up looking darker in pictures.

Blonettes UNITE!!!
Thanks for this, I always hated my haircolor because my mom said it was "dishwater blonde". It's taken me 27 years and I don't know how many dye jobs to finally find out that it's actually pretty and flattering.
Looking at all these pictures is awesome. It's a beautiful color, tell the haters (including that voice in your head) to take a leap if they disagree. :)

Oh yay!! I feel so at home seeing this group! :D

When I was little, my hair was a platinum blonde (I think it's the Swedish in me), and over the years, my hair gradually darkened to light blonde, blonde, etc. It took until I was in high school for my hair to finally reach the colour that it is now.

I'm not really sure what colour my hair is, though. On my driver's licence, I have that my hair is blonde, but I personally think it's either a dark blonde, or a very light brown. Different people say different things, but I don't mind going between hair colours ;)

Once I find some more pics, I'll upload them ;) :pumpkin:

This thread makes me feel better about my natural color, too! I'm finally growing it out after dying it a dark red. I then had highlights added in to blend in the red (my stylist thought strawberry blonde would turn my hair pink so she gave me an almost auburn color). So, here we are trying to keep with my natural color. Everyone's photos further illustrates how pretty this color is! :D

It's so odd that so many models have this hair color- I always felt that it made me look plain and very blah- just another unremarkable person in the crowd lol.

I had the intention of growing out my natural hair when I joined LHC- I love all the different colors, but I couldn't resist all the beautiful henna heads- I may grow out my natural color again someday if I ever grow tired of my henna :).

I don't belong here anymore, but here are pictures of my natural color anyways :p because I did love my hair color- just not on me.
*I apologize that most of them are "myspace angled"- nearly all of these were taken pre- LHC

I was going to comment on that too. You'd think in the world of high fashion with all of it's over the top styles, this color, so often considered "drab" by mainstream people, would be the least desired. And yet you see it all the time! I notice that with the combination of white porcelain skin and long, big, wavy hair with this haircolor (like in the last picture of Abbey Lee Kershaw seen on the first page), girls look very Victorian and doll-like which I can see the fashion world wanting very much.

Avril Lavigne was also a great blonette when she first came out:

pic 3 (http://fashionista.com/images/Avril_Lavigne_resimleri_masast_duvar_katlar_poster leri_2.jpg)

It's funny how when I see these models and singers go platinum and I think, 'oh that's so sad, their hair before was so pretty.' But how many of us have done that exact same thing?! :) And I totally understand that most of us started out as platinum blondes and turned darker over the years, so we think we should get it back. I think it most often does look good, but not as good as the original hair color. I'm not sure why though because I feel like our complexions or skin tone don't change over the years so it's not as if we can't pull it off like before. I guess it's just seeing the difference on someone other than myself makes me realize how more original and rare someone looks as a blonette.

Oh and BeccaAngel your natural hair color in the first picture does fall into the blonette category to me, it matches many of the pictures we have posted here. My hair also captures darker in pictures than it is sometimes.

This is definitely my natural haircolor, although now it is deep burgundy from henna.

I always wanted to like my hair, but in the icky, cloudy weather we have here most of the year it just looks like a nasty, mousy gray color. :/

For me, being a blonette was hard in the past. I am the only one in our family with such hair colour - everyone else has very dark and straight brown hair . So, until I was 5 years old, everyone was fascinated by my platinum curly hair, but when I got older, my hair became darker and straighter to the point that I had to listen to remarks like: your hair is so weird, it's not brown, it's not blonde, it's not straight, it's not curly.

So ofcourse, when I was 15 it was quite normal to start colouring my hair. First blonde, then (after few years) orange, and then dark red. And because it wasn't curly nor straight, I straightened it with a flatiron. And all that time I was sooo unhappy with my hair, because it was damaged and I just could not grew it long. When I was 25, I had enough. And my boyfriend told that he was sad because we've been together for 8 years then and he didn't even knew the true colour of my hair. He was the first one to encourage me to stop colouring. So now, two years later, I am a proud blondette. While growing out my hair I had to listen to some nasty remarks (like: Omg, your roots are showing/are getting sooo long!, "Do you need some money to go to the hairdresser?", "So young and already grey."), but not anymore. I realised that my natural hair colour is "mousy" or "greyish" only when it's short - when it got longer, it became lighter and the grey in it turned into golden shine. So now, as long as I wear it long, everyone is fascinated by it (including me). But if I cut it short, they say it's grey or mousy etc. Luckily, I love long hair and would never ever cut it again :)

I belong here too. I was very blonde and blue eyed as a child and then transitioned into dark blonde with hints of mahogany as an adult. I am now growing out medium to dark brown dye in an attempt to re-create that look. I absolutely love it and the way it flatters the skin.

^I agree. It is strange how many models have it compared to people day to day on the street.

Dont think its that strange. Changing ones hair color is the easiest thing to change if your not happy about ur looks, easier than losing a lot of weight or something. When I used to dye my hair, I was very insecure, thinking that guys would like me more if I had that bleached blonde look, or long dark chocolate brown hair. I was always trying to lose weight, always been a little chubby, but that wasn't as easy as just buying a box dye and change my look completely... :) Models, I think, know they look good, "even" with their blonette color. You know what I mean ? (not english, trying my best not to come off wrong)

*Not saying that everyone who dyes their hair is insecure or has low self esteem. But I do believe thats the case sometimes... Was with me at least :)

This thread has motivated me to try and take some good hair photos.

I love my color, but it gets a little confusing whenever I have to fill out a form or something with my hair color and never know whether to put blond or brown.... generally it turns into a discussion with everyone close by discussing what color it is. Also doesn't help that my eyes are a hazel that isn't green, isn't brown, isn't blue, just a little bit of everything.

Charlotte and xoxophelia- I have read that many fashion models have this color hair because the clothing designers do not want anyone to focus on the model's hair but on the clothes.

^ I would think many models have this color because if you notice, most models in high fashion do not have noticably dyed hair. It hasn't always been the case but I think the popular street hairstyles are seen as a bit "cheap" in comparison. Now more than ever I think the color is somewhat in vogue because of its subtle sophistication. It compliments a lot of the looks that are also popular.

My hair's like this: blonde, ginger and brown all at once. I like the multitonality in itself, but I think the dark, ashy brown at the roots is the most flattering colour for my face, so I've considered darkening it in the past, and even tried tea rinses, though they didn't seem to do much.

I am a blonette! As a child, my hair was very light, but it has darkened over the years. In winter, it is almost brown. In summer, it gets a lot of nice golden honey colored highlights. For a year or so, I dyed it strawberry blonde and henna red, but have since gone back to all-natural. I like my hair color, it's perfect.

I am definitely in this thread. I have hair that changes color depending on the light, the time of year and whether or not I wear it down. Down most everyone agrees I have dark blonde/golden blonde hair, but when i wear it up it looks almost light brown, and if you actually examine it there's red all through, too. In warm yellow light I can look red but I'm sun high-lighted right now so the red has been highlighted out mostly. I've been trying to learn to like my hair as it is and not wish it would just pick a color. Hehe.

I belong in this thread, too. The next person who refers to my hair as dirty blonde, dishwater, or even mousey gets a lecture. Possibly with a slideshow proving that my hair color doesn't match that of a rodent's fur or of dishwater and that calling someone's hair dirty is rude. I do see why so many people with hair like mine dye it, though. Fluorescent lighting, already evil for so many other reasons, does tend to make it look flat.

You guys, I love this thread.

I love this forum, actually. I've been converted, in about 6 months, from totally hating my natural hair colour, no ifs not buts no regrets, to desperately wishing for it to grow out faster :)

I'm the grayest, ashiest blonette - no warmth at all in my hair's tone. I used to hate this, but now I think my hair colour will be really unusual!

The inspirational photos are awesome. I'm bookmarking them for any days where I feel a bit blah about not having darker hair (I'm a cool winter - think liv tyler - and therefore I suit her haircolour lots. But I have discovered that dyeing my hair takes me from a solid, slightly crazy ii i to a ii, which is perfectly okay at the shorter lengths I've had, but not good at all when I'd like to get to classic!)

More blonette models, pls?

Today I was complimented on the "longness" of my hair and my "golden" color. These were both from boys who I think don't use golden in the same terms as girls do (they don't seem to understand the difference between ash, neutral, warm- I've tried explaining... doesn't work), but looking at gold how it actually is- it's a very blondette color. So I did an image search on google and here's some more pics that I loved:

Many people describe it as "dull", "drab", "lifeless", "icky", etc., and I couldn't disagree more. Sure, it doesn't scream "look at me, I'm here" in a crowd, and it is often unnoticed. That's because it is an understated beauty, you see. It is appriciated only by those who notice beauty even in its simplest forms - those who apprieciate the pale violet lilacs growing amidst the vibrant tigerlilies, fuchias, and sunflowers.
It also seems to fit my personality, because as an artist, I am always seeing the simple beauties in life that many people are blinde to. I am also very quite and gentle, which goes along with my soft, muted hair color. As it is a very cool and misunderstood color, I feel it evokes an ambience of mystery. The phrase "snow queen" comes to mind when I see this color.

Your hair is totally beautiful!

Anyway, here are some pics:

Go for it!! So glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about all those derogatory terms! :)
I'm always saying the same thing, like "dirty" often being used as some kind of descriptive term, when it's not...
(And completely agree about fluorescent lighting as well, yuck...)

eta: This in my opinion must be one of the most beautiful descriptions of this hair colour
(from this thread http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=76524) :

I'm glad I found this site right after I found a henna site and before I put an order in. I think I would like henna hair, for the shine and color, but after reading what it takes to properly maintain it and the trouble with it darkening over repeated applications, I'm going to learn to like what I have instead.

For a good while I dyed my hair various shades of red, and I liked being a redhead, but I never liked keeping up with it. Natural dyes or six week rinse-outs require too much maintenance and I haven't touched permanent box dye since I found out alternatives existed twenty years ago. Not so much because I knew how damaging they are to hair, I'm just afraid of commitment!

Why "idiot" hairdresser?? I think caramel is a lovely term to describe your hair!

Although your "no sun" hair is the color I've always wanted. I think it's gorgeous. :D

Thank you very much
And why I'm angry at the hairdresser? Because maybe nearly half of the women population in my country dyes their hair to "caramel", which looks ridiculous on their relatively darker skin. So the hairdressers modify the color to somewhat minimize that awful color combination by inventing a new caramel shade (like so (http://www.kadinforum.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/18299_b-200x188.jpg)), which I really hate. And that was the caramel the hairdresser was talking about.

I like that description too (although, haha, my favorite flowers are tiger lilies and sunflowers!!).

I will say two things I like about my hair, though:
-Highlights and the sun suit it very well (I recently started to use a lightening spray, though it is still pretty close to natural. I like the results a lot!)
-With my coloring, hair included, I can wear just about any color I want

I also like "caramel" as a description for the warmer blonette shades. I call my natural color "cendre"

I don't like those terms either. It makes my hair sound so...ugly! I used to think my hair color was kind of boring, and wished it was a lighter blonde or red, or a "real" color! But I think it's a beautiful color, because it changes with the seasons and just looks the best on me!

Well, I must admit I love henna, that's just my dilemma :) I'd like to grow out my natural dark blonde, if even to enjoy it while I still have it, before I start getting any grey (although looking at my genes, i.e. when women in my family have started to go grey, that shouldn't happen anytime soon); but on the other hand, I love henna & being a redhead so much that I don't know how I'd manage without it for long :) (I even love the henna upkeep, I kid you not!) Also I'm not convinced my natural colour suits me better than henna, although I know it should... I did actually grow out my natural for almost two years, but then succumbed to henna; it's so hard to resist, it doesn't even damage your hair like other dyes, on the contrary, so why fight it, you know what I mean?

I just get so upset when people use those kind of names for my natural colour, as they're one of the reasons I've dyed my hair for most of my life - who wants to have "mousy" or "dirty" hair... :(
And of course, it is my natural colour, so I'll defend it to the end, even if I'd currently be another colour

I agree. My husband says my hair is mousy brown, but hairdressers all agree it's not dark enough to be fully classified as even the lightest brown. They also say it's a bit darker than their swatch for dark blonde though. But really, the little card holds what? 5 shades of blonde? I have more than five shades of blond on my head alone, let alone all the people in the world. Oh well.

I always like charts that distinguish between light brown and dark blonde (dark blonde being 6 and 5 being light brown) because, even though they appear very similar in level of darkness, the dark blonde will have a lack of pigments that the light brown has. If you look at some of the hair dye box colors or at this chart (http://www.skincaretalk.com/hair-care-talk/10791-what-your-natural-hair-color.html) you can see that they look almost identical, but with the dark blonde having more of a yellowish tone to it. It's my personal opinion, not scientific nor proven but, if you were blonde growing up, you cannot turn truly brown-haired no matter how dark your hair gets. I have seen people where their hair was lighter than someone who had dark blonde, yet it was still brown because of the pigmentation in it.

On that chart I'm an easy dark blonde. Parts of my hair (the temples mostly) are an easy light blonde too. I had blond hair as a child, but in school photos it looks brown sometimes- I think it was the lighting. In the sun I was always very blonde. I have chameleon hair!

[QUOTE=UP Lisa;1838034]According to that chart, I am a Medium Blonde.:happydance:

The way it usually goes is:
level 12= white blonde
level 11= platinum
level 10= lightest natural blonde
level 9= very light blonde
level 8= light blonde
level 7= medium blonde
level 6= dark blonde
level 5= light brown
level 4= medium brown
level 3= dark brown
level 2= darkest brown
level 1= black

There are some charts however that call level 7 dark blonde and level 6 light brown. And to be honest, in the real world, that's what people usually consider those levels (actually there was just a thread recently where quite a few people considered a girl with level 7-8 golden blonde hair to be light brown!). So, just be prepared that not everyone will agree on the color, but who cares because you know. :)

That is an interesting theory. :) It does confuse me, though, because my DBF had very blond hair into his toddler years, but it quickly changed to a dark, one shade below soft black black color (except for one very ashy blond streak on his temple). My dad, on the other hand, was born with dark hair (I took after him, since I was born brunette also but not as dark) and his hair color is very similar to my DBF. There are pictures that show both of their hair colors in my albums if you want to take a look.

I don't want to offend you or say you're wrong or anything, I just thought I'd throw that out there since I think it's fascinating to think about. Plus, I can get some giggles about DBF possibly being a technical blond since it gives me another reason to tease him.

springlets I agree with you. Maybe not for the people who were mentioned who are only blonde as a young toddler but in my case it was never disputed if I was "blonde" until I was maybe 16. I had platinum hair and then a honey blonde and then a sandy blonde up until then. Even before I colored my hair darker, people considered me blonde with the random person coming up to tell me I was brunette (so I never would buy those shirts that said brunette this or "blondes have more fun"). Actually, around 16 is when I started to use the term blonette for my hair. The reason? I thought it would be funny to take some of the letters off of the brunette/blonde shirts, merge them, and make my own XD

Even though my natural can be considered brown, it has a golden tone natural brunettes don't have. The flickers of light that shine are literally gold colored. And, it turns blonde-blonde from the sun.

I agree there is a definite difference in color even when there is not a difference in shade between my "brown" blonette and a natural brunette.

I'm with you girls on the light brown/dark blonde distinction. I'm currently using Tints of Nature Dark Blonde (;evel 6) and compared to the light brown (which is really medium brown) which is the level 5, the mixture you use is less organgey and more yellowey. The effect can be quite similar but there is less warmth in the basic shade. I grew up with ash blonde hair that became very dark blonde but it was given warmth by some strands which were mahogany red coloured. Just enough to give it an ever so slightly reddish cast. I now suit chestnut brown but can't go too warm and or dark blonde. My natural hair is full of grey so I am working out what next...

I have to agree, it's actually really brassy, not what I'd think of as caramel at all. Your hair, Naphthylamine, doesn't look a thing like that. Maybe the hairdresser just happened to realize what caramel actually should look like after she saw your hair!

Oh no I didn't mean to imply that anyone who was blonde when they were young automatically means they are always blonde no matter what. My brother was the same in that he had platinum hair when a toddler but quickly after turned to a medium brown. I meant for the people who had very light blonde hair that stayed that way until they were reasonably older; I usually say puberty but there are quite a few people who darken earlier or later. And if their hair matches a level 3 or 4, of course they're not blonde; I think where people get confused is when they are a level 6 or 7 because regular people sometimes consider them brown but they are technically blonde from a hairdresser's standpoint. :)

I agree with people here on the blonde vs brown thing. Brown hair has warm/reddish undertones (even the ashier shades) whereas blonde has only yellow ones.

My hair is an extreme example of this - it lightens very easily to a shockingly cool yellow-gold tone, and has absolutely zero warm tones whatsoever, so it's not brown. However...it definitely looks brown to most people's eyes. I'm pretty sure my hair is the darkest that "ash blonde" hair can physically get, with zero warm tones...the effect being that my hair is actually a kindof slate grey colour.

I used to hate it utterly, but I have never seen anyone with this haircolour (even the photos on this thread are all too warm-toned), so I have decided that it is unique and cool :)

When I had my natural colour someone told me I had hair like the ashes of a fire

As I get more growth (I'm now growing out lighter more identifiable blonde dye) I'll post here. But I'm definitely blonde even if people think I'm brunette (I'm actually a level 8  )

My mother has hair like this - to me, it actually looks like a deep olive green/gray color.

Yay! I am not alone!

Though I actually see more bluish tones in my roots than an olive green...but it can look a bit like that under some lights. Swamp monster!

When my mom's hair fell out due to chemo, I searched high and low for an eyebrow pencil that would match, but no one made a pencil ashy enough. Finally I just bought olive green eye liner and it looked great as eyebrows!

Be prepared that it might change as you get older - as a child, my hair was only cool-toned, but it keeps getting warmer and warmer, and now it is definitely gold. My daughter's hair is the fairest strawburn, though laypeople would just call her blonde.

That seems to be what's happening to me. While my length looks pretty gold, my roots look cooler and ashier. It could just be because I'm going grey, though.

Nope! Not me, and I don't see why ash should come more from old follicles than gold. Is there some reason why this should be the case?

I have four kids, and my hair has changed with each child, becoming progressively more golden and wavy and now curly just in the nape area!

My hair can turn up all kinds of different colors. :)

I was watching The Office last night and saw something. It's probably not the most flattering example but, Jim and Dwight have practically the same hair level but Jim's is brown and Dwight's is technically blonde. You can see it has that lack of pigments that Jim's has.

I have noticed a similar thing with the guy that plays Detective Ryan on Castle.. Under the florescents he looks brown haired, but when he's outside he looks blonde. It's led to a few arguments over what hair colour he has! (And yet, in the KFC commercial, he's completely blonde looking!)

Yes, Michael C. Hall (from Dexter) also has this kind of hair where in shadow or artificial light it will look brown but in sunlight it looks blonde. That is why level 6 is still a blonde color. :)

In Austria it´s called ash blond. I didn´t like the name and also not the colour of my hair. So i dyed my hair many years in a lot of other colours, but now I know none of them is so beautyful like ours. When it´s getting darker blond in winter and brightens up in Sommer.

Okay, I had a minor misunderstanding there. Thank you for clearing that up. :flower:

Interesting...the opposite seems to be happening to me. I was blonde as a kid, and it was a reasonably warm blonde - not red, but a neutral warmish gold. Then it went to a cool gold, then got darker and ashier.

In fact...examining my roots, I'd say they are even ashier than they were when I last saw my natural hair colour, however it was a long time ago.

I've noticed that some people with this haircolour find that the roots are darker and ashier than the length - perhaps sunbleaching, or something. Am I the only one who would much rather prevent this?

When I was younger, the growth during fall/winter/spring was always much ashier than the length, leaving a noticeable line; then the sun would warm it up. This doesn't happen anymore - it is always gold.

Isn't it weird that we have this opposite hair color lifetime trend? Hair is weird.

I'd rather prevent it, too. I think the darker, ashier colour of the roots suits me better than the ginger and blonde highlights. I've just found it a pain in the past because I used to do a lot of swimming outdoors in the summer, and it bleached really easily.

I consider my hair to be dark blonde, and I think I belong in this thread. Great thread by the way, I don't know how I missed it! :D Very beautiful hair in all the pictures. Very motivational.

Like many others I was a light blonde as a kid and it darkened to an ashier shade. I have been dyeing since the age of 13 (not because I didn't like my color, just because it was fun) and I don't think my hair had finished darkening by then so I have actually never seen my natural color on my whole head being the color it is now. I am growing it out though and since I started dyeing it has never been this long grown out. The roots are down to the bottom of my ears now. I don't think I will ever dye my hair again. I absolutely LOVE my natural color now and how many variations can be found in different light. I don't have to choose if I should go darker for the fall or lighter for the summer because I already have a color that can be both light and dark.

It's only the roots that are my natural color. Ears down is highlighted. Maybe it appears lighter anyway? But like typical hair of this color it appears dark sometimes and light sometimes. Also I am in Sweden and many in the population have light hair color and complexion, so my color is definitely considered dark blonde here. This dark blonde is also the most common color to have here as an adult, but most women dye it. It's VERY rare to see someone with totally natural hair of this color. So, I'm a blondette then. It has bugged me a bit since I started growing my own colour out, since it is not really blonde but definitely not brown ether. Here where I live we call it gray as a country road (http://lh5.ggpht.com/-7Dpg8-9szS4/Rp208yeI41I/AAAAAAAAANo/omn4xbmU_ew/P7091026.JPG) as in a road without an asphalt. Very flattering, but better than dishwater... :D

I already hate myself for saying this, but for me it seems like a half of the people in this topic actually has brown hair. I said hate, because I know it is not true! I know how hard it is to take a photo of blondette hair, since the colour seems to change every minute. My hair is almost white in some lighting, but sometimes it looks like dark brown. I think the reason for this is that a blondette hair often is quite transparent, so the light goes trough the hair causing it to change the colour depending on the type of the light.

It also seems that blondette hair tends to change color over years as others have stated. When I was born I had quite dark brown hair which soon got lighter and I had blonde hair till high school. Since then it has got ashier and darker. My mother's hair was the same, and now she has dark ashy brown hair, so it seems that my hair will go naturally dark too as I get older.

I need to try to get a more accurate picture of my natural hair color now that my roots are long enough. I was born with blonde hair and then sometime after I was ten it darkened to the "not light enough to be blonde, not dark enough to be brown" color. And I do have a lot of red strands in my hair so in some lights it looks auburn.

For anyone in this thread who likes to wear colored hair toys, how did you decide what colors would look good in your hair? Did you just base it off what color clothes look good on you?

I think "maantie" in general is really an any road that is outside the city area, but when talking about that hair colour it refers to a non-asphalted one (asphalt being black). I've always thought that "maantienharmaa" is actually quite accurate, at least when talking about my hair. It's the colour of dirt and sand. :p

Well, I tend to wear a lot of silver (studded belt, studded wrist band etc) so I got a hairstick that was silver. Between silver and gold though I think gold maybe looks best in my hair since it has golden highlights.

As for colors, I think it depends on the rest of your coloring. Some that I think look good: aqua, periwinkle, pastel pinks, pastel blues, pastel greens (etc), lilac, maybe kelly green, turquoise. Other colors might depend on how much of a red tone your hair has. But the ones listed I think would look good on many blonettes

There is the whole issue of people not knowing what to call it and women are often classified by their hair color (a trend I find to be a bit disturbing to be honest). BUT I have never had somebody tell me my hair color is ugly or average.

Perhaps because we have so many people from different countries and are also racially diverse. Although, I don't know that racial breakdowns for Finland.

I find this strangely comforting. But I'm a long way from Finland, and have dual British/US citizenship. Good to know my hair is normal somewhere. :)

Jelena!! :D Hiiiiii and welcome to LHC. I saw your photos from before and thought your hair was really pretty. I also love the whole Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painting type look you have going on in the pictures ^_^'

I think we have a somewhat similar hair color (when mine grows out.. I currently have faded dye below my shoulders that is darker) except that my hair has parts that get more blonde and parts that are also darker. So, I love seeing your photos because it makes me still have the will to put up with slowly growing out the dye.

This is the best example of my virgin color because it is in sunlight and with a real camera without flash (it was also the most recent)

This dark blonde is also the most common color to have here as an adult, but most women dye it. It's VERY rare to see someone with totally natural hair of this color. But I see many guys sporting it. :)

Blonette seems to be the most common hair colour in Finland so no suprise to find fellow Finns in this topic.

I also find this comforting since I hear so much about how natural light platinum blonde hair is so common to see in Scandinavia/Northern Europe. When I was in Germany, I certainly saw a handful of people with that color and I could tell it was natural, but for the most part, I saw women with highlights who would have naturally had our blondette color.

So, I'm curious: how many of us have all/most of our individual hairs colored blondette, and how many of us have a mix of blonde and brunette hairs? Because I have (almost?) no individual hairs that are blondette. They're all either golden blonde or dark brown, with a few other scattered around randomly.

My hair is a mixture of light blonde strands, light and dark brown strands, some red strands, a few black strands, and a couple of gray strands. I guess in my case it's the mixture that gives the blonette color rather than each strand being the blonette color.

I'm joining the blonette party quite late but what do you think, do I qualify?

This is taken indoors without flash.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7330&pictureid=117728

With flash it's a lot more lighter, like this:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7330&pictureid=117730

I think the one taken without flash is quite close to the truth, at least at this time of the year...

Mannaz: Oh my, your hair colour in the photo without a flash is exact same as mine! And suprisingly (or not so suprisingly...) you're a Finn, too. As it was just said, it clearly is a common hair colour around here, even though most people dye it darker or lighter nowadays. :D So definitely qualify. Do you have some red in your hair or is that just the flash?

I also find this comforting since I hear so much about how natural light platinum blonde hair is so common to see in Scandinavia/Northern Europe. When I was in Germany, I certainly saw a handful of people with that color and I could tell it was natural, but for the most part, I saw women with highlights who would have naturally had our blondette color.
In my experience very light blonde is most common in Sweden and Norway, but it's not rare in other Nordic countries ether. This (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Light_hair_coloration_map.png) is a good map that shows where blonde hair colour is most common, the brightest yellow means that over 80% of the population has light hair, orange over 50%. I think that you could read the map also so that the yellow area has most platinum blondes, orange blonettes, light brown most light brunettes and so on. So a typical German definitely have darker hair than a typical Finn or Swede, but it is not impossible to see a German with platinum hair nor a Finn with dark brown. :)

I think that because light hair is so common here in Finland, Finns tend to think the term "blonde" much narrower than in some other countries. For most people here even dark blonde is counted as a brunette. That makes living as a blonette even harder, since for a Finn everything that isn't platinum is not really blonde. :D

Mannaz

sre: I guess we're hair twins then, at least color-wise! It's funny how most people in Finland who have this kind of color don't like it on themselves, but ever since I've let my color grow I've gotten a lot of compliments of the color, and also a lot of "is that your natural color" questions... Maybe it looks too natural to be natural, I don't know...

There are some red hints in my hair, although maybe not as much as in the other photo. In some lights it looks very golden, but like a dark gold... I think the ACV has brought it up a litlle more.

BTW, was it in this thread where someone said she's going to call her hair rainbow-blonde? I thought that was brilliant!

I have seen that map before and was going to link it in this thread before. :) Finland is actually supposed to have the most blondes (and that is supported by the map I think since the light gold area covers more area in Finland than either Sweden or Norway). It's also why they say in the (completely incorrect) Disappearing Blonde Gene theory that the last natural blonde will be born in Finland in the next 200 years. :)

Blonde or blonette is a regular color here, but I think most people dye it or highlight it. (Light/Medium) brown is also very common though.

My hair is what you would traditionally call "dishwater" blonde. I have dyed it, highlighted it, but now I am trying to get back to a natural base color although I will probably continue to highlight it.
In most pictures my hair looks quite dark or red, but I have a few that show my hair fairly well :

I already hate myself for saying this, but for me it seems like a half of the people in this topic actually has brown hair. I said hate, because I know it is not true! I know how hard it is to take a photo of blondette hair, since the colour seems to change every minute. My hair is almost white in some lighting, but sometimes it looks like dark brown. I think the reason for this is that a blondette hair often is quite transparent, so the light goes trough the hair causing it to change the colour depending on the type of the light.

Exactly this! My signature shows my hair in different lights. It can look dark brown or white blonde. It's sort of frustrating how light-dependent it is, but at the same time it makes it special.

Thanks! It's a wave braid, from this youTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujDz_iCPmJ0 and you're right - you just section your hair into two small pieces and one large, and do an English braid. She puffs out the big section afterwards, which looks neat as well (my hair usually can't keep that shape for long though, as it's too smooth).

Pure laziness.
My hair grows at least an inch a month and the roots would look awful within a couple weeks. When I was dying my hair copper red, the ashy roots looked TERRIBLE by week two. I just couldn't take it anymore. With highlights, I can ignore them for months and they look fine. The upkeep is minimal.

Hey, I'd like to join the club!

I'm growing out the last of my dyed hair and I can't wait to trim it off, I've only got a couple inches to go. My natural hair color is a very dark ash blonde but I've been dying it since I was 14 because it was.. the thing to do. It's been every color they can put in a box. I had fun with it but I'm done...

I really admire the color of my daughter's hair and I was remarking to my Mom that I wished my hair was that color. She said to me, "You know that is your natural hair color. I don't know why you ever dyed it." I don't know why it didn't occur to me before! There is this idea in the media if you pay attention to fashion that hair cannot be pretty unless it is dyed. It's just pure rubbish... it makes no sense.

Hair salons want to make money. :lipssealed: It's always about marketing.

There are some salons/stylists that aren't like that, though..... my stylist has told me that the way I've been dying my hair at home (via lightening spray) looks very nice and well-blended/natural.

I love this color on other women, and I always give compliments when I see girls who didn't dye their hair, and they have some shade of blonette. I am starting to learn to embrace it. :)

Thank you for making such a thread! :D
It is so easy to get discouraged with the natural colour of our own hair when all around us people with true blonde, brunette, and red hair coloured hair are praised for it. It is easy to give in to all society's ideas of dyeing hair to make it more desirable, that a "mutt" colour is dull and banal - not saying that people who DO dye their hair are ashamed, but more often than not we colour our hair to make it "better" - this is coming from someone who has not had her true colours showing for five years! Now, I am finally coming to love my hair how it is and not listen to people who tell me otherwise! This is for Blonette Pride! We have beautiful, unique, vibrant colour and we need not be ashamed!
Go ALL of you! :D
