I want this colour, but I want to make sure it fades back to my original colour completely. I don't want to have to grow it out or wait 6 months. Ideas? I'll definitely do a hairball test, but I'm not sure the best way to do it. Koolaid? Manic Panic?

Manic Panic would probably work the best. If I recall correctly Spidermom used it and her hair returned to normal within a year.

Photoalbums are down, can you give us another link?

I will say that if you don't bleach first, it will fade out. It will take TIME, but most will fade quickly. Beyond the zone unnatural reds, on the other hand, are the exception. I could NOT get that stuff out of my hair, even with repeated bleachings.

EEK! I don't think I want to commit to a year of cherry. Won't I have like 3 inches of ginger roots at the 6 month mark? Scary!

Sure thing, edited the original post. Unnatural reds wouldn't come out of your hair? I guess that includes cherry...worrisome.

Is there any one good way to do a hairball test? How much do you generally need? And is there a good way to test how long it might last?

I've heard a lot of reds fade like mad, but Beyond the Zone candy apple? Would not for me. It went on nice, but it did NOT wash out. Color remover wouldn't budge it. It just would not go.

I ended up with white hair that was, thankfully, short when I started.

I really do believe that's brand specific, though.

Is there a list somewhere?
And what would 'candy apple' zone be? what is beyond that, purpley or orangey?

And what colour do you think I'd need to layer over my ginge? Would it mess it all up?

I looked through Spidermom's album and it seems I was a fair ways off on the guess. I'd feel weird linking the album to you so I'll just suggest it instead.

I went digging for you.

This is the color Beyond The Zone, Candy Apple Red went on my hair.

This is what color remover got me:

This is what bleach (X2) got me:

By time it gave? I was here:

THAT horror show over: I use unnatural colors all the time., still. EVERY other color (N-RAGE, Splat!, Manic-Panic,) have always, ALWAYS washed out quickly and easily.

I layered nothing over my natural (DARK) brown. Honestly, if you're going for a dark red like your picture, I doubt you need to do anything to it.

When I was testing dye, I gathered up enough shed hairs to make 2 bundles. I secured each bundle with a twist tie and a bit of glue so it wouldn't fall apart. Then I prepared and dyed one of the bundles exactly how I planned to do it on my real hair. I even blowdried it and give it a spritz of shine spray. After it was dry, I was able to compare the two bundles to see the difference:

I was also able to hold the dyed bundle up to my actual hair for comparison:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff33/shoppingpiglet/strandvscurrent.jpg

To see how long it would last, I washed the dyed bundle repeatedly and counted the number of washes until it matched the other bundle again (^(oo)^)v

Manic Panic reds usually fade very quickly in virgin hair, especially if you use shampoo. It would probably completely fade out within a month. Kool aid also wouldn't last very long. Also, on some people's hair (such as my best friend's) this color turns out a bright cherry red --> http://www.clairol.com/cem/product_details.jsp?id=94&productId=305

I went and took a look. She has a lot paler hair than me, so I'm hoping it would be less...was she trying to keep her colour or was she trying to fade it?

Thanks for checking for me!! Do you know if it was just you that had that problem, or is that particular shade/ brand known for being impossible to wash out?

Haha, that's a much better idea than my little hairballs! I'll see what I can salvage from my hairbrush instead.

Ok..I was just worried because some people report kool aid as being super permanent and having to cut it out. I guess strand tests are pretty important, dye acts so differently on different heads of hair.

Wow, I've only heard of it being super temporary (a few friend's experiences), but I suppose it does react drastically differently with different hair. :/ I do know that they clairol, while not exactly healthy for the hair, always fades out it at most two months time (or at least it's supposed too, I also used a similar clairol dye that faded out completely in three weeks)

Can't post a pic of my friend, but this was her exact hair color from the clairol dye:

I used manic panic vampire red many times on dyed hair and it faded out very quickly, but last time I used it on virgin hair (siggy), I could not get it out for over six months, and even then I had to have a colour correction done. So be careful and do strand tests! I'm not trying to discourage you, I still think Manic Panic was the best thing since the invention of hair dye, just make sure you know how your hair reacts to it.

Yes, strand testing is the key! b(^(oo)^)d

Pssst.... I think "Beyond the Zone" is a brand of haircolor, which had reds that didn't fade for her.

That makes so much more sense now!! It was late last night I was reading all this. *feels silly*

I used the Raspberry Creme. It faded really well, and is completely gone now. I loved it so much, I really wish my hair would grow in that color. It is a cool red, not a warm red (it has purple/blue leaning, not orange/copper)

Here is a before...

Here is right after...

And here is recently (this is very recent... the color was pretty much gone after a month. This is just to show that it came out completely.)...

You can see a better "timeline" in my album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=6193), if you like.

Manic Panic came out of my hair completely with two washings. I left it in for one hour (if I remember correctly).

Punky by Jerome Russell stayed in my hair 3-4 months, but there was never a line because it gradually faded out a little more with each washing. I left that in for about an hour also.

PS: I've read that you can prolong the color by making the first rinse acid (add vinegar).

I have a dark blonde color naturally and I have gone red over top of it. It started fading within 3 days and was completely gone within a few months, granted I was left with some red tones when the light hit it but since you are reddish to start out I really don't think you would be stuck with very red hair for too long. Red fades soooo fast even with color enhancing shampoos, conditioners and leave ins.
