fine roots, medium ends?

I think I have fine hair but the ends are proving me wrong at the moment. Does anybody else experience this? I'm growing out from a pixie & I'm in an inbetween stage (see album). . .Do I need to trim the ends for it to grow healthier? I can't do any protective styling yet as it is too short. I'm wanting to trim the ends because they keep getting rough!

I get these too! It worries me actually, because I've read that when hair is falling out because of male/female pattern baldness the hair strands itself become skinnier and skinnier until it basically becomes nothing, aka bald.
