View Full Version : My Quest for Leonard Whiting Hair

Hello all! I'm a guy who has had short hair for over 90% of my life. I've always admired people with long hair but have never committed long enough to growing my hair out.

I saw the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet the other day and really like the hair of Leonard Whiting, who played Romeo. I've decided I want to grow my hair out and try to achieve the same hairstyle.

First off, here is a picture of me the last time I grew my hair out. Unfortunately, I gave up right after this picture was taken and cut it short. Also, I was only washing my hair once a week and wasn't getting it trimmed enough so it had split ends and was greasy.

Now, here are some pictures of Leonard Whiting's hair-
http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/6486448/220/6486448.jpg (http://picturepush.com/public/6486448)http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/6486449/220/6486449.jpg (http://picturepush.com/public/6486449)http://www2.picturepush.com/photo/a/6486450/220/6486450.jpg (http://picturepush.com/public/6486450)

Currently my hair is very short. I have a long way to go. I'm going to post a photo update around once a month.

If you fine people could answer some questions for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Right now my plan is to shampoo and condition my hair 3 times a week with Mane 'n Tail. I'm going to start taking 5 mg of biotin and 2000 mg of MSM a day so hopefully my hair will grow faster. I'm also going to get my hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to get rid of split ends.

Does this seem like a good plan? Any suggestions are welcome.

My other questions-
1. How long is Leonard Whiting's hair in these photos? I'm just trying to get a timetable for how long it will take me to get that length.
2. Based on my hair type, can I achieve that hairstyle?
3. How does he style his hair in these photos?

Thanks very much everyone :)

DH's hair looks just like his when he's a little overdue for a haircut!
I think part of it is color, texture, thickness.
Fortunately that length comes way quicker than us ladies who want mid back, waste or beyond! I'd say a few months, depending on where you are starting and how many trims you get.

DH get's that front style by wiping his hair to one side when he sweats and by insisting that his stylists don't cut his bangs "straight across like a little boy"

Hi! Welcome to LHC :)

I'm rather new here myself, so I will leave the last two questions to the experts, but I can say that his hair only looks like its 6 inches from root to end. If you have, say, a starting hair cut of 1 inch, it will take you just under a year if your hair grows the average 1/2 inch a month. It will take longer if you get it trimmed regularly, but you would need to trim it anyway to get that shape, so that's up to you. HTH

Also, you do not have your hair type displayed, so its hard to answer your second question.

Thanks! My hair is straight and somewhere between thin and thick. I'm hoping the Mane n' Tail, biotin, and MSM make my hair thicker.

Also, right now the length is probably 1/2 inch

That was my first thought, too!

To the OP: depending on how fast your hair grows, it could take you anywhere from a 4 or 5 months to a year. My advice would be to not trim it as frequently...maybe every 8-10 weeks instead of 6-8. That way you'll get the length faster!

I don't think you need trims at such short lengths - assuming you don't have splits and you're not heat styling or coloring. Just leave it alone for 4-6 months and then take his picture to a hair stylist.

Your hair looks like it will be curlier/wavier than his. I used to straighten my hair at that length by air-drying it with gel combed through it. It only took about half an hour to dry .... less if there was a fan blowing on it. (sigh.....I only wish my hair would dry that fast now.)

Won't the quality of my hair be poor if it's not trimmed for 4-6 months?

My hair is straight. The picture probably makes it look wavy but it's not really.

I trim my hair only once or twice a year, then again I handle it pretty delicately - but yes you can go 6 months easy without a trim and not damage it too much.

Also, welcome and good luck!

Update!

It's been a month since I started the thread and 7 weeks since my last haircut. I'm following everyone's advice and waiting at least 12 weeks between trims.

I've been taking MSM and Biotin. They made my hair thicker but I can't really tell if my hair is growing faster which probably means it's not.

As you can see, my hair is still really short. This picture was taken about a week ago. My hair looks fine in the picture but overall I'm starting to enter the awkward hair phase. Hoping my hair starts to grow faster! If anyone has any tips to get past the awkward phase, let me know, thanks!

Hi and welcome! :) I don't know that there's much to be done about the awkward stage... most of us just try to tie/pin it back or use some product to make it look less unkempt.

As for styling, DH used to have hair a bit longer than Leonard Whiting's. He likes KMS molding paste and Distortion (Joico). They give the hair a piece-y look while avoiding helmet head. Generally this is applied and styled with the fingers. They also work for shorter hair (like DH has currently) so you could get it now and start playing around with it to get a feel for how it works with your hair.

I think your hair looks pretty good for an "awkward phase"! Also, I look at your pics of Mr. Whitling and see Luke from Star Wars! (not that that's bad or anything, just they have similar hair cuts). It looks like you have more texture to your hair then he does. Not sure if that will make an impact, but thought I'd put it out there. Good luck, and post lots of pics!:)

The obvious characteristics of Leonard's hair are pretty much all over same length and lack of layers, coming down long over the ears.

As your hair grows you can begin to shape it. Comb the bangs down toward your brow, swept a bit to one side. Don't trim over your ears--let that grow. As it grows, trim away the curve over the ear.

It's pretty much an early Beatles-style "mop top."

Leonard doesn't wear his hair that way any more. See here (http://click-click-pose.blogspot.com/2011/02/leonard-whiting-olivia-hussey_587.html).

Have fun!

Thanks but what do you mean by trimming the curve over the ear? Also, what do I do with the sideburns and the hair right above the sideburns?

Right now your hair forms a curve around your ear because of your most recent cut. As it grows, you can trim off the longer part of the curve so it has more the shape you want from Leonard's example.

Sideburns are up to you and what you think is most attractive. You can still shave your sideburns and let the hair above it grow over that area. Or you can let your sideburns grow--which is more of a Sixties look.

As your hair gets longer you'll see that it's really an easy process. Just let your hair grow, trim lightly to shape the way you want it. I think that's the way to live through the awkward stage.

It's really a natural process. Relax and enjoy.

Yep, bowl cut. Just have your stylist even the ends as it grows out and shape the hair a bit. Print off a pic of len whiting to show them. He was so hot, back in the day. So was olivia.
