View Full Version : I had more split ends AFTER getting my hair cut? Help?

I got my haircut for the first time in a while (I think over 6 months), and I have way more splits ends now than I did before (she cut off about an inch).

I'm wondering if getting hair cut makes the cuticle more susceptible to splits. Do babies get split ends if they have never had a haircut? Should I just stop getting haircuts and experiment for a while while I let my damaged hairs fall out and be replaced by uncut new ones?

Does anybody have any advice/insight/opinions about this split end fiasco?

The only things i can think of is you either had more damage than you thought and had splits further up the hair shaft or your hair stylist used blunt scissors; trimming is the only way to get rid of splits and should not cause more.

I think you probably had the splits but they were hiding in your length. When you got the ends cut, the splits became more obvious.

Some believe that an uncut hair is less likely to split, but it doesn't seem true in my experience. Quite often, I find splits on newer, shorter hairs that have never been cut.

I got my hair trimmed once, and got more splits. But that was because the splits were mainly on the shorter pieces of hair, and as I get a blunt cut, these don't get cut. Add that to the double shampooings (I only normally use diluted shampoo once week on my scalp only), the wet combing (I normally leave until completely air dry), the blowfryer after cutting (never usually bother), and the serums they like to attempt to put in my hair (they even tried to push the straighteners. Like that's ever going to happen.), and those poor shorter strands which don't get cut are being a bit battered I think. My current stylist ( I say current, but I rarely get my hair cut more that once or twice a year) is much nicer to my hair, but I think from now on I would like to do my own hair, because I still just don't have the money for the salon, and S&D is much more successful in picking out those shorter splitting strands.

I have a friend who has to be careful with her virgin hair. If scizors are not super sharp, she will get splits. She only goes to this one styalist who uses $300. Scizors on her. If you have weaker hair naturally, then trims can cause more damage. Why don't you test this on a tiny spot of hair. Braid a small section. Trim the hairs of this small section. Look at it in a week to see if it is getting more splits. If so, you need to use better scizors. If not, then I would suggest going through your hair hunting and snipping off splits.

Probably bunt scissors. I'd buy a new one (doesn't need to be $300...), trim my hemline about 2mm and do a search and destroy using the twist method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3C0ndGIZpg).
