One style I have used a lot this month (August 2011) is braids that I have looped in various ways. It is a fun kind of updo, and can be both a way to show off skinny braids, a method of disguising rather imperfect braids when you just don't have time to do much more with them, and a practical way of keeping those braids out of the way when that is desired.

So to start off, here are some of mine!
Rope braids: Two skinny ones starting at the front, and a ponytali that was divided and then twisted into rope braids, then looped

English braids and 4-strand round braids.
I started doing a french braid, but did not braid it all the way - I stopped about halfway, tied off with an elastic, and divided the pony in two part. I then made a 4-strand round braid from each of those parts. I then divided the rest of the hair into two parts and did those braids like this: I took the hair from the back on the right side, pulled it upwards and to the left, and did an English braid going upwards and forwards, starting to the left of the end of the French braid.. I then did likewise with the hair on the left, only pulled the hair upwards and to the right.
I then sort of wrapped the beginnings of the English braid around the end of the French braid to conceal the elastic, and fastened with the smaller Flexi. These braids were then falling obliquely towards the front.
I then looped and arranged all the braids to my liking, and fastened them with the larger Flexi.

Another arrangement:
Here I have done a french braid in a stripe from the forehead andd over the crown, but did not braid all the way to the nape. I sectioned off some hair on each side for the narrow braids, and added the rest of the hair to the end of the french braid. I divided that hair into two sections, and English braided each section. I then did the narrow English braids, starting them rather loosely and directing them upwards and backwards. When I had finished all the braids, I first looped and positioned the large braids, then looping and arranging the thin braids on top, before fastening all the braids in place with a Flexi-8

A pair of skinny rope braids on top that have been looped, and are held in place with a lovely vintage comb:

A deceptively simple arrangement, this - two Dutch braids continued into English braids that are looped up and fastened at the crown of my head.

Two Dutch braids that are joined into one and English braided to the end - and two skinny English braids that are looped around and fastened with a Flexi

Alvrodul, I did a simple loopy half-up, but I can't upload pictures to prove it. :) The uploading function has not been working for the past few days. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Great photos!

I really like the look of loopy braids, but usually don't care to put in the time for them. :o
Here is photographic evidence that I've done it, though! :)

Side lace braid into a single English braid which is looped back through the top, along with two accent braids. I think it was called the butterfly braid.
