View Full Version : How do you join double dutch braids?

Of course I didn't give this any thought until I was holding one braid at the nape and realized I had to have a way of keeping it intact until I had braided the other side and that I will never be Zaphod Beebelbrox.
I ended up clipping the braid as well as the individual sections with those large metal stylist clips and took out one clip at a time and added the freed section of one of the sections from the braid in my other hand. It looks tidy but the final product has a slight twist in it so the length of the braid lays on its edge rather than flat.
How do you join double dutch braids? Should I not worry about keeping the original sections in the first braid separate when adding the first braid to the second or is there a particular way of joining them to avoid that twist? What tools do you use?
Thank you!

realized ... that I will never be Zaphod Beebelbrox.
Hahaha! Just be thankful you're not the bowl of petunias!
Sorry, no advice. I'd do what you already said you did. Maybe try braiding slightly looser or tighter to get around that bend.

There's 3 different ways I can think of to do it. You could either twist the braids together down the lengths like a rope braid, bun the lengths, or if you think you can do it, you could make the 6 sections into 3 sections and braid it the rest of the way down. The first 2 are, obviously, the easiest.

Bring each braid from the side so that they converge together at the nape area. Hold them so they lay flat, side by side, and clip both with one long barrette.
Undo the hair below the barrette and divide in three sections.
Braid the hair slightly (one section).
Remove the barrette and then braid your next section and continue braiding down until you reach the ends.
There's also another method to join braids but it is a bit trickier.

I braid the first braid a little past where I want to join the braids and clip all three sections together with a barrette that I can remove with one hand. Then I braid the other side to where I want them to join. I take the two outer sections (the ones closer to my ear) and join them together. I use my pinky and ring fingers of one hand to hold the now two sections of the second braid while I take the barrette out with the other hand. Then I gently and carefully undo a bit of the first braid so the three sections are easier to find. (I use my free hand as well as the thumb and forefinger from my other hand to do this.) I again join the two outer sections together and then combine the inner section from each braid. This leaves me with three sections. From there, I braid as normal.

Thank you for the suggestions! Bookmarking this to read back through the next time I want to play with my hair.

be thankful you're not Zaphod; you'd have to braid your hair twice!

I totally want to try all these variations, but my stupid neck is thrown out. I may even sleep with my hair loose tonight instead of my french or dutch braid. I just don't want to hold my arms up.

I think I do it pretty similarly to LornaDoone, but I often just hold the extra braid in my mouth til I'm ready for it lol. I also do this with 5 strand or more french braids. Just not enough hands!
I was thinking you could either join the outer 2, the middle 2 and the other outer 2, or maybe you could just lay one over the other? I've never tried that, might be interesting.
