View Full Version : "Markers" in different places for different people

I made this picture when I was bored the other day
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8101&pictureid=115286
and it got me to thinking about how large the gaps between shoulder and APL and APL and BSL are on me compared to BSL to waist and waist to hip. Admittedly I am tilting my shoulders somewhat in this picture but you can still see it's still a massive difference. This means I won't have anywhere near as much of a wait to get to waist as I have to get to BSL. In fact looking at the picture now I'd say the narrowest part of my waist my actually be a little higher than I've drawn it :cheese:

I've also heard people talk on the boards about how their waist and hip or hip and tailbone are pretty much in the same place.

Where are your "milestone lines"? What are the biggest and smallest distances between them? Pictures?

ETA on 5 October: Now the uploads are fixed I've uploaded this photo to my LHC albums and changed the image URL. Several people had trouble seeing the picture before, hopefully now they will be able to!

I love the thread idea. :) I dug through my photos - I could only find one of me, full body, from the back, and it's an oldie from July 2008, but here we go:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=9822&pictureid=126825
(Yes, I am still that fat.)

I think it should show up, but let me know if it doesn't. :) The marker for BSL is for the top of the bra strap, not the bottom, but still - that explains why the mid-back abyss seemed to take forever for me!

Hmm, I can see my own photo but not yours. I wonder if this problem is connected with the photo upload problems the site has been having recently?

My APL to BSL ratio is WAY bigger than my BSL to waist ratio (as you can see in my siggy pic). I have a long upper torso. APL to BSL is a good 6-7 inches where as BSL to waist is only 3 or 4. I can't wait to get to BSL, then waist will be just right around the corner! Shoulder to BSL is going to be a long road for me though! Heck, I will be happy to hit shoulder! Pixie to shoulder is taking forever because I have a really long neck!!!

I think everyone's marker measurements would be different since we are all shaped differently. (Although I am sure that there will be some people who share similar body types)

Apl to BSL is quite fat away for me. But the BSL to waist and then hip and pretty close. I'm only 5"1.5 but I think I have a long upper torso.

I do think a lot of people wear bras incorrectly too. The band should not be under your armpits :-/

I can't see pictures. I've been having a heck of a problem seeing pictures lately and also I can't upload to show you. :( Anyway, the long distance between APL and BSL is driving me insane. I know it's growing but it doesn't feel like it. And yes, once I get to BSL then midback and waist will be there so soon! I'm just impatient for BSL.

I still see no picture, Becky.
I only see pepperminttea's picture.

On my body, flip length (just skimming the tops of shoulders) to APL, and APL to BSL are the biggest 'steps'. And they're about the same. About 5 inches from flip to APL; about 3 and a half to 4 inches from APL to BSL.

BSL to Waist is only 2 1/2 to 3 inches, at most.

And Waist to Tailbone is even less... maybe 2 inches, if that much.

Tailbone to hip is no more than about an inch or an inch an a half.

Evalea
September 8th, 2011, 06:08 PM
I think BSL to Waist is the biggest for me - 6 inches. I have a really long torso. APL to BSL is around 4-5 inches. Classic to knee will be a huge one as well; I also have long legs!

I thought tailbone was below hip?
Honestly, I have no idea where tailbone is. There's no obvious landmark that I can find. Confused...

Tailbone is literally your tailbone. It's that bit of bone right before your butt separates into 2 cheeks. If you let your finger move down your spine it is the last bit of bone. Here's a pic: http://therhnegativefactor.webs.com/coccyx.jpg

Ooh, this is fun to compare!

APL to BSL isn't all that long on me, BSL to waist a little longer. I find hip length really hard to define, but with the way I define it waist to hip seems to be my biggest gap.

For me:

_Lengths_
APL: 20"
BSL: 25"
Waist: 29"
Hip: 34"
Tb: 38"
Classic: 41"
Knee: 53"

So pretty evenly spaced, 4" or 5". Classic to knee is going to be rough on my limited patience if I decide to go that long. 2 years of growth and no milestones . . . Yikes.

Okay, I think this is just too much fun...I love making diagrams! :D Had to look a bit to find a decent almost-full body shot of my back, this one is 2 yrs old but my body's pretty much the same :p

Other relevant data - I'm 170 cm / 5'7" and I have lots of shoulder!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/pingvingvild_/diagram.jpg

For what it's worth... the distances apl-bsl, bsl-waist and waist-hip are about the same, between 4-5 inches (bsl is at ~27). I haven't measured from hip to tbl and I guesstimated that and classic in the picture. The distance tbl-classic is around 6-7 inches, so I think I misplaced tbl a bit!

Oooh I'll play! Here's an old picture of me that I slapped some lines on. It's from last May. I'm wearing a baggy shirt, but you can see that shoulder to APL and BSL to waist are my two biggest gaps. I am currently whiling away in obscurity between BSL and waist. I'm probably to the top of the hole in the six now. Everything after that is pretty evenly spaced, thanks to a high waist. I'm 5'3".

http://i53.tinypic.com/2hfoox5.jpg

ETA: boyfriend rolled over in bed while I was making this image and sleepily said, "Why are you putting stripes on yourself?" and I just petted him on the head and said "Hair forums, darling" and he rolled over and went back to sleep without another word.

So I probably need a picture at less of a weird angle than this one (and yes, this picture is indeed probably a candidate for "You know you live in Texas when...), but this is the only one I have from behind that shows even where my waist is, let alone further down. But it's at least evident that waist to hip on me is next to nothing, but BSL to waist is a horribly long way.

Well, actually, if you're going by "true waist" (i.e. waist as is defined for dressmaking and suchlike) your BSL to waist is even shorter. Your true waist, going by that photo, is at the bottom of your right arm.

True waist is the narrowest point on your torso, between your hips and your bust.

:lol: Okay, this statement just makes me laugh as I imagine my own shape. I was shaped like that apple they talk about, so I never could tell when my hair was waist length. I lost 50 pounds so I can see a waist line now. I think hip length hair is what I have, but again, 50 pounds less gave me a fairy saggy figure make me wonder if my hips are the same one day to the next. Tail bone seems a bit vague to me, never having had much of a behind.

I made one of these a while ago, but that's on my laptop (which is out of commission atm). BSL, as in covering the bra band, is only 2.5" above waist on me, but 5.5" below APL. Because I'm impatient and the area between APL and BSL is my least favourite length, I insist on measuring three BSL measurements. The first is actually the base of my shoulderblades, but it seems a good place to measure to because it's easy to find at seems to be close to BSL on a lot of other people.

Anyway, here are my measurements:

chin: 15"
shoulder: 19"
APL: 21"
uBSL: 23"
mBSL (that is, touching the top of the band): ~25.5"; both BSL measurements are a bit wonky as it depends on the bra.
lBSL: ~26.5"
waist: 29"
hip: 33"

Hmm, I can see my own photo but not yours. I wonder if this problem is connected with the photo upload problems the site has been having recently?

I can never see pictures IMG-posted from Facebook links. I'm not sure if it's my browser (I use Google Chrome) or if it's my AdSweep that removes ads from websites, but I don't even see the "red X" placeholder -- I see *nothingness*.

Whenever I see someone talking about a photo that doesn't exist (for me), I use the "quote" button to reply, which then shows the URL of the photo that is between the IMG tags. I then copy that URL (Becky9679's is below) and open it in another tab and it shows up perfectly fine then.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/301482_2453230929291_1207567293_33076289_6553270_n .jpg

Hope that helps others who can't see some of the photos. I know that photos linked from LHC albums are only viewable to people whose accounts have been upgraded after hitting the "25 quality posts" mark, but a lot of the "invisible" pictures are instead Facebook-linked instead of LHC album-linked.

Which should be a warning to people who want everyone to see their pictures when they post in a thread -- use a hosting site like Photobucket or Flickr or similar if you want the photo visible in general. Or post just the link without the IMG tags, so people can easily click-thru to see your photo. If you only want LHCers with 25+posts to see your photo, use a link to your photo linked in an LHC album.

Absolutely "markers" vs. actually measurement length differs from person to person.

I've been keeping my hair just above waist. But my hair on many other people would be classic length.
For example, "waist length" would be just as much of an accomplishment as "classic" for some people.

So no one person should feel down about someone else taking less time to get to a certain "marker" (ie: It took me ____years to grow to waist length).

This thread is fascinating. It's something I notice a lot when I'm just observing people and I'm out and about. I was going to upload a pic, but it won't let me now.

The biggest marker difference I notice between myself and other people is chin to shoulder. My chin would be at 12" and my shoulder is at 19.5"! So that's 7.5" of growth, or roughly a year with trims to get through awkward stages.

21" APL

25" BSL

31" Waist

40" Tailbone

Having an hourglass figure just introduces new problems. I have yet to encounter a clothing store, besides a few expensive speciality ones for big busts, that sells clothes in which my bust is the same size as my waist and hips. I'm actually small-busted for an hourglass, too.

I think I also have a short torso, but it seems like everything is pretty much the same distance apart- with the exception of BSL-Waist which is somewhat shorter and then Waist to Hip looks like it might be just a little longer... but IDK. Its all such a small difference it is hardly worth commenting.

However- if these lines are correct, then I am almost Hip :cheese: and then another 6 inches or so to TBL :D

Your 'proper weight' might be smaller than me, then. I consider my chest to be on the smaller side for an hourglass because my bust is about an inch, occasionally even two inches, smaller than my hips (which are 10" bigger than my waist). So proportion-wise it's small for an hourglass figure as it's only 8-9" larger than my waist and is a little smaller than my hips.

Here's mine, current french braidwaves included. Thank goodness I went through shoulder to APL as a kid though. I didn't care at the time, but I would hate to have to do it now. My midback abyss is pretty large too, but I'm not that far away from waist anyway. My hair is starting to grow again now that summer is over (I always stall in summer). As much as I love my shorter hair, being on the LHC is tempting me into growth-loving phase again. The top of my hip-bones are actually ever so slightly above the line actually. I went through that gap in 4 months last winter :shocked: I didn't realise it was such a big gap.
TBL is just the tiniest bit off the page.

Please don't ask where my pictures are - somewhere between the computer & the internet, my hair shots have gone into hiding. I regard my figure as being ample & in proportion: then squashed downwards by motherhood & time & one too many chocolate biscuits. :o
The distance between waist & hip is short. I couldn't grow it in a day without playing with chin angles, but when I get to waist, I know hip is near. Meantime, while I persist in wearing bras that I know are not the right size, the whole BSL bit is something of a herring. Now my braid elastic scritches below the strap has been, I'm pretty sure I'm past BSL but I'm more or less living with it up by day at the moment so it may have sneaked another centimetre downwards. :D

I could be wrong but I think your hip line is a little higher than where some people call hip. You have made it where your body starts to go out from the waist, but I know some people call hip where the hipbone sticks out which I think is a little further down. Is that the same place for you? I know hip is taking forever on me but I'm measuring it different again. I have these little dimples at the top of my butt and I'm growing until my hair touches the dimples.

But you are definitely right, it's totally different for everyone. I'm "blessed" with a long torso so everything is taking that much longer for me.

If you want to make it even more confusing, the hip joint - where your femur hooks into your pelvis - is lower than tailbone, but might be a bit higher, lower or at the same place as classic, depending on the shape of your butt. Ah the variability of the human body!

Nice to see some other long-torso'ed folks on here! Out of curiosity, I did some measuring and here's what I came up with. Note that this makes no allowances for wurls that bounce up as they dry -- the actual length of hair I would need to reach each marker is quite a bit more.

Shoulder: 17.5"
APL: 22.5"
BSL: 27"
Waist: 32"
Hip: 35"
TBL: 39"
Classic: 45"

All measurements are done starting at hairline and going over the top/back of the head, which is why classic is nearly 4 feet long on me. (Well, that and my giraffe spine.)

My dry hair, stretched, is currently about 21", but I need quite a bit more than 1.5" of growth to be properly at APL! Sigh.

Your measurements are almost exactly like mine!! (Although I haven't actually measured anything below hip :) ) How tall are you? I am 5'7".

My BSL is when my nipples are completely covered and WL is when my boobs are completely covered. I don't measure from behind :D

Here is my pic. Classic would be just below where the picture cuts off.

My upper torso is pretty short, but when you start getting below the waist line the milestones get further and further apart. I'm 5'6" but have a 33" inseam. Long legs, short torso. I can't stand high-waisted pants, they tend to sit just under my boobs. I wear pants/skirts on my hips to make my torso seem longer...

I have a 31/32" inseam and I'm only five foot! So I have a very short torso I guess. :o

Kayla I love your mirror! The vine and flower design is pretty :)

I'm inspired to make one of these marker pictures... the length of my hair according to a tape measure in inches (last I measured it was 26.5), my feeling of where my hair is, and the way it looks are all three very different things...it's kind of frustrating. I posted two pictures tonight in my Braids, Length, etc album that explain my issue.

I'll attempt to get a marker picture up here tomorrow sometime after classes ^_^

It's because people don't wear properly fitted bras arghghhgahghaghhweagw.

It's a huge pet peeve of mine. I totally want to do a 'what not to wear' and lure women into bra shops where they'll be properly fitted.

I guess it's kind of like the straight hair / curly hair issue... the curlies want straight and the straights want curly! :lol:

Okay, so maybe the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence! :p

i only want straight when I am trying to measure *wink* but I love my curls the rest of the time...

O this seems like fun, fun to see all difference and not just read about different lenth :), just took a photo (camera timer is best XD) and marked out all lines. I am a small girl for being a swede (~63inch tall) so all clothes get big on my thorso.

It took forever(sloooow hairgrowth) from shoulder to apl, but it takes forever from bsl to waist to think I putted the bsl line a bit low :P. I dont think I will grow my hair down all marks but it was fun to mark out :D

Thank you!! It was a gift for my mom and dads wedding. I found it wrapped up in my grandma's attic (they separated when I was 3) and I begged to have it!! Mom happily agreed and said she was glad I had a use for it. I've always been in love with it <3

Lucky! You know what that means....Hair looks longer faster! :cheese:

I'm 5'8 with equally proportioned legs and torso. Sometimes people tell me I have long legs, but I don't think they're anything special for my height because my torso seems neverending in these length photos! Long torso = sloooow hair growth, gah

I've noticed the distance between shoulder and APL differs for most people. For me it's a long distance. I'm always stuck between shoulder and APL, like right now. :p

Here's mine! For reference, I am 5'9" and most of my height is in my legs (as you can see from my short-ish torso).

Of course, these lengths would be for straight hair. To get to the actual markers I need to grow about 3" more because of the curls.

Thanks for this thread! The lovely pepperminttea directed me to it.

Here's mine :) I didn't mark SL, but as you can see, it's the furthest for me also, closely followed by APL to BSL then WL to HL. I was just past shoulder length in April, and am now at APL, so thankfully, I'm past that first hurdle!

(The wet hair pics are a bit more accurate in terms of markers)

Shld:13"
APL:16"
BSL:19.5"
WL:24"
Hip:26"
TBL:33"
Clsc:40"
Knee:57"

Measurements from crown of head on 5'6" female Homo Sapiens Sapiens, I have the weirdest torso dimensions ever.

I find it really interesting to read everyone's measurements.

I'm 5'2 and BSL is 24", WSL: 29, Hip 34, TB 37 and classic 42.

Am I measuring wrong, or do you have insanely long legs?!

I measured from the crown, not the hairline, hence the 5-6" difference.

I think a lot of people mix waist up with hip, there's no way they are in the same place! My markers are in the same proportion as the op, with similar gaps, it is easier once you get to waist, the growth although the same seems a lot quicker, I'm just dreading getting to classic from here, it's a long way to grow!

APL=24" (current length)
BSL=27"
MBL=31"
WL=36"
TBL=41"

So assuming a 1/2"/month growth rate (I actually have no idea what mine actually is), I should reach...

BSL=March 2018
MBL=November 2018
WL=September 2019
TBL=July 2020

...Give or take. I'm 5' 7" but have a loooong torso. Once I get to classic though it should be pretty smooth sailing :p
