View Full Version : Wedding hair trial - WDYT? (pic heavy)

I origianlly wanted some sort of a braided style. So I went to a stylist recommended by my makeup artist. I had sent her a pic of my hair and told her how long it was beforehand and she said no problem. I get there and she can't braid, but I said lets try it anyway. Well she tried for over two hours and no go.

I went to a second stylist who I was told does braid. Well I get there and she doesn't. The girl I spoke with was new and misinformed. Since I already drove over an hour to get there I figured what the heck. This was the result.

I have a third trial set up on Saturday that I was going to cancel, but my sister says this one doesn't frame my face well. I like it, but think she might be right. My future m-i-l & friend both like it, but I think they may just like the curls and aren't looking at how it complements me.

So what do you guys think?

Not wanting to be mean but it pulls your face down. I would suggest depending on the dress going for an updo - say a high plated bun with the tiara around it.

Quick question - are you having a veil? and what sort of dress - slim or fluffy?

Magdalene

You have a long, narrow face like I do! I think it is very pretty, and I like that it isn't too severe but frames your face.

What would you change that you feel would flatter you more?

August 24th, 2011, 10:18 PM
Elph, that kinda is an up do, lol. I wanted to do a half up, but once I got my dress I didn't want to cover it. This was one solution. I want something soft around the face because my profile is way too severe without my glasses and I won't be wearing them on my wedding day. I am wearing a veil, but only for the ceremony. My dress is slim, it's a fit and flare a-line. http://www.casablancabridal.com/collections/view/26/307#

Magdalene thank you. I honestly don't know what I'd change. Day to day I wear my hair up to protect it. On special occasions I usually wear it down or in a half up. I didn't want to cover the beautiful back of my dress and I thought this was a good solution. Now I'm not sure. I'm usually not wishy washy, but I wasn't completely sure on this and when my sister said she doesn't like it it pushed my unsure. If you get what I mean.

I took a look in your albums and you really have gorgeous hair! But this style looks a little.. tortured. It doesn't show off the natural beauty of your hair.

Wavelength
August 24th, 2011, 10:22 PM
I have to agree with Cassie 123. It looks too overdone, and your hair's natural beauty isn't being complimented.

I think I see what the stylist was trying to do, but it's not really working. ;)

August 24th, 2011, 10:23 PM
Hm.

It's a nice style, but I don't think it suits your face. It's a little...frou frou? Not polished?

It's also the 'default formal' hairstyle that so many hairstylists seem to fall back on. Curl, pin, done. And a wedding should be special, not default!

You're looking for someone to braid your hair...you know who the best are, right? Hairstylists for African American hair. Many can also do great jobs on Caucasian hair, why not give them a go?

Quixii
August 24th, 2011, 10:23 PM
Honestly, I think there could be something a little more flattering done in front, and in the back, the curls seem a little messy. But perhaps for the actual day, they would be made to be more neat? I don't mean any insults, and I strongly believe you should go with whatever makes you feel the most beautiful.

xoerincolleen
August 24th, 2011, 10:32 PM
It's pretty, but it doesn't say "Wow!" to me. It looks more like a prom style, imo. You said you're unsure of it, and on your wedding day especially, you deserve to have a style that is exactly what you want and makes you feel like a princess!
If braiding is what you want, you should look into it...I think a braided style would look really nice with that BEAUTIFUL dress!

GourmetChica
August 24th, 2011, 10:54 PM
I like it but I don't love it! I think if you really want a braid you should get one! Also, I think a style with more volume in the back of your head would look great.

AnqeIicDemise
August 24th, 2011, 11:01 PM
Its pretty, I'll give you that, but I don't like it very much. The curls are nicely done in some parts, in others too messy. Its as if she a) either tried to do the purposefully messy 'do and it didn't come out very natural or b) struggled with pieces, pulled out the curl too much and left it at that. (Purposefully messy 'dos are HARD to do. Believe me. I try. I lack the talent and way to much ocd for it.)

Now, you have ONE amazing head of hair, and very, very pretty upper body. You have a very graceful curve to your neck and shoulders -- which if I am looking at the right dress, will definitely accentuate it. (we are talking about the linked one with the sweetheart front and v-dipped back, yes?) The current hair trial would hide it.. ALL. What's the point of having found THE dress that'll flatter your every curve and alluring body parts if it's going to be hidden by a mass of curls? (even the tiara gets a little lost in it. :( )

I would say something between an updo and asymmetrical would be quite flattering, especially if it could be put over one shoulder.

Exhibit a:
http://meghibberd.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/emmy-rossum-braided-side-swept-hairstyle1.jpg

You can use your natural curl to provide volume in the back, have an accent braid and have a gorgeous spill of wave/curl over one shoulder.

Exhibit b:

http://www.bethanykayhair.com/images/hair/prom-hair.jpg

The volume of hair along your shoulder and with the hair swept up and out of the way from your face would give you the framing layers without it being 'visually dragging' like another poster has said.

http://x21.xanga.com/82cc713162432183440737/z140499664.jpg

Even something like this gives you a nice side split without too much volume in the front as to not hide your tiara.

ETA: I personally think you have the features and dress to pull this one off, but it'd swallow up the tiara. Maybe a little manipulation would do?

I'm afraid I agree with most other posters.
It's okay, however I think there is a style out there that will rock your world.
Now you just have to find it

I agree with angelicdemise.

Her suggestions reminded me of these videos, which might help:

The first one is a braid, half up, and asymmetrical, but it may not be your style at all.

You are cute and I like the curls on you. If you love the 'do I think you should wear it. But if you only like it so, so, then no. Don't settle for less than feeling as the hottest bride in the world! There has to be a stylist out there that can do awesome braids, if braids are your dreamstyle.

MissAlida
August 25th, 2011, 12:24 AM
Let me start by saying that your dress is AMAZING:DI love it...now about the hair...To be honest, I don't think it's good enough. The twists on top look a bit messy, and the curls are not equally tight.I think you deserve something more elaborate, even if it will be a half updo. Something that will look more special. You could keep the curls, but you could also try to bring the top part of your hair back , and do some kind of braided "flower", twist or bun in the back. Then leave the curls hanging down. I also think, that if you are unsure about this style, that means it's not the one for you. If it's not love at first, than it has to go. Good luck in finding a good hairstyle, and congratulations on your wedding.:flower:

You and your hair are gorgeous, this hairdo is not good enough !

Your dress is stunning and I'm afraid I agree with the other posters, the hair doesn't match it!
I had the exact same hairstyle as a bridesmaid in my brothers wedding, some stylists see super long and instantly go for "make it curly, twist and pin" :o

I love AngelicDemise's links. My first thought when I saw the back of your dress was, over one shoulder. Leaning towards exhibit a! You could have a small soft multistrand braided headband to tuck your tiara into with abit of volume and twisting at the crown then curls all gathered together with tiny accent braids on one side? It would soften your profile too.

Good luck finding your style :)

August 25th, 2011, 02:51 AM
I actually like your natural, unstyled hair better than this 'do. Even just pulling the canopy back into a simple English braid and letting the rest flow free would go better with the elegant simplicity of the gown, I think. (Just my $0.02.)

Alaia
August 25th, 2011, 03:16 AM
I also have to agree with the majority.

It's a lovely style, and you and your hair look beautiful, but to match that FABULOUS dress you need to go for a fabulous style, not just a lovely one :)

It flummoxes me that hairstylists do not know how to braid. I mean, really.

Elph
August 25th, 2011, 03:45 AM
Not a prob. But with the dress you have sleak is required, the dress is fluffy so your hair should not be - this is my thought though.

That said the links that have been given which resemble the style you had but were way more polished would look fantastic.

Go with your heart if it doesn't grab you then it is not right. The dress is AMAZing

Wow .. gorgeous dress ... and you have gorgeous hair!

I do love angelicdemise's suggestions and links.

Before my wedding as I debated how to wear my hair, a friend gave me a piece of advice. She said to wear my hair in a way that was comfortable and familiar to me - special, but not a severe departure from who I am. I wore my hair in a way that was special and pretty and not something I could do myself easily. I wore my hair down a lot at that time and ended up with a jeweled headband with a small pouf in the front and curls down my back. When I look at my wedding pictures I smile because it is "me" and not something vastly foreign. Take that suggestion for what it's worth, but it very much worked for me.

Mesmerise
August 25th, 2011, 05:06 AM
Hmm well I think the style has potential, but I really don't think the stylist did it very well! I think the curls look far too random and uneven, some are more curled than others... and it looks a bit too messy... Or am I being too fussy here? But if someone did my hair like that I would be disappointed by how the curls turned out! If they were done well...then yeah, it would be a nice enough style. Personally, I like half up styles for weddings with long curls down the back... but I don't feel this stylist really pulled it off well!

Gutterfayrie
August 25th, 2011, 05:22 AM
To be honest, I really don't think that style goes with the dress. I think your dress needs a hair style that is a bit more polished and together looking.

Raqdoll
August 25th, 2011, 05:43 AM
I would go with a bun, with some draped braids in the back with a few loose curls down the back to draw the eye to your shoulders and dress.

I hope you find the right stylist!

Well, I'm relieved I'm not the only one with this opinion :o

Your hair: gorgeous. The dress: gorgeous. The hairdo: ehhh. I don't like it.

You can get something that's much more sophisticated, modern and that would suit the elegance of your dress AND show off the beauty of your hair.

Personally, I should add I don't like the idea of the tiara that much...

Peggy E.
August 25th, 2011, 07:47 AM
The dress is sophisticated, gorgeous and sensual - you don't want a fluffy hair style to go with it.

The most stunning style I can recall seeing was in that nutso movie, "Hangover." That bride, with the simple dress and hair, was amazing.

Your dress is an expression of your style and would indicate you appreciate the beauty that flows from simplicity, which would best flatter this dress - don't you think?

Odd, too, that everyone is saying they "do braids" and then, after you've driven hours to get there, "oops, we forgot - we don't after all!" Then they turn around and ignore your request, doing the style they know how to do - not that you were seeking.

Maybe you should braid your own hair? Gee, I'm a big help, aren't I?!

You're going to look amazing no matter what is done with your hair!

This is just what I was going to point out! I would not go with this stylist even if I liked the result simply because they promised something they could not possibly deliver. That is not acceptable.

I think the curls themselves are pretty, and they don't look bad on you.. but it just doesn't seem.. wedding-like. More.. Disney princess-like. It's a pretty style (although the curls are a bit flat but maybe your hair is just nuts like mine XD), just doesn't strike me as a wedding 'do.

maria_asa
August 25th, 2011, 09:57 AM
I also think that the hair do isn't that great. To be honest, to me it doesn't look quite finished and rather messy and if you want braids I say go for braids (or at least try it and see how it feels).
I also agree about the dress, absolutely gorgeous.

Magdalene
August 25th, 2011, 10:22 AM
Ok, now that I've seen the dress, I'd love to see a deep side part with a low side bun on the opposite shoulder, maybe fingerwaves to frame the face. You could easily incorporate some accent braids in there, too.

This (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=72&pictureid=50306) is one I did on my own hair- it looks complicated but is really just a sock bun with the ends pinned strategically (I did leave the front sweep out of the bun to pin more loosely)
You could also leave a few curls to come down over one shoulder, that would be lovely

Calaelen
August 25th, 2011, 10:25 AM
First of all, you, your dress, and your hair are beautiful :) You'll be stunning no matter what, but honestly, this style looks out-dated, and it doesn't suit the dress at all, you need something sleek, and very sophisticated to pull of the look the dress is trying to give.

Are you any good at styling your own hair? Do you have a friend or someone who does know how to braid that can play around with ideas? I think your instincts are spot on, and you shouldn't settle.

embee
August 25th, 2011, 10:54 AM
I find the "do" looks straggly. Not polished, not soft, not something that is hugable at all, and there'll be heaps of hugs going on.

You maybe need to advertise for a Ren-faire braider! They can do such fantastic work. And they're used to working "with the costume". I'm sure they'd have wonderful ideas if they saw that gorgeous dress!

In my opinion, you want your "do" to stay rock solid and lovely for at least the entire day and evening. And you really don't want a whole can of hairspray to hold it together... after all, when the day is done, you'll want to take your hair down and it be soft and nice, not icky and needing major washing and deep conditioning, etc! :D

Just my 2 cents.

I know you said you wanted braids. This last style has simple English braids incorporated within the hair-do. Any stylist should be able to do simple English braids.

I have to completely agree with what everyone else is saying- a loose, romantic updo with some braid action going would look absolutely BEAUTIFUL with that dress, especially because it's a sweetheart cut. Also some face-framing tendrils that are gently curled would look so lovely as well. That dress is all about showing the back, neck, and shoulders, and with a pretty updo, it would compliment it wonderfully, and frame your pretty face! :)

I like it but I did wear something similar to prom over a decade ago, so grain of salt and all.

I prefer the style MissAlida posted to the ones AngelicDemise posted. I did also like the braided styles Arya showed, though I think it would be a shame not to have your lovely curls showing more than those styles would.

I think the curls are absolutely beautiful & I do like the one tendril coming down the side BUT I have to ask where the heck did you find not just one but TWO stylists who cannot braid???

Here where I live that's basically one of the beginning things they learn. Many salons even have pricing for French braids & other braids right up on the wall along with cuts & colors. I'm shocked to hear that not all stylists know how to braid.

And congrats with the impending wedding!

I think that Jessica Alba style that Arya posted is stunning, but the first Anne Hathaway style (in that same post) would work well with the tiara you already have.

Although in my opinion you could do just about anything with your pretty hair and that gorgeous dress and it will look good. Good luck!

Girl, go to an African American salon and let them braid your hair - they will do something spectacular because they KNOW their STUFF. :)

I love the idea of romantic braidy fancy hairstyles...one day when I get married again I would love to do a crown braid with little flowers in it or something :)

Wow! There are so many responses here I don't even know how to respond so I'll do it properly tomorrow. First off, thank you all so much. I thought it looked kinda childish when she was doing it, but she didn't show me the back until the end.

I asked for something that was soft around the face and I wanted some of my length out, just not longer than bsl. My initial idea was to take Arc691 's style here http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=70692 and maybe have some long curls coming out of the bun. I would also put a pouf of some sort in the front to soften it a bit since I don't have bangs. Since neither of the stylists knew how to french braid that was out.

I wasn't sure on the curly style and I knew I could rely on all of you to help. :) I'm going to keep my appt on Saturday (despite the hurricane they think is going to hit). I confirmed today that she definitely can french braid. She can't lace braid, but I'm not sure they knew what that was 'cause how can you french braid but not lace braid?

I would do my hair myself, but I want something kinda elaborate and don't want that stress on myself that morning. My neighbor does amazing braids on her daughter, but she can't french braid either. I showed her the style and she's tried, but no go. I love so many of the styles that you all have posted. I'm going to look over them again and print some out to bring with me.

Did I mention that my wedding is 2 weeks from today! I don't have much time to play so I'm hoping this girl Saturday came come up with something. They only have 1.5 hrs set for the appt so we don't have a ton of time to play.

Thank you all so much for all the compliments on my dress and hair. I love them both. I keep saying I don't want a regular bridal style because I can do more with my hair, I just don't think they get it.

Sorry for all the rambling. I need to get some sleep. I will try to properly respond tomorrow and I'll def. post pics of the new style on Saturday. I didn't expect this many responses, especially so quick. :) With the major majority of you saying it doesn't work I'm glad I asked. :) Keep the style ideas coming if you have them. I love having options and for some reason when I googled for them I wasn't finding anything. Go figure. :)

I think there's a much more graceful hairstyle out there for you, your hair is beautiful, and the style doesn't do it justice.

I will be honest, I don't love it, in fact I hate it: it doesn't suit your face, it's boring, it's stiff and, most importantly, it does not seem to be what you want. If no stylist there knows how to do a braid (.....which is odd....) consider practicing with a friend and she could do it for you :flower:

There are some lovely pictures to choose from and info on the forum. If you see a style you like and don't know how to make it, make a post about it for info or a challenge for someone to recreate it.....and there is also youtube

Congrats on the wedding!

:):):):) I hope it goes splendid! :):):):)

Hmmmmmm....sounds like a warning sign to me....
I would really really really encourage you to go to a local black salon. Good ones can definitely give you the braided style of your dreams, and most of them know every braid under the sun!!

Hey! I was wondering how it's been going and saw your post~ I agree with the majority - this particular style just doesn't seem to be working for your occasion. Your hair is so pretty, long, and thick~ a braided up-do would be beautiful, but so would just wearing it down :)

The African-American or Latino hairstylist idea sounds good~ I've been watching YouTube videos of Latino guys braiding hair, and they are amazing!!

I hope something works out, and that you get a look that does you and your gorgeous hair justice! Like I said, you can't go wrong letting your hair speak for itself by just wearing it down. For us long-hair girls, that in itself marks an occasion as special! A friend of mine with waist-length black hair wore her hair down for her wedding, and it really looked beautiful that way!

You have a longish narrow face you need a little height at the top and temple to balance your head out. Front similar to this http://www.getbeautytips.com/Articles/images/Part-Up-Prom-Hairstyles-06.jpg but if you also want to braid you could see if someone can do a braid with your crown hair and use that braid to anchor and cover the pins from the front pouf( what you do is seperate the crown hair an d;eave about 2 inche strip of hair all the way around your haed-more or less depedning on volume braid the crown into braid let hang) creat the height at the front by pinning it with support if neccesary(cotton , your ahir rats) pin it at the base of the crown braidbut leave the excess lenght loose. Use the crwon braid to cricle around the part and inwards as necc elaving the remaining hair from the front pouf in the middle. Then once the braid is anchored you can curl the loose hair in the center and the remaining 2 inch strip at your neck so it can cascade pinning th eupper cascade as necc. You can then pin your tiara to the braid firmly so it does not affect the front pouf but is still visible.

I like the pic Celtic Madora has posted it looks more natural.

Honestly you have such naturally beautiful hair is seems a shame that it looks so "curling ironed". Im just not feeling it. Not when you have such good hair. I also think the stylist did not pay enough attention to the front of you hair. It looks really styled at the back and really undone in other areas. Im also considering it criminal that she had left the comb of the tiara showing and areas of your scalp. She should have flattened it and manipulated the hair so that it wasnt showing. Its wedding hair afterall.

I feel terrible being so negative but honestly your hair deserves a better style, this dosent do it justice.

So I went to the hair trial last weekend and showed her the picture that faithsdaisy posted. This is what she did.

Well that doesn't look anything like it. That was my third trial and I decided to give up and try to do it myself. I was trying to do LilithMoon's rope crown braid and it just doesn't work for my length/thickness. I decided to try to just leave the side down and that didn't work either. I tried a rose bun in the center and no go. Well today I decided to try it one more time and put the rose bun to one side. This is rough because I just did it, but what do you guys think? I'd put crystal pins in every 4th rope or so just to spice it up. I'd also use a clear hair tie on the end.

OMG that looks perfect. I would suggest you make sure you have everyone around you to sort the rest of the stuff out and you just focus on you and do your hair.

The one thing I hated about my wedding was that I didn't spend any time on myself - it is your day everyone else can sort the rest out.

Good luck

what a funky salon hairdo. It really left me confused.
that being said, I'm immediately drawn to the rose bun that you are working on. the front looks so much better than the salon pics!!! I would love to see some softness (tendrils?) around your face and crown, but you are definitely on the right track!!!
hey... what are BFF's for??? to braid your hair!!!!

September 7th, 2011, 03:59 AM
So I went to the hair trial last weekend and showed her the picture that faithsdaisy posted.

Erm... to me it just looks the same as the first one. She's ignored everything you said and has just done a "generic" bridal hairstyle: whack in some curls, put it mostly up and oh! she said something about plaits! let's just not curl this one little bit, let's plait it so she can't say we were ignoring her!

That was my third trial and I decided to give up and try to do it myself. I was trying to do LilithMoon's rope crown braid and it just doesn't work for my length/thickness. I know this one isn't as fancy looking, but I like it far, far better. With a couple of little pins or some tiny flowers or something sprinkled along the plait and in the bun it'd look gorgeous. I like it far better than the others - it looks more "you" and less "generic bride". Also, you won't have to pay some stupid hairdresser to just ignore your requests and do what they think is best!

I'm going to chip in here and say that this is going to be important to you in the future. My wedding was a little rushed and I didn't have time to organise my hair but I had something in mind and the girl we got (recommended by my cousins who have totally different taste in everything to me) just couldn't get it right. In the end I got there on the morning of my wedding and told her to do the updo that she does best and whilst it did look nice, it really wasn't me and didn't reflect who I am. I look back on those photos and I still feel that way.

Find another stylist. Go for another trial. Perhaps ring bridal shops and ask who they recommend. Sometimes my hair works for me and other days it just doesn't. I'd be afraid that it wouldn't work out if I did it myself - but that's just me...

I also wanted to add that I think you should put some height in your hair at the front. It will give a softer look and balance out the whole style. You have amazing hair.

headtrip_honey
September 7th, 2011, 06:34 AM
I honestly like what you did better! It's softer, more natural, and I think compliments your face a whole lot better.

Dressed up with flowers, or decorative pins, and you'll have an amazing hairstyle.

I like yours better. Just my unasked for 2 cents here, but have you considered a crown braid? I totally see you with crown braid taking only the canopy and leaving the rest flowing free, I'd also sew a ribbon through your braid , I think.

YES! The style you did yourself is much more unique and much more YOU. You will want to look back at your photos one day and see yourself reflected in them, not someone in a costume, know what I mean? I bet if you got some of those spin crystals to attach to the bun it would look beautiful, perhaps some little tiny fabric flower bobby pins or something.

One tiny thing some don't think of - I had a finish of shine spray on my hair for my wedding and it looked AMAZING in photos, especially flash photos! If you're doing your own makeup, keep it matte matte matte (and nothing with titanium dioxide which will reflect white, PM me if you want to know more), but shine spray on the hair can look brilliant.

I got hair pins with crystals on them that I figured I'd put in every 3rd or 4th place. I'm just hoping I can do it ok tomorrow. I did like it better than what everyone else was doing and I won't have to worry about making some appt. :) Thank you all for your comments! I should've just tried to do it myself from the getgo. I just figured a hair dresser could do something better than I could. Go figure.

Another vote for your own work! It looks so much more refined and elegant. :) Even if it's not "perfect" on The Day it will be very nice and comfy and you'll not be full of hairspray and gunk. You will be gorgeous!

... and you sure gave the professionals every chance to do something lovely. They just *failed*.

I'd like to echo what most of the other posters have said. I really like the bun you did yourself, except maybe play around with it more to make it more romantic. Add a tiny braid from the side or make it a little messy or something. I hope you'll reconsider the tiara - I think it detracts from your lovely hair and almost cheapens the look. Congrats on getting married!

I like what you did much better ! Softer, more romantic and way less fake !

I think you should work a little more on the front view though, to make it somewhat softer and around your face... I'm no stylist as to how to acheive this though ! I do love the back view of your bun (:

Best of luck and congratulations !!!

i love what you did with your hair instead of the generic one from the hairdressers. I think even the "its not perfect" look is really good on you. Have you thought about doing the same one you did in your hair but instead of the rose bun try lilithmoon's bun instead, you know the one where she gets two strands together, twists them then drags one back to create the curls. Of course though, i really do love what you did, i'm just suggesting options so on the day you know your confident in your choice. :)

Something softening around your face could also be earrings. Just in case you have trouble making poofyness and softness there, as I would. Also, frizz can be softening.... in the light, like cat fur, a nimbus. :)

September 7th, 2011, 11:58 AM
Yes, you look lovely with your own hair handiwork. Another vote here for skipping the tiara, if you don't have your heart set on wearing it. (And if you do, of course you should wear it!) If you're trying to add a little fullness to the front of your hair forward of where the bun sits, you may be able to get some type of soft "form" or clip-in hairpiece that you can put under the front of your hair as you pull it back to form the bun.

You have lovely hair, and I don't think these hairdressers are treating its natural beauty with the respect it deserves. ;-)

Thank you all again. I'm gonna go with this style w/out the tiara. I would try to make it a bit higher in the front. Those pictures are just me messing around desperately trying to find something. It was 1am when I did it too. I got a crystal flower pin that kinda looks like an orchid for the center of the bun. :) I'm gonna try a local Dominican salon tomorrow a.m. and redo it myself if for some reason they can't do it. I'll post pics of the finished style either way.

I'm off to bed, I need some sleep since my wedding day is tomorrow. :) Wish me luck!
