Hello all,
Relative newbie here, I've been growing out a short cut for a while but decided in August to consciously grow out my hair and to treat it right, so I have stopped heat-styling and chemical dyes, and am babying it a lot.
I've going to a wedding in a month or so, and since I wear my hair either down or in a ponytail I'd try to do something else cool with it. Right now it's just below shoulder length but has some layers in it (shortest is chin length). It's too layers and/or short for most buns I know of, and I don't particularly want to heat style it in any way.
I'm a complete newbie so there's probably loads of styles I don't know, and I'd like to get practicing now and buy any accessories I'd need. Any ideas on what I could do?

I think a sock bun decorated with some pretty pins and maybe some face framing looks very nice and it's easy to do.

MinderMutsig, I thought about a sock bun, but I don't think my hair is long enough to do one yet - the layers are too awkward and won't sit in nicely. Wish I'd never got the blasted things now!

If you can do a pony tail, you probably have the length to do a sock bun. It is one of the first ones many people manage with hair growing out from really short cuts. There are good videos out there to show you how.
A french twist doesn't take a lot of length and you just need good hair pins. The version called a peacock twist is fun if you don't need all your hair contained.
I think the gibson tuck looks pretty, and to me it works better at shorter lengths.

I can't really do a ponytail though, not a proper one without a bajillion pins as most of the layers are too short. So a sock bun doesn't look good or sit right.
I'll google those other ones you mentioned as I've never heard of a gibson tuck or peacock twist so they might do the trick

When I was around that length, one cool updo I did was by taking small sections of hair and twist them into mini beebutt/cinnabuns in the back of my head. Fasten with dressy mini clawclips or pins and use whatever fancy accessories to make it more formal.

I did something like this but made just one bun with the mini claws, i always got lots of compliments on it. I think there is still a picture in my album.

thanks for the ideas guys. I'm going to start practicing now, as I'm useless with my hair lol. Haven't had it this long in years and have forgotten how to 'do' it.
But some good things to try out here and see what works.

Twin Dutch going into a braided bun or something like that works really well with my layers. If you work your way down the sides, not far above your ears, the top/middle can go straight down, so you don't have the center part, which I hate.

Here is the lower kind, closer to the ears. Sorry, it's fuzzy and I slept in it, so all the little bits are popping out. Ordinarily, they are all tucked in, often using a latch hook, which works WONDERFULLY, especially on the crown braids.
These pictures also show how it looks without the center part down the back, and my bangs also have a side part.

Oh! And here is a much nicer one. A shorter tail can be tucked in, too.

Maybe someday I will get around to replacing my missing memory stick so I can use the regular camera again (like for the last one)! Look at what a difference there is in the color!
