View Full Version : Question for those who have grown out hair, cut it and regrown it

I had grown my hair to BSL, cut it back to shoulder length and am now regrowing it. The other day, I was thinking to myself "I can't wait until my hair gets to the length when I can do "that style" (you can insert whatever bun, braid, etc you want in here but I was specifically thinking of a bun at the time) again. However, I realized my hair is now longer than it has ever been.

Has anyone else noticed a difference in your hair in subsequent growing out periods? I don't know if my hair has gotten thicker or perhaps my layers fall slightly differently but there is definitely a difference in when i have been able to do certain styles. Just curious if anyone has had this happen.

I had 47 inch hair that was cut to shoulder, then grown out to its present length.

Didn't notice any different in texture although it was thinner on the right hand side (due to medical issues/anemia).

I had waist+ length hair in 2007, then I had it cut to shoulder length in 2008. I had lots of damage from bleaching my whole head of hair several times, and from dying it various colors. During the process of growing it back out I've had to trim and trim lots of inches. Now my hair is past waist length again, and has a nice full hemline and not too much damage. I have noticed a difference in it from when it waist length a few years ago, but that's probably because I don't bleach it, flat iron it, dye it, etc. My hair feels thick and healthy.

Yes...the last time I had my hair at BSL, it was a 1C maybe a 2A. Then in 2008 I cut my hair to pixie and kept it that way for a year. Now my hair is APL+ and is a 2C maybe a 3A. The thickness and texture is the same but boy is it much wavier/curly.

I had tailbone length in my 20's,early 30's then cut it off.Now am regrowing and am at waist, not sure if it will grow longer, will have to wait and see.Now that I'm post menopausal,it is thinner, finer and has some gray but the curl is the same.

Were you a member of this forum the first time you grew it out? I wasn't, and it's like a different head of hair this time....thicker, wavier, more volume, shinier. I stopped dying after cutting it from BSL to chin in January and it's so much more well behaved now.

Actually, I was a member here the first time I grew my hair out which is why I am quite surprised that there is such a difference... i am guessing I have more layers now which is making it harder to do some up-dos. Hopefully as I grow them out, i will have less trouble.

I have cut virgin hair well above shoulder and grown it back to waist a few times and never noticed a difference from one long hair episode to the next. I did however notice a difference in "finishing" buns after I trimmed 2-3 inches off the ends to get rid of 3 years worth of neglected splits. Tapered ends are much easier to wind into a bun and make disappear than a thicker hemline!

I would hypothesize that different layers, the result of the original short hair cut as it grows out, could make some styles easier or harder to do at different lengths the same way that over all thinner hair can be put in some updos at shorter lengths than thick hair. This could also have an affect on the appearance of natural waves/curls.

I've noticed a difference in how I remember my hair being long - but whether there is or not I think will remain to be seen.

I had long (could sit on it) hair until I was 21/22 the cut it into a pixie. I've since grown it to shoulder and cut a few times.
Until I was 18/19 I didn't dye my hair and only blowdried it rarely. I remember it being really straight and needing washed every day.

Since then I've dyed, bleached, straightened, blowdried, you name it on my hair. It's just below shoulder legnth now and I can wash it every other day. It's mostly straight but with a slight wave. However, it could straighten more as it lengthens so who knows.

I grew my hair to long-waist-length, and cut it to a layered look with longest at BSL. I've now grown to TB+. I wasn't a member the first time I grew my hair out, and I think for that reason I've noticed a distinct difference to growing out my hair this time. It's thicker and healthier than it was before.

My hair was around hip/tailbone length and I cut it to my chin. I maintained it around shoulder/APL for a while and now I'm growing it back. It's just skimming my waist now. The first time I grew it out, I heat styled it almost every time I washed it. Needless to say, it was in pretty bad shape. I gave up heat styling (although I do it maybe three times per year) and my hair is growing back much healthier - the curl pattern is more defined (well, kind of a wave pattern but defined) and it's much less frizzy. In fact, now I can let it air dry and it looks fine. Before, it was so damaged I had to heat style it just to smooth it back down.
