Okay let me tell you what my hair is like. Dry. It's gotten better in the last few weeks that I have been pampering it (no heat, stopped dying, oiling regularly). I decided to start trying coconut oil on my hair. And it is just divine. I love the slip of it and it makes my hair so shiny I've only been using it for a couple days but I'm in love. I wash my hair every other day when it gets REALLY greasy (scalp is greasy, ends are dry). I oil the ends of my hair with coconut oil the night before wash day and I put castor oil on my scalp. Am I oiling too much? Are there any negative side effects of oiling too much? I feel silly asking this questions but newbie here :o TIA!

No, feed your hair as much oil as it wants. :) Castor oil on the scalp overnight ended up being a bit too much for my skin, but if it suits your scalp then I don't see any problem.

I'd imagine that too much oil would weigh down the strands and make them lank. Also, every time you add oil, you run the risk of buildup, not to mention attracting those tiny particles floating about.
I'd also be careful about upsetting the natural acid balance of your scalp with too much oil.

Be careful, you might get buildup from all the oilings. Other than that I don't foresee anything bad coming of it. I say if it makes you happy then go for it!!!

I clarify my hair with baking soda about once a month, more if my hair really needs it. I don't like clarifying because it dries my hair out but if I use a deep conditioner after, it seems to be fine.

It would be too much for me.
I only coconut oil the bottom half of my length the day before I plan to wash it (or maybe an hour before). Otherwise it attracts too much lint and makes my hair tangly.
I never oil my scalp. It does a good job of self-oiling.

hi there,
welcome newbie....
ive been oiling my hair since i was a toddler... ofcourse mom took care of it... even as a toddler i had pretty long hair... during my teens i carried on this tradition and now i just see how people can leave their hair without oiling it...
trust me when i say there is nothing bad coming out of coconut oiling my scalp and hair lenght... so go on dont worry... keep oiling ur tresses...
castor oil is best for thick hair growth... and its best for the scalp as it promotes new hair growth... be careful not to use castor oil on length of ur hair... or it might lead to buildup.

If you oil the scalp, then wash the hair, how do you know that you washed enough oil out?
I can't know it until it get dryed, and sometimes too oily.

I got fed up with having this problem, too. Now I measure out my oil when I apply (2 teaspoons) and it always CO's out completely.

The last time I use the CO only, and it was much better than shampoo :)
