I already searched the forums but didn't find a poll like that.
So, to all of you who like to braid, do you prefer French or Dutch Braids? And why?

I French most of the time because it keeps my layers in better.

I like French braids for sleeping or actually keeping my hair braided, but also Dutch because they look nicer (to me). :p I'll go with French.

I love the look of a dutch braid, reminds me of...i dont know, but i it looks cool! And the pattern on the rest of the braid i think is more eyecatching than say a regular french braid tail. French braids always made me uncomfortable and they reminded me of armidillos or roaches..O.O you know, their backs.
Just my own opinion.

I like both, but French braid is my favorite...I think it looks so pretty!

I can French braid faster, so I do that more often. But if I have time, I like to do two Dutch braids that combine into a French.

September 23rd, 2011, 06:24 PM
I like both, but I wear French braids more often, because I like to wear them folded, and they fit under my bike helmet better.

September 23rd, 2011, 06:24 PM
I like french braids if I'm doing all my hair, and dutch braids if I'm doing just the front of my hair like a head band.

I didn't quite get your question because it wasn't specific enough - did you mean to ask if we prefer the look of certain braids or if we prefer doing certain braids??

I prefer the look of French braid but somehow my fingers automatically do the Dutch braid and I'm better at Dutch braiding. I voted for Dutch braid

Juicematic
September 23rd, 2011, 06:36 PM
I voted Dutch. I think they look cooler and less 90's than regular French braids

Airmide
September 23rd, 2011, 06:50 PM
I prefer french braids mostly because I'm most used to them so they're easiest for me to do. Also since I'm so used to french, dutch always looks a little backwards to me. Dutch are better for certain styles though, like crown braids.

sarahramen
September 24th, 2011, 04:28 PM
i voted for dutch because i think they make my hair look longer. I think french are prettier but mine are always bulging at the bottom and they fall out quicker than dutch.

ingvild
September 25th, 2011, 05:27 AM
I just couldn't choose, so I picked both. Right now, though, Dutch braids look better in my hair because they show better how thick my hair is. I also think Dutch braids look more striking, and French braids softer and prettier.

Shesta
September 25th, 2011, 06:30 AM
I prefer dutch braids for both their looks and simplicity :D Yes, my fingers find it more convinient to braid under. One more thing I like is that dutch braids accentuate the thickness of the hair.

Lostsoule77
September 25th, 2011, 08:25 AM
I like both. French is easier for me to do because I learned it years before learning dutch. I like how dutch looks over french more often. It depends on the style of course, but IRL dutch is not as common and I never like being like everyone else.

Coan-Teen
September 25th, 2011, 08:28 AM
I picked French because although I like the look of Dutch braids my fingers always want to do a French braid, so that is always what I end up doing.

I love Dutch braids!! Admittedly, French braids are better for sleeping, but I love the look of a Dutch braid so much better. :p

I voted for dutch braids...they look much better than french braid on my hair. Besides, I see a lot of people with french braid, but dutch braid is not a very common style so I get noticed when i make it ;)

Lippytoes
September 26th, 2011, 02:49 AM
I find Dutch braids so much easier to do! And they hold better in my hair, and look nice and 3D. I very rarely do French braids, although I quite like them too. Just, not as much as Dutch. :)

I prefer Dutch, when I do either, but usually these days I do two English braids, which is faster.

September 26th, 2011, 04:15 AM
I prefer Dutch braiding. It took me a while to learn it. And I now find it even more easy and beautiful at once, so that's the kind of braid I do more often.

vixenmoon
September 26th, 2011, 10:03 AM
I prefer Dutch. I find that it looks bettter, and it's a more intuitive braid for me. The first time that I tried French braiding my own hair (oh so many years ago), I accidentally did a Dutch braid.

WaitingSoLong
September 26th, 2011, 11:38 AM
I chose French. I prefer the look. It is easier for me to do. And when my shorter strands start to fall out (halo), it looks better on me to have this on a french braid rather than a dutch braid.

I do mostly double french braids and dislike the appearance of double dutch braids. I think french braids are an "older" look and dutch a "younger" look. JMO!

I like both equally ^^ they both are gorgeous!

September 26th, 2011, 02:12 PM
I like the look of both, but the french braid has always seemed... 'softer', somehow, at least to my eyes. Also, I find it hard to do good dutch braids since I feel it's always really noticeable if I happen to fail in getting it perfectly straight down the back of my head. :p

I voted for Dutch braids... But I actually like both of them. Dutch just seem easier for me to do at the moment.

I prefer dutch braids. In my mind, it makes the braid look longer.

Audrey Horne

Dutch. Because it keeps my slippery hair better for longer time. I make French when I'm bored with Dutch. Of course, it's time to learn something new :)

September 26th, 2011, 06:08 PM
I vastly prefer the look of French braids on myself -- for some reason I don't think that Dutch ones look as pretty. I think French braids look softer, while Dutch look somehow aggressive to me.

I do, however, really like the way twin Dutch braids look on me, and I especially like the braidwaves they give my hair. :)

Anje
September 26th, 2011, 06:36 PM
Depends on what I'm doing. Dutch was what I learned first, but I think I prefer the look of a French braid on my own hair. Dutch braids emphasize that my hair's a bit thin more than French braids do.

LoriHaigh

I prefer Dutch when I braid other's hair, because it's easier to pin up the rest of the braid into a bun or alongside the raised rows.

I love French braids, I think their my favorite go to style. Specifically, two french braids with a straight part in the middle. An older gentleman told me that I remind him of his mother when I where them and they also remind me of my Grandmother. That makes them a very special style to me!

October 16th, 2011, 09:00 PM
I prefer Dutch both for making and for wearing. I also get a lot more compliments with Dutch than with French. Maybe part of it is the whole being a teenager in the 80's, when everyone did French braids, so I sort of tripped into doing Dutch ones instead (although I didn't even know they had a name until about 15 years ago).

Zesty
October 17th, 2011, 11:06 AM
I prefer Dutch braids. They stay way better than French braids for me, probably because the added sections are pinned under the braid and are therefore less likely to get loose. I also think they look a little more unique than French braids -- but mostly when I'm doing braids I'm looking for utility and not looks.

October 17th, 2011, 11:22 AM
For forever I thought that I was French braiding- my fingers, on the other hand, were doing a Dutch braid. So I had to say Dutch (though I have since taught my fingers to listen to what the brain is telling you!! :p).

MissManda
October 17th, 2011, 04:45 PM
I have no preference when it comes to the appearance of the braid, but Dutch braids tended to hold my hair much more effectively when I had layers. French braids tend to get much messier with my hair, but I don't prefer one over the other.

I clicked I like both, but for different reasons. I like the dutch braid because it keeps my hair very secure for a long time, but I like the french braid because I think it looks a lot nicer and more feminine.

I like them both, and will use whichever better suits what I'm trying to do. I like dutch braids for any kind of fancier hair updo, and french braids as a base for things like the Masara or folded braids. I'll use either of them, depending on my mood, for twin braids.

I find Dutch braiding much easier than French, so that's what I default to. I'd probably prefer French braids if I could do them with any degree of reliability, but that's not the case. I'll keep on practicing for now.

I like three-strand french braids and five-strand dutch braids. I think they show the best of the beauty aspects of each. The four-round is also so awesome but only shows best as a dutch.

I put that I like both but it's not that simple. I like french braids because that's what I learned first. I can do a neat french braid fast on my hair without needing a mirror to check it and it will look nice. While I'm much slower with a dutch braid, I prefer how it looks compared to a french braid.

I almost always do dutch. I like the look better and get far more compliments with dutch than french. My new favorite though is the 4 strand round/box braid. Just as easy to do and I absolutely love the way it looks. Huge fan of the rope braid too - nothing easier to do than a rope!

Mopolop
November 30th, 2011, 01:09 AM
I like french better - dutch holds the hair too tight against my head which makes it look really small to me. Plus I prefer the braid waves from a french braid - makes my hair really big and wavy. :)

I'm still new to this issue, so my braids are often messy. But I found that Dutch braiding is much easier to do, although in the process it seems to me that everything is going wrong. Besides Dutch braid is not so much pulls my hair, than the French braid. But I think that both variants looks cute.

To anyone who likes dutch braids, but can't do them... all I can say is practice! I mean, every day.. try it at least once a day. You WILL get it. I'm living proof. It took about a week or two to master it.

I like the dutch braid better. It's a bit more unusual where I live (at least that's the feeling I've got) and I like them because they have the 3D-feeling to them, whilst I feel the french braid hides my hair.

If it's a single braid, it has to be french. If it's two braids, I still generally prefer french, but sometimes dutch is a nice change.

For some types of more unusual styles of braids It just depends.

I do mostly double french braids and dislike the appearance of double dutch braids. I think french braids are an "older" look and dutch a "younger" look. JMO!
That's funny, because I often think the opposite. To me, Dutch braids look sophisticated and grown up, while French braids look softer and more child-like.

Dutch braids!
They stay longer neat and don't sag down as fast as French braids do.[/teflon hair whine end]
I also prefer their pattern, makes the braid look longer and more substantial somehow.
And I learned to French braid as a kid and wore it all the time, still makes me feel like I'm 10 again :silly:

I think it depends on the purpose of the braid. For regular braids, French. I just feel like a Dutch braid on me would look like some weird raised seam running down my head. I think some people pull it off better than others, though as sometimes I waver on which I prefer, and I think it just depends on the picture I happen to be looking at at the time. For crown braids, I think I prefer Dutch because, well, it looks more like a crown!

I haven't a clue which works for my hair better, because I think I've only had my hair French-braided MAYBE two or three times in my entire life, and Dutch, never, I think.

Unfortunately, I can't French-braid my own hair to save my life. I tried once and discovered the difference between the two-- for French, you cross the free/outside section over the top of the middle section. For Dutch you cross it underneath. I always keep my hair in an English braid and tend to cross underneath. So when i tried to French braid I came out with a Dutch instead. Trying to cross the free section over the top felt foreign anyway, and when I combined it with trying to pull sections out from my hair to add to the braid and trying to remember what I'd done and what I hadn't... too much "new" stuff at once and I got totally confuzzled, lol. Need to learn to change my style of English braiding before I learn to French braid, i guess! It would probably also be easier to learn if I could practice on someone else to get the idea of it firmly in my head before I try to do it to myself, but I don't really know anyone else with long hair, and I certainly wouldn't be comfortable asking someone else "hey can I mess around with your hair?" (When I was in elementary school I'd always see girls asking each other, "can I play with your hair?" and I always thought it was really weird...)

July 25th, 2012, 10:33 AM
Aesthetically speaking, I like them both the same. Practically speaking, I end up using French braids more often because they stay neat on my head for longer than Dutch braids. This is particularly true of a single braid down the back. The Dutch braid loosens at the base very quickly for me. I think it has to do with the shape of my head or something.

sparrowswing
July 25th, 2012, 11:16 AM

July 26th, 2012, 04:57 AM
I like dutch because they make my hair look thicker and they are also easier to unravel. I find them both the same 'easiness', but the dutch requires less attention to keeping tension and so is more relaxed to braid

To be honest I like them both!! but for some reason the Dutch one works very well for me :D , I still remember back in days when I was still learning about the French and Dutch braid, was complicated at that time but with the help of youtube and blogs, eventually I got it!! Lately I was checking online blogs and websites about Dutch and French braid and found this blog talking about Dutch braid vs French braid (http://myhairbraiding.com/dutch-braid-vs-french-braid/), I found it very informative and helpful, fun to to read! looking to try new different styles soon!

Aesthetically I generally prefer dutch braids, but on my current length they always "shred" so I've been only doing french braids lately. Maybe I should try dutch again, it's been a few months.
I only learned how to do both last year, after years and years of just not *getting* it. Always seemed like witchcraft to me! Not to mention how keeping my arms up that long is torture, even now.

I find Dutch braids with their free section on the outside and accessible to be much easier

Dutch for me. Holds my hair in better and my hands are more used to it. I can french if i concentrate though. I actually didn't realize there was a difference until I tried to braid someone else's hair for the first time and realized that when my hands aren't behind my head they want to cross over instead of under. I looked it up and found out there were different names for over vs under braiding.

Ah, for me it's very much an "it depends" answer. I like the look of both, I like the way both hold; a French braid is my default since it's what I learned first. If I'm drying my hair in a braid I prefer Dutch for nicer braidwaves. If I'm wearing it up in a braided bun I prefer French since it's smoother.

I first learned how to Dutch braid and I still prefer it. I mainly do French braids for the braided pinless.

I have yet to be able to do a Dutch braid on my hair.

I don't really do French or Dutch braids anymore because my hair is so long that I dread the thought of the tangles I would have to undo every time I grab a new little section... But when my hair was shorter I'd prefer Dutch braiding. It's easier for me, and I like the look with the braid on the outside.

I've wondered if a Dutch braid only accentuates thin hair.

I like both, but I voted Dutch because I prefer that look on myself. It makes my hair look thicker and I like the shape in the back better, the top of the french braid tends to get lost in my hair type, I guess because it lays flatter against the head.

Exactly this. I prefer Dutch braids on myself for this reason, though I'll occasionaly try doing a French braid so I don't lose my skills.

I find the French braid doesn't hold my hair very well, Dutch braids work better for me.

I don't have a preference in appearance but I prefer to french braid because it is easier to do on myself. Whenever i have a stylist do it, I always ask for a dutch crown braid because it holds better and I can't do those yet.

You can actually have a stylist do your hair without destroying it?

I can do a French, but still trying to learn to do the Dutch.

I like dutch because my hair is fine and thin--dutch gives the appearance of more volume. However, I typically wear french as a protective style to sleep as I think it causes less friction being smoother and closer to my scalp.

I find french braids to be more comfortable for me -- both during braiding and while wearing! My mom prefers dutch braids so I'm trying to learn so I can do them for her. :)

Dutch all day! Much more secure in my hair than French, no matter what length more hair is.

Dutch- I like the 3d effect they give.

A Dutch is much easier to do, no getting my fingers tangled, just using my thumbs, but I also like the look of the French, much flatter.

I like the look of both and I find both equally easy so I voted for both.

I answered "I like both the same" I don't know when...probably before I could do either

Now that I actually do them on myself, I find Dutch a lot easier. I get almost no tangles compared to French braiding, which starts to knot after every pass. But if I can put in the time to struggle through a French braid, I love how it looks.

I prefer dutch braids during the day and french braids if I'm sleeping in them. Really I like both but french braids tend to slip on me more than dutch braids.

I prefer dutch braid because it has a more outstanding look, you can spot one from far away. French braid can look very generic sometimes.

I prefer the French braid, at least on myself, I feel like it's looking more harmonic on me 😊
