View Full Version : Hair stick/fork buns for thick hair?

Once again I have something of a noob question. I've been trying to figure out more updos for my hair sticks/fork and have been having a really hard time of it. I've got about a 50% success rate going with the lazy wrap, and can manage Spidermom's bun occasionally (I swear my hands aren't big enough for it...) but it seems like everything else ends in an exploded mess or at least a bulbous, protruding mess, and I feel like I don't have enough length, but I'm about 1.5 inches from waist length! :brickwall My hair's just so bloody thick.

Any suggestions? I have some of those "magic pins" and hair screws for added support, I've yet to have them successfully compensate for the overall fail of my buns...:(

I was just able to do the Pencil Bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34) when my hair was around your length, so maybe you can give that one a go if you haven't already. There's also the Chinese Bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUT3KJgASac) which is quick and easy, although I needed to use lots of extra pins to hold the very ends of my hair plus my old layers. Braided buns consisting of two or three braids also held like a rock although they were a bit more time consuming. My go-to style was the Lazy Wrap Bun, which I could only do by wrapping around one or two fingers and then making it very tight.

That's about it for hairstick-friendly styles. I am yet to get any nice hairsticks or forks, but I hope you find the links helpful. We seem to have similar hair types so feel free to browse my hairstyles album because I have lots of pictures of styles that I wore before I got rid of my layers. :flower:

Try the pencil bun, using just a couple of fingers if you need to. FrannyG has an article (Articles section) showing how to make a wrapped hairstick bun, and that should work for you, too. Since your hair is longer, you may need to give your ponytail a few turns (like you would for making a cinnabun) before you start twisting with the stick. This makes a very elegant looking bun with a little practice.

ETA: I thought FrannyG's article was on LHC, but I couldn't find it. Here's a link to her blog and the instructions: http://frannyslonghair.blogspot.com/search/label/videos

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll have to try them all once my hair dries a bit...also known as some time tomorrow :)

I'd give Torrin's version of the nautilus bun (www.youtube.com/watch?v=b86ZH0J7xtE) a shot. It was the first bun I could do; it worked for me at BSL if I skipped the wrapping-round-the-base step. I let the ends loop inwards to the bun too. :)
