For example I see some beautiful pictures from India, girls have brightly colored ribbons in their hair ! They look really cute :)

Do people wear ribbons and bows, where you live ?

Lovely pictures! Thanks for sharing.

I think you're more likely to see more hairbows and ribbons on young kids.

The people of India have a tradition of long hair and tend to have more hair ribbons and such (as compared to Americans).

The only other culture where I've seen hair ribbons is the Mexican ladies..the lovely ribbons wound thru braids of the ladies and girls when they celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

My 15yo has started wearing bowed pigtails to school sometimes. She has a few other funky bows she puts on the side of her head if she's wearing particular outfits.

You see younger girls wearing them for special occasions here (though the above pictures also look like it's a special occasion). I guess more girls in India have long hair (by our standards) :)

And my hair wouldn't even make half a thick as braid as those girls have two of D=

In the South, our girls athletics sometimes where them, especially cheerleaders and softball players.

Straight ribbon, yes- usually as a headband. Not bows so often, except the cheerleaders.

I agree with athletic girls in high school in the US wearing ribbons; that's what they did at my high school.

In Russia girls traditionally wear huge bows from 1st-4th grade. Here's a photo I found on google images that depicts what they typically look like:
http://www.tulipgirl.com/mt/archives/DSCN0984.JPG

ETA: I wore my hair that way a couple of times -- you get these special gauzy type ribbons which are really long, then tie into bows upon bows upon bows and fluff them out so that they lie prettily on one another. :)

When I was little, I used to wear thick yarn hair bows in my pig tails (ala Buffy from Family Affair). As I got older, the figure eight hair ties with the beads on the ends were all the rage. In junior high, we used to take the barrettes that look like two parallel lines and weave thin satin ribbon onto them in a herringbone pattern. (I found a tutorial if anyone is feeling nostalgic: http://remarkablydomestic.com/?p=1261)

Anyway, I think hair bow fashions come and go. These days it seems to be the snap-clips with little rosettes on the ends that are popular - I know of at least one person in real life who makes and sells these online, and does quite well at it.

They are cute, but, as my parents and I used to joke, sometimes the bows look bigger than the girls' heads!

I think I only wore my hair like this a couple of times, because a family friend did it since my mother didn't know how . . . I remember being really proud of them, but I think they were a bit scratchy. I'd also imagine that they would be difficult to wear if you wanted any sort of headgear/hood to stay on. :D

Wow, you brought me back to my youth with this post. I too used to wear the yarn ribbon on pigtails and the ponytail holders with the big beads. I forgot all about the barrettes with satin ribbon (I used to wear them when we went skating at the roller rink :D).

Yeah - I love those! And I also wear mine like that sometimes (with a secure one in thinner material underneath, so I dont loose them). I have all sorts of these guys. I make them myself in different materials I find in second hand shops.

But most of the time I go with something like this:
http://tinyurl.com/6dmh4m7
http://tinyurl.com/627a5tx
I think I have a serious collector mania for those. :cheese: One for each color, one for each mood, then some with spots or in leather with metal stuff ... I started to use them when they came in fashion somewhere around the late 60:ies or early 70:ies and never stopped using them. Some of my friends also wear them, but I dont think they are that common except for teens.

^ I'm sorry but those looks so goofy!! They are so big, I would think they are hats! lmaolmaolmao. I guess I'm more into dainty bows than anything. In Asia, it's very popular to wear those headbands with a single bow on the side. I love headbands, but for the life of me, could not find any headbands that did nt have bows on them when I was last in China.

Probably most of the ribbons or bows I see are worn by little girls, but I think if anyone wants to wear something they feel is flattering to them, they should go ahead and do it.

I'm kind of surprised to see them on girls who are as old as the ones you linked to; I guess they still do it for some formal occasions. I think they look a lot cuter when they're on younger girls. :)

The ones that you linked to are all of the variety that are pre-made and have clips attached to the back, so you can just barrette them in place. The more traditional ones are the ones that I described, which are actually long strands of ribbon that you tie one on top of the other.

Generally bows are only worn here by young girls, or teenagers into 'scene' fashion. I can't remember the last time I saw one on an adult here, or even if I ever have.

I tend to think of them as something worn by younger girls and that it's not done as much once they hit their teenage years.

One thing you'll notice is that in all those pictures in the original post, all the girls wear matching ribbons. It's part of the school uniform.

I never see bows or ribbons. I actually like ribbons a lot, my mom used to put ribbons in my hair all the time when I was little. I just like that they are simple, colorful, and versatile.

I was thinking about getting some and figuring out if maybe there's a way I could wear them that doesn't look too childish. I'm sure I could make them work as headbands. I also like them woven through a braid--it's a nice way to add color and doesn't look to childish, I don't think. I also like them as a non damaging braid ender, but I don't exactly want a bow at the end so maybe there's a less conspicuous way to tie them.

When I was young, during the hippy days, we wore all sorts of stuff in our hair: yarn, bows, flowers ;)
Lady golfer Paula Creamer wears pink bows woven and tied in her long hair - mostly in a pony and sometimes with what look to be pink extensions added in. Fun!
Most of us in my neck of the woods leave the bright ribbons to the little girls and go more for combs or pins.

I understand...but like the ones in the first link I see the bows are attached on elastic bands, not on barrettes....I guess it is easier to secure bows on a ponytail ,if they have elastics instead of a clip/barrette ,right?

The only bows I see around my town are the small discreet ones attached to fine head bands, and that's just a fashion item at the moment.
I sometimes wear a big silly bow in my hair when I have to take old people on tours. It's just so they remember me and don't get on the wrong bus!

Awwwwwwwww, where did you get THAT? Want!

I, too, do braid ribbons in when I make braids and tie them in a bow, either I leave it there as single hair decoration, and I think that's not too much, or I bun it up, so others do not see the bow but only the hint of colour. A young girl recently asked me if I had dyed green streaks into my hair.

I saw a woman today with a gorgeous updo just COVERED with ribbons and silk flowers. It was absolutely beautiful! I think she was part of a performance troupe at the art festival I was attending, though.

Only slightly off topic: Oh my, the hair I saw there today! One woman had the most wonderful long dreads pulled up into double buns, another woman had waist length dark blonde hair with streaks in all shades of the rainbow, there were plenty of hennaheads, and one person with an interesting updo that I'm pretty sure was in the middle of a deep oiling (though I didn't have the guts to ask her). The hair was almost as good as the art!

In my home country, the native women wear a lot of ribbons in their hair during festivals. I was born in Coban, a small little province in Guatemala. I personally never wore my hair like this because I was raised in the capital and never really partook in Coban festivities. :(

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RD-jQKamihU/TY4TQZf7WaI/AAAAAAAAAQA/DPdzK_YLraE/s320/IMG_0881.jpg

Mom was more fond of doing my hair like the little girl in this picture (she's got the red ribbons.) during special occassions, like the Virgin of Guadalupe festival (Dec 12). I would be decked in my corte and huipil (like in India, you can tell where a particular person comes from depending on what they are wearing. In our case, we knew which province a girl came from based on the pattern of her skirt, the corte, and the embroidery on her shirt, the huipil). She would then braid my hair in two and add ribbon along the bottom half, then tie it in big bows.

http://www.fotopaises.com/Fotos-Paises/t500/2011/3/26/8396_1301100570.jpg

Sometimes she'd fold up the braids and tie them like the pictured girl. Sometimes she would french braid the pleats and let them hang over my shoulders, with the big ribbons hanging at my hips. (I had really long hair as a kid). I preferred the second option because then I had something to entertain myself with during mass.

I loved wearing my traditional garb, though. It is quite comfortable... and the food during these festivals is amazing.

Man, I wish I could be in Guatemala for Christmas again some day.

ETA: I wish I had my own pictures to share. The pose for these festivals was very traditional. Girls are often photographed at a loom, grinding flour or making tortillas. Boys are often standing next to a donkey or carrying hay. The colors are vibrant and somewhere, somewhere, the Virgin is added -- usually wherever the kids had to look to per the photographer's directions.

ETA 2: AHA! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-irmTKeWyjGs/TjzgBYoZ4GI/AAAAAAAAEE0/_L2X4YvKmHs/s250/DSC_6225.jpg

This is how my mom often decorated my braids. Since she is older, she has a single braid and a head piece. I never wore either as I was much too young and then we left the country before then. :D

This thread makes me want to go buy ribbon!

This explains it so much better. I wear ribbons when playing sports. Blue and green uniform = blue and green ribbons. Parents of little kids I babysit request I put little ribbons in their hair to match their dresses. (You know how to braid and can do it so well etc.) I'm gonna start charging >_<.

When I was in elementary school I would wear ribbons to school every day. It was part of the school uniform. It was either tied to my hair or it was attached to my headband. That was a Turkish school, but I live in Canada now.

I say if you like it, wear it. If you feel confident others will follow your lead and you will make a new fashion in your school.

I like ribbons. I still wear ribbons in my hair sometimes. Around my neck too. I am considering tying it to my shoes too when I have to wear hells. That could make them more comfortable, like this: http://www.wikihow.com/Add-Homemade-Ankle-Straps-to-High-Heels. I was thinking red or black on black.

Try a craft or fabric store. They have a wide selection of ribbons.

My mom likes to burn the tips ever so slightly with a lighter. She gets the ribbon close enough to the flame to get the fibers to melt together but not too close for them to be singed black or catch fire.

I've tried a small row fabric glue on the dull side of the ribbon. I dab it on with a q tip

I do remember wearing it to keep braid tight at night in the hope of growing my hair long (as advised by my Grand ma):D and indeed I had waist length thick and healthy hair when I reached teens :p

Aww miss those days

Girls in the cities do not wear ribbons anymore? just in villages you mean?

Yes lots where I live, but it tends to be girls under 12 years old. I never see this on adult women.

I was inspired by this thread today and bought some ribbon when I went to Walmart! Now I'm sporting a nice red ribbon interwoven through an English braid, and tied off with a bow. :D

this is from Russia ...

I wear ribbons all the time, very rarely see anyone else wearing them. I either braid them into the length of a braid or tie them in a bow at the top of a ponytail or the end of a braid.
I keep the ends from fraying by running an old soldering iron across the cut edge.

I generally think of ribbons as being for little girls. In my real life, I've never seen someone over the age of 13 wear one. But I've seen some lovely fashion photos with glossy hair wrapped with a simple ribbon, used as a headband, or woven into an updo.
I often wanted to wear ribbons as a little girl, but my hair is very slippery, and they would just slide off and be lost.

Nice find! Yeah, those are exactly the types of ribbons I was talking about (that I wore) in the first photo.

The video is talking about a new boarding school that is opening for girls who are the daughters of career military people. Apparently they have a school uniform, which you can see in the video (it's their formal outfit). :)

I too saw a woman with dreads today. She had blond, quite long dreads. Impressive. I talked to her for a while and she told me about them, it was entirely her own hair, no extensions. They were tucked together and bunned somehow. It looked absolutely magnificent! Sometimes I whish I could get away with something fancy like this, but I'm at least 50 years too old for it and also have the wrong job for it. :o Perhaps someday I will muster the courage to do something really outrageous with my red (or natural white) hair.

I have only ever met one woman and one man, who had ribbons in their hair. For myself it's no use really, my hair is too slippry most of the time. I have some pre-tied ribbons with clips though that I wear at special occasions. People often stare at this, because it is very uncommon here. I usually say: "I was around the last time it was modern, so I kept them" :grnbiggri

So because military people wear uniforms, their daughters wear their own ones too, right ? because they all look the same, even hair is done same way ! I have never worn a hair bow , but those white bows I like, they are cute.... So you had same type of ribbons ? I noticed the girl in video tied them in her hair with elastic bands.

Yeah, I guess that's why the girls' school uniforms look so...uniformish. :)
In general, though, in Russia in public schools everyone is required to wear the school uniform of dark (black) pants/skirt, and white blouses. I got in trouble once for wearing a cream sweater rather than an actual blouse. :p

As for the ribbons, they do look really similar to the ones I wore, although I only wore ribbons a few times. I wish I could remember better...:o

Apparently I one here who does not like that huge fake bows that little girls wear in Russian school. I always felt stupid with it in my childhood and prefered real bows made of tied ribbons. Such a pity that I never see girls with it now.

They're definitely not my style either. 95% of the time, I favor minimal decoration on my hair stuff. And most of the remaining 5%, I still want the decoration to be subtle.
