I'm going to start strand testing soon with various ratios of this to conditioner, since I did spot a Chloride in there somewhere and a Sodium something, as well as lots of ingredients that I did not recognize. But the lady at the store said that it didn't dry her hair out when she used it, so I'm hopeful.

other than that it's mostly fatty alcohols, fragrance, colors and water. It smells like bubblegum!!!

does anyone have any advice for me? i have never dyed my hair before, permanent or otherwise :shake:

-okay, so I did some research:

The -parabens are preservatives.

the Tributyl Citrate is a plasticizer which, if i understand it correctly, makes the substance more liquid-y. Wikipedia lists it as a "safer plasticizer."

Sodium benxatriazolyl Butylphenol Sulfonate protects colors from oxidization (source (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient.php?ingred06=705991#))

Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate is an antioxidant

Good luck! I can't help you much with talking about the ingredients, but I hope it turns out great!

You should totally post pics afterwards :)

What color is it?

it's "blue coal" by Raw colors.

i'm doing a strand test now! excited :) I think i'll leave it in over night, I have it in a curler wrapped in plastic so that it will stay wet.

Centrimonium chloride is a cationic surfactant & conditioning agent. Nothing to worry about. Blue coal - does that mean you're going to be joining me in the magical land of blue-black hair? (^(oo)~)

phew- thanks piggy! i'm glad i'm not frying my hair :D

I certainly hope so! I rinsed the test strand this morning and am waiting for it to dry. I can't wait to see it.

If I want to know more about ingredients, I often start at The Environmental Working Group Cosmetics database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ They have a system where the rate it according to known potential human hazards and by how much is published or known about it. They tell you what it's used for and often give a list of products that they know it's used in.

The group can be a teensy bit histrionic occasionally for my taste, but it's a great resource to learn about stuff used in grooming products!

Good luck with your hair - I love the fantasy colours!

Woo hoo! Exciting! :cheese:

3 months ago I was exactly where you are - I'd never dyed my hair in my life, and I'd just picked up a bottle of semi-permanent dye :D Here are some tips you might find handy:

Cover all surfaces that you don't want to get stained before you start!
I like to use an unloved button-front shirt when I'm applying the colour; it's easier to remove later with a head full of dye
Waterproof medical tape at the hairline, especially the nape area, is much more effective and neater than vaseline
Wear gloves in the shower when you're rinsing out the dye, unless you want your nails to get stained!
If you love the colour, CO washing will help it last a lot longer than shampooing, especially if you mix a bit of the dye in with the conditionerDon't forget to post pictures!

it's not a huge difference in this pic; the main difference is that it is slightly darker and the tone is cool and blueish, while my natural color is a warmer brown. My very ends are goldish honey, by the way, and my roots are quite dark.

In this test strand, the dye was applied wet and left in a curler for five or six hours. Right now I have another strand with the dye applied to dry hair. this one is also staying in longer.

oh; and there weren't any adverse effects with the dye. no dryness or anything. :D

I think you'll see a way more impactful colour difference when starting with dry hair. That's how I always apply mine. Exactly what colour are you after? Jet black, cool-toned black, blue-black? (^(oo)^)v

i don't know just yet- right now i'm experimenting. I looove the look of cool toned, jet black hair.... but, i've been told it would make me look washed out and/or pallid. I kind of disagree :| I used taaz.com to see what i would look like with black hair and honestly liked what I saw.

This (http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lsivf7jKdU1r0q028o1_500.jpg), for example.

Second strand test results are in- with photographic evidence!

here is the test strand amongst my natural hair:

and here is a comparison. first strand is natural, second strand is the dye applied to wet hair, and third is the dye applied to dry hair.

I think it'll look quite nice actually, although photos are always so hard to judge. I like when my hair is darker, and although I don't feel "washed out", I do find that it makes whatever dark circles I have under my eyes seem more pronounced. A little cover-up and away I go! Plus - pale skin, dark hair and red lipstick is va-va-va-voom!
Have fun.

I promise I will! I'm waiting for Pirate Weekend at my state's renaissance festival, so that the color can be fresh when I wear my costume. It's the weekend of the 22nd/23rd. I can hardly wait!!
