View Full Version : How do you wear your hair up when doing an overnight treatment?

I know a lot of people on here leave treatments in their hair overnight, and I was just wondering: What do you use to wrap it up? I would like to try this, but i can't think of a way to wrap it that wouldnt be insanely uncomfortable and result in no sleep. I sleep with my hair down and am really not used to having things in my hair when I sleep. So what do you do? Is it uncomfortable?

When I oil my hair I put on a disposable shower cap I can get a few uses out of them before they are shot. I thought it would bother me but ittends to conform quite nicely to my head so I have nevr woken up feeling like my hair was being strangled-sometimes I wake up if my hair is braided and it gets caught around me or under the DH!

I regularly sleep with Flexis in my hair, either one small bun on each side or each braid starting on one side and clipped to the other. When I henna, I put my beardlocks up and wrap my head in plastic.

When I deep oil overnight, I braid my hair. I donīt condition overnight, because my scalp would be irritated next morning. But I do deep treatments for an hour or two once a week.

I'm not willing to sleep with plastic on my head, but it's possible to put quite a decent amount of oil on the ends/length, then bun on top of the head for the night, without needing to cover at all. Castor oil scalp treatments work fine this way, too, in moderate quantities.

Like you, I normally leave my hair loose when I sleep. When I dye my hair, I just coil the length around my crown and wrap the whole thing in plastic cling wrap. Then I secure a length of silk fabric on the outside and hop in bed (^(oo)^)

I have coco nut oil as often as I can-like just now!I put as much as I want on my scalp and hair.My hair and scalp sing of joy.It doesn´t stain the pillow case because the hair absorbs it so well.Right now I have my hair in a cinnamon bun on top of my hair (hair is so long I don´t need a hair pin).To sleep I put my hair in a shape of an L on top of my pillow and I can toss and turn without it moving down.Hope this helped!

Wrapped in a bun at the top of my head. I have tried to do braids, but they bug me, always seem to be in the way.

I always sleep in a "satin" sleep cap, so i just use those for the overnight treatments, too. Helps the oils to soak in and after I wash my hair I wear the same cap again to get a light coating of oil on my clean hair.

I usually braid to one side.. if its a particularly gooey treatment I will sometimes follow up with wrapping a silk scarf around it but for most of what I do, I just braid as usual.
I used to use a silk sleeping cap at night but found that it caused breakage and thinning along the crown of my head so I had to stop :( but I'd suggest that if you do not have these issues :)

When I do my monthly EVOO overnight treatment I use 3 large sheets of cling wrap (i.e. Saran wrap). Covers the entire head.
I also put a towel over my pillow to protect it.

When I oil it I only oil from the nape down, so I bun it and then cover the bun with a piece of soft, silky fabric and secure that around the bun with a scrunchie. Looks silly, but just as comfortable as my normal sleep bun and protects the sheets from the oil. I've never tried leaving an SMT or anything overnight.

When I oil it, I can comb it, so I generally have a single English braid in the middle. When I don't oil it, I don't comb it, so I either put it in a low ponytail and leave it loose, or put it in a bun and secure with a small claw clip.

When I oil my hair I just put it in a plait and sleep on my normal silk pillowcase. I figure that any oil that gets on the pillowcase will just give my face a nice treatment as well. So far it hasn't stained the silk pillowcase at all and it's cream.
As for some kind of conditioner, I would probably just plait it and then put a towel over my pillow to soak up any of the drips.

When I oil my hair I usually just braid it and let it do it's thing. It doesn't seem to get on the pillowcase or anything :)

I oiled it last night and it worked fine just braided :D I would love to try an SMT overnight, but am a little worried that even with a towel down I will get it everywhere (knowing me!)

I put my hair in a tight french braid for sleeping in a heavy castor oiling. My hair sucks enough of it up that I don't need to cover it and I braid it tight enough that it's usually still up in the morning, unless I pulled out the band in my sleep (not so much of a problem when I'm knocked out by the ambien walrus!)

Cherry_sprinkle, I was totally worried that a sleeping cap would cause breakage for me! My hair breaks if you just think about breakage :-/

I make a braid beginning where my bangs are.
Then I can lay it over my head and put a cap (no idea if that is the right word for kapje) on.

I have been wanting to try a sleeping cap, but my hair is exactly the same as yours. All I have to do is hear a mention of breakage and I notice bits of hair everywhere.

I braid mine, and sometimes cover with a shower cap.

I only do deep oilings overnight and in that case I braid it early enough that some of the oil can soak in then sleep on a towel. The last time I did this, though, I put a braid at the top of my head and created a braided bun on the top of my head and slept on a towel.
During the day when i do treatments I put a shower cap over it then a toque to hold the shower cap in place.

I wear an old tshirt, put my hair into a regular English braid and put a towel over my pillow. I cant say the towel makes for a super comfy sleep but I don't do it often enough to really bother me. Its always worth it.

Cling wrap with a beanie on top. If you wrap the hair flat against the head you can't really feel it.

My overnight treatments usually consist of generous oilings, and since that doesn't cause dripping I don't need to use a sleep cap, all I to do is braid it and put a towel around my pillow.
ETA: these days I put an old cotton t-shirt on my pillow instead of a towel, it's more comfortable that way

What's "SMT treatment"?
Also, is there a page with a list of acronyms and their meanings? For use newbies. (:
