View Full Version : What does your hair look like when short?

I recently had to cut my hair into a pixie due to losing it to health issues; and it still looks wavyish, it doesn't make complete curls like it does when longer though. Oh, and about how long do you think it would take to grow a pixie to chin length, using the average growing rate of hair.?

When my hair was short like bsl it was curlyish and now it barely has a wave(my hair is classicish now)

I'm guessing it would take about 10 months to go from pixie to chin length if your hair has about 4 or 5 inches to get there and your average growth rate is 1/2 inch per month. I've never had my hair in a pixie cut. The shortest I've had it is chin length and I think it looked terrible on me.

My hair looks like this when its short. ;)

I chopped off most of my damage all at once, and then slowly removed the last of it with tiny trims (about 6 1/4 trims) and my hair is nearly shoulder length (original cut was about 1"-3" long) and I cut it november 26th last year. Hope that helps. ;)

I just made a thread here about my 6-months growth after a big chop :) Wait if I can find the picture...

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e375/moresque/toenennu.jpg

Some people say my hair grows really slow, but I think it doesn't. People here have said that my hair grows really fast.. but I think my hair grows well.. at a normal rate :) (I also had 2 trims after the big chop and kept the mullet short!

What I have learned though (I have had MANY pixies in the past, for like 4 years! You can see more of them in my album) is that every pixie is different. Mine wasn't that hard to grow out since it was longer on top, but at the sides it was really, really short and cut off right above the ear. So it will take forever to reach chin length. I once had a pixie that was cut differently and that grew out much faster! My pixie also had a lot of short layers so now the ends are still a bit thin, because that simply is just one layer, if you know what I mean. It will probably take ages before it is all one length :P But it is getting there :D

Also, if you're not already in (at? on? to? reading? uh?) that thread, I welcome you to the Super-Shorties thread :D I've found it very supporting, since not everybody here understands how it is to grow out a pixie (a pain in the bottom ;))

Oh and I normally have wavy here (on that picture it was straight so that's why I took that picture, finally a good picture to see how it has grown! My hair always waves 'out' at the sides :P) and I can say you that waves do eat up the length! >:[

My hair is bad short. I have cowlics all over. And my hair is super straight. It sticks out at all sorts of odd angles and is poofy too. I look like a mushroom head with short hair. Very few look as bad as I do with hair shorter than 3 inches long. And I don't have the face for super short hair. I bet your little curls look a lot cuter in comparison to how mine looks short. Once mine gets past the ears I start looking like a girl again though. I don't think it should take too long for you to get to chin length. But since you are a curly girl it may take a little longer than average. Curls can eat up length. I would say 8 to 15 months depending on hair type and growth rate. Make sure to eat healthy foods that have enough iron and protien. This will give you your fastest growth. Enough iron keeps the blood flow. Good blood flow grows faster hair than poor blood flow. Also, hair is made of protiens. So getting enough complete protiens will help you have the best hair you can. Keep in mind that if you do not eat meat, you can combine pland based foods to get a complete protien. Exercize has been known to help hair grow faster. Better body health is reflected in your hair.

My hair is pretty well dead straight, so it's predictable for a short cut. I had a pixie in Feb of 2010:

Which I grew and trimmed into a (godawful) bob in September 2010:

Which grew into a chin length bob by February this year:

And just for an indicator of growth, I haven't cut my fringe since February this year and this is how much it's grown:

(Yes, I am a complete dork, and my hair is wavy after an attempt at bandana waves - they didn't stay in too long)

Off topic: ^^ Your hair grows FAST! :surprise:

How my hair looks short depends alot on the cut. I don't have any terrible aggressive cow licks, so my hair does fine. Last time I wore it short it was also severely bleached, so I don't know how it would behave if I would cut it now. I had short hair all through my teens, but I think my hair has changed some since then.

I had my hair cut similar to Oktobergoud in 1998. I cannot "do" short hair. I have cowlicks in the back of my head I never knew I had until that cut. I do remember thinking it grew back quickly but I didn't try to grow it, I am sure I had in between stages but I don't remember any of them! I had just had my 3rd child (she is 13 now) so I think I was too busy to notice. I know I have pictures of me just over a year later and my hair is past chin length slightly. Another year and I was shoulder length+ and I had to have had trims to make it all one length. Of course I was younger then.

I had my hair cut sometimes in the early 2000's (I am thinking, 2003) from about BSL to just above shoulders and remembered hating it then. My cowlicks seem to get worse as I get older. Funny, now my hair is almost Classic and the cowlicks I hated when my hair was short now produce curly hair (nape area) half way up my head despite all the weight of my hair pulling on it. I will NEVER have my hair cut shorter than BSL again for this reason. If it was ALL curly, that would be one thing, but my hair is stick straight everywhere else.

I just remember spending oodles of time trying to get my hair to lay right when it was short and never succeeding.

Your bob was well done; it is just that you probably saw that you prefer sideswept bangs.

Mine stays mostly straight with a touch of wurly when it's short (2-3"). It's when it gets longer (4-5"+) that I start getting properly curly bits mixed in. Coincidentally, that's usually when it started looking like Neil Gaiman's if I didn't slick it back to dry, something that still delights me in a weird way.

Very short, it's pretty cute.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c79/spidermom/SHORT.jpg
But as it grows out, it gets wider before it gets longer and looks hideous. This is natural, air-dried hair:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c79/spidermom/BOONEW.jpg
As you can imagine, I didn't let that happen very often. I considered the blow-dryer and the wide-barrel curling iron my friends back in those days.

The shortest mine has ever been is chin length, and the effect is quite similar to Spidermom's second picture. : ) I need weight in my hair to get proper wurls. One of these days, I'll find some pictures.

I don't have a picture, but my bob never laid right, even with heat styling. It was too "fluffy" and wavy. It didn't look good. Now that it's longer, even at APL, it's laying so much better - and without using any heat. Never going back to a shorter cut because my hair drove me nuts.

At 1/2 inch per month, a person is expected to grow about 6 inches of hair a year. Pixie hair is about 3 inches in length and on me, chin length is at 10 inches. So it is about 7 inches of growth. I would say about 12-14 months.

My hair looks basically straight in a pixie, even though it's quite wavy when it gets longer. For me, even though my hair grows fast, it takes well over a year to grow out a pixie; I have to get it trimmed into shape every 6-8 weeks in the growing-out process to keep the waves from making my hair look ridiculous. Once it gets past chin I can start drying it into curls with the diffuser and lots of gel, which helps.

Horrible.... My hair looks horrible... straight, cowlicky, some parts stick straight up, other parts lay stuck to my head... Not good.
Actually, it looked just like my youngster's at the moment. Only more uneven. It definitely looks better on him. (and he needs a trim). Poor kid got my cowlicks!

My hair is wavier and sort of puffy (volume on top) when it's short. It's cute in its own way. Now that it's waist length, though, it's weighed down enough that it looks dead straight for the most part and tends to be pretty flat on top.

I dislike having short hair very much! A year ago my hair was cut to just above shoulder length, thanks to a hairstylist cutting too much. I also have layers, so it made it worse. My hair was straight, and random parts in the back just curl up at the ends, and my bangs curl out in an annoying way. The layers always curl out and cause problems.

I've been growing it a little over a year now, so it doesn't bother me too much now. Plus I have a little wave to my hair now :)

The shortest my hair has ever been is in between chin length and shoulder length.

It was a thick, over-volumized, bush. I look horrible with short hair, and short haircuts make my hair look horrible too- my hair's already too thick when long, so you can guess how it would be when short.

If my hair is shorter than 5 inches then it's very curly with lots of volume, the longer it get the straighter it get's, except for the hair by my neck it stay's curly.

When my hair was pixie length, it was very soft and poofy but was still too short for most of my hair's natural slight body waves to appear. Even though it was poofy and fluffy, it still looked very smooth unless manipulated with products so it resembled a mushroom. I don't have any pictures and am glad I don't because the thought of having my hair that short makes me cringe.

Well, this is me, growing out a pixie in June 2004
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6233&pictureid=104718
And in October-November same year I had enough hair to cut into a chinlenght bob, which I don't have pics of. I got my pixie in january/february so let's say it took me 10 months to grow it to chin lenght. I like the little waves I got from the pixie, but my cowlick didn't like the pixie at all :p

When I had it, I absolutely adored my hair when it was a little below chin length. The curls looked pretty and it was the most low maintenance hair ever. Get it wet, scrunch the curls and have air-dried pretty hair 15 minutes later.

Anything above chin length and my curls turn into really tight ringlets and look a little odd. Thankfully, it doesn't take too long for it to grow out enough to look good and the low maintenance of it is nice.

As a very nice bonus, hair bling for short hair is inexpensive. You can buy a ton of pretty blingy things to clip hair away from your face. And short hair is ridiculously comfortable in summer.

The shortest my hair has ever been is shaved. And I got mistaken for being a boy, twice, when I was 13. Quite a blow to my young teenage self-esteem lol.
Currently my hair is at collarbone, if I leave it curly I look girly, if I brush it I look like a bushy haired guy :P

My hair when short was super flippy. I didn't know the curly girl method yet, so I didn't even have waves, just flips. I straightened it every day to make it behave. I think I look okay with short hair, but it's just too much of a pain to deal with, I'm quite looking forward to long hair. :)
These pictures are the shortest my hair has every been, and I think I was about 15 in these? The first two pictures are more natural and the other three are straightened.

Kira you can totally rock the short hair. I'm super jealous...

My hair is short now and it looks awful. It's thick, poofy and waves strangely IMHO. I keep my hair in a bun or at least a pony tail because I feel like short hair doesn't frame my face well and it makes my nose look really big. I hate it.

But I cut it to grow it out long, strong and layer free...I literally have to say that to myself every day to cope with my short hair.

My avatar and this picture were taken on the same day...avatar picture (hair up) is ehh and this (hair down) is EWW IMHO but I still love it because of my little princess .

I used to keep it at pixie and it was straight, but the ends would flip [one side out, one side in] at lengths all the way to shoulder.. and I looked like a boy. But now, I haven't had it that short again since growing it to hip, so IDK what it'd look like now.. a lot healthier, I'm sure. But not sure about texture/wave.

Mostly in my childhood and early teens my hair's been anywhere from shaved through multiple pixies, bobs etc. to where it is now.
When short it is much much wavier and never behaves - it would either stick to my head at the roots and be voluminous at the ends or it will be a total and devastating mess.
It's more tame when longer :)

I can't find a picture, but I've had short hair from about the age of 12/13 up to 15. I've had chinlenght hair, a pixie,...
At the age of 13 I had layers cut in for the very first time and BOOM, curls! Probably 3a. Now, at waist, the curls are really stretched out -more like waves.

My hair hasn't been short since I was 12-13. It was boy cut short/buzz cut short.

I've never had it short since, except if you count shoulder length as short, which I do... In a way. I had shoulder length hair 4 years ago after I did a massive chop. I'll never go back to that short either. It was just way too short for my face.

I have an oval face, and people say all they see is hair when they see me sometimes, and that it drags my face down, but you know what? I like it like that.

I've only cut my hair above shoulder length once back in 2005- to cut out old bleach damaged I'd grown out. It is very heavily layered starting at just below my eyes down to between chin and shoulder length. I hated it then because I didn't know anything about styling hair- but looking back I actually think it was quite cute and if I ever want to grow out my henna I will be getting this hair cut again.

ssjhotau2, your hair looks great in all three pictures you've shown. Love your color and look in the third one, especially.

Here are some pics of my hair short. For the first three, I used a blow dryer and round brush. For the next two, same, but scrunching the bottom curls. The last one is right from the salon chop, dried with a diffuser and scrunching.

I will call short hair on me just above the ears and trimmed short all the way around both bangs and the back. My hair loses all of its wave. It will go from my 2a to probably 1b. If cut too short on top it will cowlick and poke straight up. Letting the top hair grow is only way it will lay back down again.

My Mother talked me into a pixie when I was young by saying I would be so "in style" and think of how easy it would be! Yeah, right. By the time I quit correcting everyone who said I was a "very nice looking young man or boy" by saying I was a girl and just went with being called a boy, I was ready to kill. Needless to say, I don't remember how long it took to grow back out. I did have cowlicks everywhere that did there own thing no matter how much I tried to work with them and when I got a bit of length, I curled every crazy direction - mostly straight out. Mom never talked me into anything again and had a heck of a time even getting me to trim. :D

My hair looks great short. In fact, a friend keeps urging me to cut back to pixie. :) But I think I look best with around shoulder or APL or BSL... but I want longer! Hehe. Mine looks good short partially because my head is covered in cowlicks... that sucks when my hair gets longer, but when it's a pixie, it looks like I've styled my hair that way. :) It looks stylishly flippy, but when it gets around shoulder, it just looks like I slept funny! :p

In April of 2002 I had my DH cut my hair a bit more than chin length and it got really thick and poofed sideways.

In March of 2009, I got cranky and pulled my BLS hair to a pony tail right in front of my nose and chopped it off right there, and I got--- CURLS? I was so surprised.

My hair itself looked good very short, a little longer on top. My natural volume worked well. However, it didn't look that great with my face and my "personal style" (i.e., not enough Tertiary Sexual Characteristics (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TertiarySexualCharacteristics)). I got sick of being called "sir". I want to not care if I look androgynous, but it's too much mental effort on a daily basis.

At longer short lengths, like chin length, the waves make it fluff out sort of weird. I think it would look nice if cut well and heat-styled, but I can't be bothered to learn how to do that.
