I have tried to find youtube videos on this, but I keep turning up with those decorative "hair wraps" done with embroidery thread. Any good links on this, or instructions here on LHC? I would like to give this a go.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but here is woman explaining how she wraps her hair. I think she uses this technique to keep her hair straight after a treatment but perhaps you could use the same technique to straighten?

I'm sorry if this isn't what you're looking for!

I think this way of setting hair is also known as a "doobie." It's supposed to be a relatively old way of setting hair. I had more luck using this as a search term along with "hair wrapping" when I looked this up a few weeks ago. It looks like a great way to set hair for straightness and bounce but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

There is a lot of videos out there, I like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp-0Ru_OD90&feature=related) for example. Just look in the right side bar and you will find plenty of other videos aswell!

I tried this a couple of times when I used to flatiron my hair, just to keep the frizz and curls away during night, and yeah it worked, supertricky for me though since I have layers (unfortunately). I'll try it some time on my curly hair.

Good luck!

Ah, that second video made it look so easy, but my slippy hair would be all over the place! I wonder if doing it damp is the only way I can do this? I am going to have to experiment, but I think without a sleep bonnet there's no point, looks like I have more shopping to do...

Anyway, yes ladies thank you this is what I was looking for! (Although I did get a trip down memory lane as I wore those hair wraps with embroidery floss when I was a teenager in the 80s and I thought I was sooooo cool LOL)

Funny I was thinking of posting a thread about how I straighten my hair. Where I come from, women don't have a lot of hair straighteners and the like, and this is how they get their hair straight, myself included.

This video is in Spanish, but who cares, you still can see how it is done

If you have trouble doing it, some people put a roller at the top of their head to help keep the shape while they wrap like so (you can keep the roller at the end and just wrap on top of the rest :)

I do the wrap before bed and put a scarf around it. I apply aloe Vera gel to keep the shape :)

If your hair is very thick and pretty wavy, you can wrap to one side for a and then unwrap it and wrap it to the other side and wait :)

Cheers! Its nice! I use it sometimes when cleaning to straighten and keep my hair out of the way at the same time :)

Your hair should not be wet If anything a bit damp, but not wet. Also, b e careful with the hair pins. If you press them to hard they can leave marks. Its best if you use long, straight ones :)

Here is the LHC link you asked for: How to relax curly hair – My Crown Wrap method (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=17291) :D

Wow, these are some great videos/pointers. I spent ages looking at hair wrap vids, but never spotted these before. Needless to say, I failed miserably at it (I'm lucky to manage a decent braid at this point), but some of these look pretty easy.

wow, my hair is wavy, around 2a I think, and I did a variation of this today and left it in from morning till now and I am amazed! It worked really well. There are a few kinks, but when it's all down and loose, It looks sooo nice. I think I like it more than a straightener because it looks natural! This is my hairs saving grace, this will keep me away from that straightener.

Detangle dry hair from the crown down. Rope crown braid the perimeter in big sections, 5-6 for the whole head, then continue the loose rope to the end to the tail; tuck it around and in. Put stretchy, silky scarf on quite tightly, then spin it around the head in the direction of the braid to really get the hair lying flat in one direction. Tie the scarf off securely.

I still can't find videos on how to use the ribbon binding technique.

I remember a member mentioning this "ribbon binding" technique. I forget her name, was she known as C&H or CH? My apology to her if I just butchered her username.

Yes, this will make wavy hair straight and curly hair wavy--if its not too curly. It won't work for a curly like me (3c, 4a range) but my 3a cousins used to do it routinely with good results. Another thing they used to do was to partly 'doobie' their hair. They would set the top using an orange juice can as if it were a really huge roller, or a couple of them and then wind the rest of the hair around their head for the night. It is key to tie the hair down tightly against the head with a scarf after using the pins--and yes, you want the pins to be straight and leave no marks.
I used to do it not to make my hair straight but to KEEP my hair straight. If I went to the hair dresser and got it pressed out (one would flat iron nowadays or blow dry) I used to be able to keep it straight by putting in the doobie every night, sometimes for as long as a week. Obviously, we are all trying not to use heat on our hair here (and I no longer like the straight look on me) but I think it was good for my hair in the sense that it minimized straightening--I wasn't putting heat in my hair every day because I didn't need to, it would stay straight until the next wash.
There are some products that help--I remember my cousin putting something on her hair when she put it up like this to straighten it further. She also used a boar bristle brush to brush the hair down flat around her head and it came out even straighter that way. I don't remember what she used, but maybe you can google and find out?

What was the title of this video? It's no longer on YT and I would love to see what the tutorial was, if anyone else has ever posted it in video or picture form
