i keep finding this style in tumblr. i can see that it's just a french braid but by grabbing a strand. but once i get past my head, i dunno how to grab the a piece of hair... should i just grab it from underneath one of the strands? anyway, if you decide to try this hairstyle, feel free to post pictures of your braid!

It's a cage braid, with the bottom 3 inches left loose.

oh good! there's a name, i can hopefully google a how-to video. and it's not the bottom 3 inches that i was wondering about, just the part after my head coz i couldn't do it... it looked funky. lol.

edit: found a video in case anyone wanted it http://youtu.be/nGL54QjAMzM :)

Try to find another LHCer in your area or a long haired friend. If nothing else, there's always wigs and mannequins. There's been quite a few times that I've thought about both but right now I don't need either one. My DBF has 37" long hair too. I'll just practice on him if I have to.

ETA: when doing a cage braid, you just want to add hair from the hair line. You want to leave some hair hanging loose between the hair line and the braid itself. That way it looks like some of your hair is "caged" between the hair line and the braid itself. Hints the name of the braid.

If you can, buy a wig. I work in a costume and wig shop and I can practice on the wigs. I've learned how to french braid using a wig meant for Sleeping Beauty. :)

i did do that. it just looks like it doesn't from my pics because it's dark. :)

Ok, if it helps, this is a basic cage braid I just did on my man's hair.

This is a pic from the back. It's nothing fancy. It's basic.

I brought more hair in every other set of cross overs so it's easier to see.

Here's a couple of pics of the side view with me holding the braid out away from his head a little bit.

I hope these pics help a little bit. Like I said, it's very basic. It's a good way to learn this particular style. Just like every braid, its got all kinds of variations.

Thanks! I think I like the one where the "cages" are closer together. It's the reaching the bottom of my hair that's the problem. I would love to be able to do the one in the youube video I posted!

I think you're doing the right thing here. You just need to grab smaller sections.

If you have access, you can try this thread for finding someone to practice with: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=78270

Somewhat off topic: Shelly you've added an avatar! Your hair looks gorgeous! So does your man's hair. I can see how living with hair like his every day could make you less objective about your own hehe but there's no doubt yours is beautiful too.

Thank you Airmide. That is the best pic ever taken of my hair. It was taken back in 2004. I don't know how I got it to look so good that day but I haven't been able to do it again since. I've tried several times.

As far as his hair, he was having a very bad hair day. It needed washed. It had been a few days since he washed it. I'll have to get a pic of it freshly washed and brushed out.
