I'm joining this thread! July 1st will be my 8 months of growing out henna, and I already have quite a lot of regrowth. Enough to make me seem fully natural from the front when my hair is all up.

This is my natural color in professional photos, as close to the real life as it gets. (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36994&d=1558636474) I miss it a lot and regret hennaing.

It's all in the language, I think. There is a separate word for blonette in Russian, it's rusy (roo-syi). This word is an umbrella term for everything that's not platinum blonde but is too light to be considered brunette. So in my head this color does have an identity, but this identity is very, how do I say it? Very Russian (because words rusy and Russia have the same root), and it still doesn't stop it from being called mousy and boring. Russian ladies bleach their manes like there's no tomorrow, or at least they used to before "rusy" became trendy. When it happened we just thought that the world of high fashion finally accepted something natural. Younger girls accept their natural color more and more often, but there are still too many women who bleach.

Yeah, English is really missing an equivalent.

Joules, land of vodka, bears and winters in your signature :)
I also heard of a word ruse, where the explanation was also that the term came from Russia, associated to light hair with red shine, like ginger or so.

I think rusy is more golden tones. Cooler dark strawberry blonde might be called it as well, but since rusy is so abundant, we are quick to label anything with reddish tones as ginger, because they really stand out from the sea of ashy-light-brown/rusy

Btw, who is your famous blonette? Btw, is there any celebrity blonette that doesn't dye their hair?

I don't know any blonette celebrity but back when I stopped coloring my hair, I really liked this model and her hair color, I thought it's the perfect golden/neutral blonette with natural highlights

I would only consider those darker haired models to be true blonettes. The lighter ones are simply dark blondes imo.

Begemot
June 20th, 2019, 12:47 PM
Yeah understandable, I'm not claiming that my examples are the one true definition of blonette :) Those of us who live places where there's more natural light blondes might be a bit more strict about what is considered blonde or blonette. I believe the darker examples I posted here would be considered just brunettes by most (at least where I live).

edit. and actually looking again the previous pictures I posted, many/most of them would be probably considered brunettes too :D

Yeah that makes sense. They’d be considered brunette/light brown where I am too. There aren’t a ton of natural light blondes where I am, but enough people bleach their hair to skew perception anyway. Is the hair level chart different where you are too? I try to use that as my guide.

Begemot
June 20th, 2019, 01:14 PM
Hmm I haven't seen a hair level chart in years but I doubt it's different. I think level 7 is considered light brown in some places and dark blonde in others but not sure. Someone who knows more about those should step in here :D

dancedance
June 20th, 2019, 01:24 PM
The thing is that even hair level charts can show a lighter color for level 7 or 6 depending on who made it. It’s an arbitrary distinction between light brown and dark blonde. I always considered myself dark blonde, but I realized at some point that others consider me light brunette. I asked a guy once what he thought, and he said, “You have light brown hair, just like me!” I looked at him super confused and went, “But... you’re blond!” That threw him for a loop lol!

I do, for the most part. I have little bits of bleach at my ends, an inch here, two inches there, while other pieces are bleach-free. It is such a relief to be almost done with it, but I’m not in a rush to cut it off now. I still get the occasional half inch trim, about once every six months, which allows me to make progress towards virgin waist both in terms of length and color.

So we're in the same boat :) I also have some highlights left and haven't felt like bleaching lately (and I doubt I'll ever again dye my hair darker). Just feeling more low maintenance I guess.

I was almost white blonde as a child and it gradually darkened with age. Now I have mainly thin blondish strands but I find a few very brown strands mixed in which are also noticeably thicker than my other strands. Both of my parents, my 3 siblings and all 4 of my grand parents are all brown/brunette ranging from medium to dark brown. I’m not sure about all of my great grand parents because all of their photos are black and white. I’ll have to ask. Not sure where I got the blonde hair from.

HA! First post and this is the first thread I clicked on. I have "iridescent light mouse brown" and "multitonal dark ash blonde"...simultaneoulsy. It changes colour as I walk across the room, depending on how the light hits it. It is the "hazel" of hair colours. It's even more spectacular and everchanging now that white streaks are appearing.

This is so interesting and poignant that you brought this up! My husband, who’s Russian, remarked the other day as I was bemoaning the color of my hair, that he liked my real color and said “it’s rusy but a little more golden”. I’d never heard the term before but when he explained it I understood immediately. Having met in Russia where I lived for awhile and travel back to visit his family about once a year, I’ve always loved how so many women/girls (the ones who haven’t bleached their hair to iced platinum as you so correctly pointed out) have this” rusy/blonette” color and seem to totally embrace it. I always admired the color and now realizing that I myself have had my whole adult life but felt I always needed to be blonder for some silly reason, makes me happy but also annoyed with myself. It truly is a gorgeous muti-shade and multi-tonal “color”.
Only recently, I’ve decided to grow out my hair to its natural shade. I’m at that difficult stage right now, though, of growing out old highlights that make ones virgin hair, even blonde-ish hair, look a lot darker than reality.
I REALLY should’ve listened to my mother years ago when she said “Anna, don’t touch your hair. Women pay hundreds of dollars for highlights you have for free. LOL. She was so right.
Yay for rusy/blondette/multi-dimensional chameleon gorgeous hair that even changes with the seasonal colors!

Messyhair95 I love the term roosy are just previously described. You match that well. You have a pretty but startling color. It is beautiful. My hair under the sun brightened surface has many of your characteristics but not as pretty red as yours. Some lights it looks dirty, and others, it looks so pretty. I have come to enjoy my hair more, ironically, due to the grey coming in as I age. People are calling it my 'highlights'. The roosy color picks up what could be defeating color (..."argh.. I'm turning grey"...) and gives it, instead, a pretty brightness. It is fun to begin to appreciate what you have rather than feeling frustrated for what you don't have. I've been rambling a bit but hopefully my meaning come through clearly.

I have wavy hair, and I think it generally does better with curly-style hair care. But it's also light (somewhere between blonette and regular blond, depending on the lighting) and no-poo and such is a struggle for me because my color doesn't hide the oil the way it would if it were darker. Help?

What a lovely thread :) its making me miss my natural colour now :( my natural colour has been described as "bringer" (blonde and ginger) and brownde (brown and blonde)... it used to be a yellow blonde when I was a child and auburn when I was a toddler and when I hit teenage year and adulthood it went to a dark blonde with lighter highlights. But sometimes when it hits the light right, you can see reddish tones. However I thought it looked pretty dull most of the time (especially when comparing it to all the coloured hair out there now) so I coloured it red... this is a really beautiful thread, though, and I appreciate it a lot. Thanks.

Ah I'm also so happy for finding this thread! I just recently decided to start growing out henna and definitely need some inspiration as my roots are looking very dull and grey against the copper...I'm actually not sure what my hair colour even is these days as I haven't fully seen it in 10 years! I used to be platinum blonde as a child and then it gradually darkened to golden blonde and that's when I started bleaching it. I recently started letting my hair do what it wants and be wavy so thought why not also try to learn to appreciate the colour :-D

I love this thread. You all have such beautiful hair and unique shades of color. It's encouraging me to work my way back to my natural color, the process for which might take me a few years. :knit: I consider myself a former blonette because in certain lighting, people would call me a light brunette (ie all of my boyfriends past and present!), but in others I was quite "blonde".

Here is a photo from earlier this year. My natural color is a warm mix of red, brunette, and blonde. I naturally get highlights when I'm outdoors a lot but when this was taken, I lived in Boston and the winters there seem to last 8 months! LOL! Artificial highlights were my friend. You can see how dark my hair was below in my bedroom lighting, and then how light it could be in my avatar picture. I really miss being more of a blonette! Not to mention that length...Back to square one.

Your hair looks blonde to me :o There is a thread for blondes as well somewhere, it was a while ago it was active. Blonette is more a term for those that are right around the border between blonde and brown.

honeybee93, your hair looks blonde to me in that older photo as well (even just looking at the darker portions), maybe more medium blonde than light as in your profile photo, but still blonde.

It's weird how my perception of blonde and brown has changed since I got a wider view of what hair colours are. But I don't blame my old self, it's hard to know what blonde is when you live in a place where people only mean light blonde when they talk about blonde hair.

This thread is a fascinating read! I've never heard of the term "blonette" before, but it's very descriptive.

I do still have a question, though. There seems to be a difference of opinion if "blonette" refers specifically to those on the spectrum between blonde and brown, with ashy shades only. Or as the OP said long ago, if "blonette" also includes those with red tints, in the tawny and blonde-brown-red families. I see there's a thread for tawny hair (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=6685), but despite being older than this blonette thread, it's had not nearly as much activity.

Is there a LHC consensus on this? I have my own opinion, but I'm a bit of a new kid! And I am curious, because I think my hair belongs in at least one of these threads; but I'm not sure which.

Maybe it's because it's the greyish/ashy tint that makes it hard to say whether it's more blonde or brown? I think when hair is clearly leaning towards the golden side, it will more often be classified as blonde, specially apparent in the sun or in certain lights, where ashy hair would look darker?
And about red, maybe it's more because hair with enough red will be whether red or too brown?

I am not the OP, and I can’t speak for everyone, but I do not consider red tints characteristic of blonette hair.

What a great thread!!

My hair definitely fits here! When I was little it was more of a lighter blonde with some red undertones, but it quickly darkened to a more "mousy" (as my grandmother called it.. ugh) colour. I hated it back then, probably because of how many people told me that it was such a shame that it got so dark. So I started bleaching and colouring and I haven't seen my real colour since I was about 11 years old.

I do really love my current copper shade, but it's very damaging to keep up. And I am kind of curious what my natural colour would be like. (Also started caring a lot less about what people think of me.) So I stopped colouring it about 2 months ago. The roots are so interesting!! In some light it is a very dark, ashy shade. In other there are pretty golden bits. I'm so excited to see what it will look like a year from now :D

This thread will definitely help to resist the urge to day. All your pictures are so beautiful!!:crush:

Maybe it's because it's the greyish/ashy tint that makes it hard to say whether it's more blonde or brown? I think when hair is clearly leaning towards the golden side, it will more often be classified as blonde, specially apparent in the sun or in certain lights, where ashy hair would look darker?
And about red, maybe it's more because hair with enough red will be whether red or too brown?

My ulterior motive for asking is that my hair seems to combine all three, blonde, brown, and red. I started as a golden blonde when little, unlike many on this thread who were platinum. (My brother was platinum and is now definitely blonette.) From when it first started darkening it's had red tints, more honey-colored than anything. But it's not enough red to be considered a redhead.

What I definitely agree is that there's a clear continuum between blonde and brown without any red involved. So IMHO, blonette is quite reasonable if restricted to the ashy tints.

I am not the OP, and I can’t speak for everyone, but I do not consider red tints characteristic of blonette hair.

I'm really inclined to agree. Ashy tints versus reddish tints have a complete different kind of beauty; each needs its own appreciation.

Anyone got any tips for managing greasy roots?

Because it's a lighter color than most, when it's wet (with water or oil) it gets darker. And so greasy roots are more viable on lighter hair than darker hair.

I have the same problem, and would love to hear some tips. I feel like mine looks more greasy than it would if it were darker because the color change is so dramatic. Then again, probably few people notice other than myself. I'm trying to embrace the weekly color shift that goes along with my wash cycle. :o For me, BBB brushing makes it look less heavy, but the color stays dark. I haven't tried dry shampoo, but maybe that would help?

Klorane has a Dry Shampoo line that I LOVE. It's not too gritty or fragranced and it gets the job done. Also I water wash every so often to stretch my wash days. I've been training my hair to last longer without washing so I totally know the struggle lol. Also: training hair to last longer between washes is HUGE.

My hair is this color. I appreciate the term "blondette" lol. My hair used to have golden highlights but since I've barely been outside (and also due to natural darkening), it's more brown than blonde most days. When the sun hits it just right it still almost looks golden though.

Hello everyone! I'm new and looking for places where I belong.. I think this describes my hair colour pretty spot on tbh! In the summer my hair is much lighter but in winter it's a definite dark blonde, and when they sun shines on it there's some red/gold tones in there too. I'll post pictures when I'm not a newbie anymore (and work out how), but for now it's lovely to see everyone's beautiful hair, tips and progress!

Your hair looks seriously nice in that picture though, and I can totally relate about missing sunshine highlights :( Hopefully once COVID settles we can all get them back :D

Your hair looks so pretty! I always found fascinating the difference between cultures in what each call "blonde" and "brunette". Your picture above for example, even the darkest part in the shadow are straight out blonde for me. Maybe "dark blonde" in a pinch, but even that sounds like a stretch.

Anyway, lovely hair everyone!

My avatar picture is my virgin hair regrowth in diffused sunlight. I have been growing out bleach for 15 months and rediscovering what shade my hair has become after years of covering it with bleach…. I was a true medium blonde through my twenties, but the underneath that doesn’t see the sun has always been a few shades darker. I suspect without spending hours outside everyday my hair would stay about a level 7 all over. My hair in general seems to have some underlying red tones now when it was true golden before, so I see it as “honey blonde” is it too light to belong here? (Working on learning to take better photos to post when allowed)

My aunt recently came to visit and she mentioned she thought I was a redhead. That was a new one for me.

It might be in part because my grandpa (her dad) was a redhead in his youth, and she was thinking of my hair color in the broader context of hair in our family?

Madeline, I've had the same thing happen to me on rare occasions, and have similar coloration to what your avatar photo shows. I think that sometimes in certain lighting, warm or coppery tones in the blonde can shine through and make it look almost strawberry-blonde. That's the best theory I have for it, because it's probably only been about five times in my life that people have said something like that to me, and then in photos where I saw myself using a particularly warm-toned eyebrow pencil, I noticed it brought out the colors in a different way that did make me look a little ginger. Which totally blew my mind. But I also have family with red hair, and have the pink complexion that typically goes with it, so I guess it makes sense??? Hahahaha

Just took a couple of pics of my hair color. I always have a very difficult time describing my hair color. Is it dark blonde? Is it light brown? Or maybe it is blonette.. Or Tawny?

ETA: I live in the Nordics, where I don't think most people would consider me even dark blonde. I used to be a light blonde as a child though. Also wanted to add that I took the pics in natural daylight, no direct sunlight though. So fairly accurate color depiction. The hair close to my scalp is not quite as warm toned though. It's all virgin hair, no dyes in at least 10 years..

Looking at your hair in a hairdressing sense I'd use 1 quarter level 6.0 and 3 quarter 7.31 or 7.03
Dark Golden Ash blond since it's to light for a level 6 but not light enough for a level 7

I would say this is too dark and rich for blonette, although some might disagree. I think it fits the desciption of tawny though - too dark for dark blonde, but still too light for true brunette. There was a Tawny-thread here a while ago - maybe it's time to resurrect it :D

My hair isn't quite blonde but isn't quite brown, so "blonette" is perfect. It's more mousy and dark in unnatural light, but full sunlight makes it absolutely GOLDEN!!

Maybe that's the determining factor: what level it is. Or maybe how much red is in it. I feel like blonettes are skewed just red enough that they are not exactly blonde but also not strawberry blonde?

Oh wow I never found the levels of blonde until now, I'm definitely a level 7 or 8 depending on the light, if it's bright then my hair looks lighter. I always thought maybe it's a dark blonde but looking at it now against a level 6, my hair isn't that dark. Thanks!

I think if there's some red then it becomes tawny. I kind of think of tawny as within the blonette spectrum, but I'm not sure if everyone agrees.

Yeah the level system is kind of weird. I'm considered a dark blonde according to all my hair dressers, but in my opinion it's light brown. So what many people might think is dark blonde is probably closer to mid blonde. I dunno if I agree with it but that's how they do it.

Well hopefully some others weigh in because I'm sticking to my guns and saying it's mid honey blonde. And very pretty!

Also, regarding the gloomy bathroom color - hair looks different in different lighting conditions. Many artificial light sources don't give off a full spectrum of light, and so the frequencies of light in the bathroom lighting are limited and you get an incomplete picture of the true color (since being able to view objects mean that the light has reflected off the object from a light source). Sunlight is of course a full spectrum of light.

Oh, this thread is the place for me! My hair is one of those hard-to-pinpoint colors. It really depends on the lighting; sunlight makes my hair look gold, but other times it looks reddish or almost brown. It is interesting looking at the individual hairs up close; they are not actually all the same color or thickness. Not sure if anyone else is the same, but I have some course dark brown hairs, some medium red hairs, and a bunch of superfine blond hairs. It makes hair typing myself rather difficult! One thing I've noticed is that my hair color looks different depending on the color I am wearing. Dark green is my favorite color to wear since it seems to bring out the red in my hair, which I absolutely love. Does anyone else notice changes in your hair based on what you wear?

Definitely black makes my hair look super blonde while light colours makes it kinda just blend in. But I know what you mean, I also have very dark brown hairs, red brown hairs and very light blonde hairs, but I think I must have more blondes because it seems I might not belong here.

Oh wow I never found the levels of blonde until now, I'm definitely a level 7 or 8 depending on the light, if it's bright then my hair looks lighter. I always thought maybe it's a dark blonde but looking at it now against a level 6, my hair isn't that dark. Thanks!

Definitely an 8 or 9 in my opinion

Tawny that's how you are describing it to me

I hadn't heard of Tawny before, but I looked it up and it is exactly what I have. Glad to finally have a name for it! Thanks!
