help! how do I keep my roots blk!?

Yes I know box dye is very very bad lol now that's out of the way I need help from those who do use box dye :) my hair is naturally ash brown but I have been dying it black forever. I seem to always have issues with my roots! They never turn black but more of a dark brown that eventually lightens and looks horrible :( help! What dye can I use to turn my roots black? Any advice?
