sock bun help

My sock bun curls and waves never come out right. It's always way too pouffy and half, especially the bottom half doesn't curl. My bun is made of two socks. Could this contribute to why it's not curling properly, that its too big?

Maybe use smaller socks? I have fine hair so a normal adult sized sock doesn't work for me at all. I found toddler socks on the clearance rack at my local craft store and tried them and they work much better for me.

I think I should try that, I've done it multiple times but it never works out.
