View Full Version : Hair toy to simulate the "sunglasses effect"

piratejenny
October 9th, 2011, 12:20 PM
This may be an odd question but I'm rather new to hair toys and maybe someone has the perfect answer....

I often wear sunglasses on my head for no other purpose than keeping my hair out of my face. (my hair is only shoulder length at this point and I have some even shorter layers around my face that slip out of every updo). I've tried to hold them back with headbands and scarfs but those make my face look very hard. Sunglasses hold my hair back in a softer, more messy way, if that makes sense...

The thing is I live in a rather rainy place and so the sunglasses sometimes feel a little over the top  plus I'd just like to try something new.

Any recommendations?

I have had this shop favorited for a while but I don't wear many head bands. Perhaps this work work for you? "perfect headband" (http://www.etsy.com/listing/62836271/sarabands-the-perfect-headband-hammered)

Great link, RavenReed! I haven't worn a headband in years, but this looks good. Really good... I might have to consider one.

I just bought one from her shop.. :) I have to wear headbands at work and have endless problems with mine! Either the elastic part at the bottom stretches or the plastic ends dig in and give me headaches. Thanks for the link to the shop Raven!

Ooh, if someone with a lot of hair and a big head gets one, tell me how it works! I haven't been able to wear hard headbands since I was a child. Darn big noggin. Don't get me wrong, the brain that goes with it is nice and all, but ladies' hats and headbands just don't fit! (I'm just shy of 24" circumference as measured for a hat, or 60.5cm.)

I'm also curious about these; I love the sunglasses effect! :D Sadly I have a giant head, so that makes headbands hard to find. I'm hoping the seller might list some in a silvery colour, but if not and you guys have some success, maybe a future custom would be an idea. :)

I looked at these long ago and decided my hair was too thin/fine for them to work for me as intended. I'll be very interested to see people's experiences with them.

Use a regular headband, just pull some of the hair at the hair line to "pouf" it out a bit, or create a part in front of the headband.

I can't wait to hear how this turns out for people -- I loooove the sunglasses effect, I have thick bangs and layers and love how sunglasses let just a few pieces down for light layers and messy hotness. If this is effective, it will be AWESOME. :D

I hope everyone posts pictures when their headbands arrive! I really love the look of these--they have a very earthy or goddessy look. Even without the sunglasses effect, I might be interested in getting one.

I'm so amazed that others do this! I go out of my way to get only sunglasses that won't snag my hair, because they are 'dual use' items! :p
The Etsy shop someone posted looks like a great resource, I'm very tempted. Maybe someone who already bought one can post a picture when it arrives... ;)

Ooh you evil enablers! :p
I'm so getting one of these once I can justify the expense!
I often use my sunglasses as a headband as well. Another thing I've noticed about sunglasses vs headband: when I take the sunglasses down, my hair still looks pretty good. When I take the headband off my hair, specifically the forelock area, looks weird and flat. Hopefully the snazzy headbands will simulate the sunglasses effect for that as well.

I had one, my hair is too fine and falls out. However, SIL who has insanely thick hair and is M/C loves it with all her heart. Looks great on her. That being said, both headbands and sunglasses used as headbands look silly on me.

Mine just arrived!!!:cheese:
I immediately replaced my sunglasses and it feels great. I'm curious how it'll hold up after a few hours. I have a very big, square head :D and often I get headaches from headbands after a while (I usually wear them at home only because most make me look really dorky).

I love the craftmanship, too. The etching is very intricate and pretty. It's easy to bend and adjust, too (even though I didn't need much of that).

I'll report back later today when I'm at home and have had a chance to take a picture.

Has anybody else received their band yet?

So far so good, it is very comfortable if not a little loose on me, but it comes with instructions on how to tighten it up. :) The etching is really pretty and is done really well! I'm tempted to ask for a custom silver butterfly one. :)

OK, here we go.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8696&pictureid=117259

I guess I can't get around admitting that my hair is short . The longest bits at the back touch my shoulders, but there are all kinds of other shorter layers. (I'm growing out a pixie and am in the "akward mullet stage" at present, but that's another story...)

I'm also down with a flu, so my hair isn't exactly at it's best (cleanest) :D

A few more comments about the band itself. I've worn it for a full day now and even though it is a bit heavier than any other band I've tried I have no headache and it sits very comfortably. I also tried it while having my hair tied back and it was a little "slippery" then, so I'm inclined to say that it will probably work better the more hair someone has. My hair is medium thick and I have quite a bit of it, so for me it works well.

The look is as close to sunglasses as I have experienced in a headband but not 100%. Maybe 80%, which is still good :).

It's very easy to adjust and so I think it should be fine for any headshape, square or pointy...

I like it quite a bit :)

Appreciate your pictures and have to tell you it looks amazing in your hair. I have another question, does the sunglass effect last or do you have to keep repositioning the headband? I was hoping to wear this with a braid and updo's and don't want to have to keep fiddling with it to keep the effect. Thanks in advance : )

p.s. The middle sunglass/headband comparison it is very helpful for shape comparison, nice touch!

Haha, there's not much amazing about my hair at this point (weird collection of odd layers, stringy due to dabbeling with WO etc.) but I do appreciate the comment :D.

About the effect lasting, well, I did fiddle with it quite a bit but I also tend to do this with sunglasses and in this case I did extra fiddeling to get the right adjustments... Key is - IMHO - to get it kind of square to get that sunglasses pouf. If someone wanted, it could easily also be made more rounded and used as a "regular" headband...

My head is pretty big and so I tend to overstretch sunglasses which in turn then tend to slip. The band is easier to adjust and so I would think that in the long rund it would stay more "fixed". Hope that helps ;)

Thanks for the information! I think this would probably work with a braid cause I fiddle around with my hair then, not so much when I put it up though. I am getting the itch for a new toy. Ficcare hasn't brought out a new line so I may have to buy one of these instead. I'll keep watching this thread for other pictures and updates. Thanks again!

Oh dear it probably wouldn't suit me either. My hair is thick enough, but sits very flat to my head. Even if I try to encourage pouf, my hair fights back with flatness - probably because it realises how unnatural that looks on me.

Still hoping for more pictures, though! 8)

So do I. But when I've wanted things I didn't think would work, it's always been a mistake to get them. I really wish there were more hair things available in shops, and available to try (not all shops let you) so that we didn't have to take risks over the Net.

One more day into the experiment I can say that I like the band a lot while my hair is open and not so much when tied back. The band's shape really ressembles the shape of glasses pretty closely, so when my hair is tied back there are the "corners" that stand off my head. While this looks natural with sunglasses I find it a bit weird with a band. Hope that makes sense...

Agreed, especially given most are international purchases too. But hey, there's always the Swap Board if all else fails. :)

I have very fine, thin, and flat hair. I bought one of these and I really love it. It looks awesome. It does not look the same as how it does on the model with the big hair. But it looks really really good. What is cool about this headband is that it is completely malleable. You can bend any portion of it in any direction, so you can make it work for very fine hair. I love how it looks, it is exactly the sunglasses effect. With fine hair, sunglasses push your hair in a certain way, and this headband works the same. It really is awesome. Best headband I've ever had, and one of the only hair "toys" i've purchased. I'm really glad I did. Looks great with a braid and a bun too.

I will see if I can figure out how to take a picture and get it on the site here so you can see.

Anyone with bangs try this? I'm currently in the process of growing out my blunt straight across bangs. I wear them sideswept now and it looks nice, but it gets annoying. I can't pin them back either because they longest is not quite cheekbone length and the short hairs underneath spring up. I've tried headbands but they always cause me to get this "crown" along the back of the band of hair that spring up. A headband that didn't have this effect would be extremely, extremely nice!

Do you find these hurt behind the ears? I love headbands, but they always hurt after an hour or so...any recommendations are welcome?

I've been using the band for some time now and here are some remarks.
- It is very malleable and it took me a bit of experimenting to find the best shape for me.
- It is relatively heavy and doesn't have the little teeth at the bottom that will grip into the hair and so I find that it has a bit of a tendency to slide and need some re-adjustment (kind of like "real" sunglasses will do :))
- I do find that it sometimes starts hurting by the end of a day but that happens much later than with almost all other bands. I do wear it all day.
- I don't like it in combination with glasses. They don't get along behind my ears.

Bottomline, I think this is a great band (the first I ever got compliments for :D) but it needs some patience and playing around to "personalize" it to somebodies particular shape.
