There was an older thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=71136&highlight=dreadsock)on this in a different forum and it did not receive but a couple responses. I just came across this same product in my neverending search for the perfect sleepwear.

Here is the Dreadsock (http://dreadsockonline.com/dreadsock.aspx).

Here is a tight fitting sleep cap (http://www.headcovers.com/12139/silky-lace-sleep-cap/).

I really would like to hear from someone who has tried a dreadsock.

But I am thinking I could wrap my hair around my head and use a snug fitting cap instead of a "bag". This would eliminate having to remove my hair out from under myself or my husband at night.

I currently use silk pillow cases but my hair in no way stays on the pillows so I also use a sleep cap I made that is TBL (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/<a href="http://s393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/?action=view&amp;current=DSC00131_640x480.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC00131_640x480.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>) and tapered down but it is UGLY and, quite frankly, frightens my family. LOL. Plus it is not really silk and I am not sure how good it is for my hair. Also, my hair is sticking out the ends.

I am currently attempting to make a new sleep stocking from satin but so far it is not working out. I cannot get it to taper around my head without a head model and even then (poor DH) I still cannot get it esthetically pleasing. The new one promises to be Classic + but I have yet to figure out how to sew it properly.

Classic sleep bonnets (http://www.amazon.com/Stay-Satin-Nites-Bonnet-Sleep/dp/B003I5SC72)make my hair a tangled nest by morning not to mention ALSO frighten my family. LOL. Feedback?

Sorry I can't help you much regarding the dreadsock, but that sleep cap looks like just the ticket to me with my apl+ hair. I wear a mask over my eyes when I sleep (a folded up cotton bandana) and I'm worried about it rubbing my hair in the same spot, but it would slip right off a regular sleep cap.

If I had longer than say, waist length hair though I think I would definitely try the dreadsock. It looks quite nice, you could get it in a pretty color and it seems like the bag isn't too long that it would be prohibitive. Why not try it?

I have one of the dreadsocks on my head right now. I got it from Sally's. I don't sleep in it, but I use it for hot oil treatments. I like it. I think it would work well for sleeping as well.

I have something similar, not the same brand. I put it on around my neck, flip my head, and slither it up over my hair. Since my hair sticks out past the end (as yours obviously will), I grabbed the end of the tube and let my hair fall back down on top my head and tuck the end into the front like a turban.

It worked well for me.

Haven't tried a dreadsock, I suppose mostly because I've never seen one IRL.

I slept with a satin sleep bonnet (http://tenderheaded.com/sislbo.html) for quite a while, but eventually the elastic died. By then, they'd raised the price, and I didn't want to spend that much for something that wouldn't last. (I think at the time I did a lot of overnight oiling and washed the bonnet quite a lot, probably didn't help it's longevity.)

I haven't tried a dreadsock but if your family can get past the scariness of the sleep bonnet (LOL!) I braid my hair before putting it in the bonnet and that cuts down on tangling significantly.

Sorry, I use a standard sleep bonnet and end up with tangle-free waves in the morning. Doesn't end up wrapped around my neck or over my shoulder like the longer options (http://www.amazon.com/Stay-On-Satin-Pocket-Bonnet/dp/B003I5ZMDY/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1318003384&sr=1-1), and neither my husband nor cats are so frightened that they can't handle it.

I use the standard sleep bonnet. It comes off as I sleep most nights. Very tempted to try a dreadsock.

You should.

Then let me know if you like it. LOL

I have a buff, which appears to be similar to the dreadsock thing. It's very nice for doing work (e.g. gardening) where you'd want to cover your hair to prevent it from getting snagged or dirty. It's also good for outdoor situations (hiking, etc.) where you want to minimise fly-aways appearing from being out in the wind. It is also good for use under potentially damaging hats/helmets, e.g bike helmet. In general, I use it over a bun.

I haven't used it for sleeping, mainly because I like to sleep with my hair (within my sleep sock-thing) either loose or in a non-bunned english plait. Both of those would hang out the bottom ... and really, at classic+ I need to protect my length/ends just as much as / more than the fresh new stuff around my scalp.

As for what I actually use for sleep, well, a modified version of your homemade sleep sock thing. Mine is a 1/2 metre of silk satin sewn into a tube using a single french seam, with the selvedges at either end. Because this was not quite big enough, I tapered the end (simply by cutting a right-angled triangle shaped piece out of each side at the bottom) and then took one of the cut-off triangles and inserted it as a gore into the opposite end, making that end wider. (This would not be needed if you bought more than 1/2 metre - i.e. if you weren't as cheap as I was!) I then gathered the wide end onto a wide elasticated headband. I wear it with the satiny side in and flip the headband back over the length, so that it doesn't actually touch my skin/hair but sits on top of the fabric. This prevents the red line across the forehead that could occur from a narrow elastic, plus ensures the hair is only touching satin, not the elasticated stuff.

That works pretty well. If I have any sort of headache I won't wear it. Often, it falls off during the night. Sometimes I turn the tail into a beebut bun to keep it out of the way, mostly not though - I just chuck the tail up over my pillow.

The taper at the end of the sock actually helps - my hair is long enough now that when loose it is beginning to stick out the end. The taper helps catch my hair and prevent it from poking out, even though it can if you straighten everything out.

I don't have any shaping at all in the head region of the sock, minus that triangular gore (maybe 6" long, 4 or 5" base?). However, because of the wide elasticated headband it fits quite smoothly around the front of the head.

I use a stretchy scarf for outdoor work when I need my hair totally covered. Today I am wearing a snow cap (the fitted kind) over my shower cap because I have had SMT on my hair all day. I know it would never stay on all night. I am considering one of those silky cloche-style caps if I could figure out how to get all my hair in it and keep it in there.

Maybe it depends where you live? My parents are near Chicago, so there are lots of stores that cater to black haircare. It was in the "ethnic" section. It's got a pouch at the back and then a band at the front that extends so that you can tie it.

Ah, well, dreads things. Just thought I would get involved. ;p

I've never tried sleeping with any type of thing on my head, I thrash around a whole bunch and gave always thought I would thrash it off. It looks really interesting tho, and I imagine if he can get all that dread into the small one and it still stays on it would have no problem containing brushable hair. I say that only because my hair has started to throw things off of itself because it doesn't like to be bent or anything anymore.

I'm curious how it works too, if you or anyone else tries it! (Esp. to keep lint out of my hair... eugh!)

I really wanted to see pictures of the scary headsock.. but the link is broken. 404 error.

Anyways. I was going to buy on of these but I think they are no longer in business. http://prettywrap.com/index.php So, I was just going to make one. I'm thinking something like this could be made for lots and lots of hair?

kats: I have considered one of those, too, but I cannot have "bulk" in the back of my head and still sleep, thus why my sleep cap is long.

The dreadsock is not scary, at least not to me! Just google "dreadsock" and it should come up, though for some reason I had to put a speace between dread and sock because, together, it came up with ZERO matches, but apart it came up with DREADSOCK. Go fig. Stupid Internet.

The last time I bit the bullet and bought something like this on the Internet I was sorry I did and wasn't worth shipping back for a refund, ya know? That is why I made my own.

Red: I had trouble sleeping with something on my head, too, but it became a necessity.

I have a dreadsock thing. It makes me look hideous and I find the elastic round the hairline uncomfortable.

ETA So I never wear it.

A lady who has recently recovered from hair loss recently gave me her underscarves and such that she no longer uses. Among the items she gave me was a ScubaDoRag. It has a pouch in the back for containing hair (or braided hair) that would otherwise hang free in the back. It is a bit more challenging to tie on than a scarf. It is stretchy and goes across the forehead at the front.

I wasn't sure if someone hasn't already thought of this, but when I saw the words hairsock i was thinking literally a sock. Has anyone tried something like a tube sock? I have some from the men's department that a probably long enough to cover almost all of my hair. Wouldn't the snugness of it keep it all from tangling? You could just attach it with a ponytail holder. If your hair was too long you could just snip off the end and maybe sew another sock on. I think I might try that. I've never used a cap before but brading my hair and throwing it over the pillow doesn't work anymore.

I am resurrecting this thread from last year hoping someone has tried one of these since then and can tell me about them. I have never worked up the certainty to order one.

I haven't used a dreadsock, but I do use silk beanies from Pretty Antoinet's and I highly recommend them. They hold my hair much closer to my head so it doesn't flop around. I've considered a dreadsock, but I don't think it would work because my hair would spill out.

http://prettyanntoinets.com/category_4/Beanies.htm

ETA: i saw where you said you can't sleep with a bump on your head. I twist my hair up into a loose bun, but it's loose enough that it spreads out a bit and really isn't that bunchy. You could play around with how you arrange your hair to make it work. My thing is that I can't stand having my hair flop around inside the cap, so it has to fit closely.

I can't help thinking that it looks like children's boxers shorts. Handily, it might be a cheaper alternative. just sew the legs shut XD

Hmm...actually not a bad idea. LOL. I did find a potential issue with the dreadsock (sight unseen), since they are made for dreads, they are likely made for a certain about of bulk which I don't have. I think it would probably slip off my head. Wow I wish there was a hair store somewhere that sold all this stuff you can only find online so we can see before we buy.

I don't understand how you get all your hair into that. And no, I can't even sleep with it bunched up to my mid back loose. I have a sleep stocking that is TBL. I used an elastic to make it only about APL/midback and there was this lump of hair at the bottom of the "bag". It was horrible.

I must be the only one having trouble with this. The stocking I made worked for so long but I seem to toss and turn too much and have practically strangled myself with it (like I do a braid). Anything else seems too bulky. Besides, my ends are sticking out of the stocking now and I hav tried and failed to make a longer one. A braid gives me a headache every time. Grr!

i tie a silk scarf in a way that captures all my hair in a similar way to the dreadsock but it's nice because I can customize it to how i'm wearing my hair to sleep.

How about an actual stocking (or tights)?! You could even buy silk ones! Hair goes down the leg, stretchy bit at the top goes round your head. Tad bank robberesq but practical!

Lol, I could fit a lot more hair into it, and will if I reach classic! :) I think I misunderstood what you needed since you were talking about the tighter fitting caps. You don't mind having something that fits tight to your head, but then your hair would need to be enclosed down your back and not in any kind of bunch, right? Then I don't think the dreadsock would work, either, because it's not long enough. You're going to have bunched up hair somewhere unless you have something that's as long as your hair, and then you'll have the strangulation issue. There are a lot of different loc covers out there, but I don't think any of them are long enough for you!

OK, I went and watched a short Dreadsock video. I see what you're concerned about--the length is too short, so you're going to have bunched-up hair at the bottom. I think the only solution is something you made or is custom-made for you.

Jeanniet, you seem to understand my dilemma perfectly. LOL. I have tried making my own several times and the one I DO have I made from pajama pants (silky). My hair is longer than a pant leg (after it goes over my head).

I have searched the web to no avail. If I was a sewer, I could have solved this long ago. If i ever succeed, I will sell them on etsy!
